Graphic Art Film Effect Help
I got pretty close with Vegas effects operating on the image in your original post. >So for all the advanced geriatrics in this forum (:O), it seems clear that nobody had the first personal computer. I had an Altair 8800, serial number 400-something, and even did computer animation on it (pre-vis for a film-based system) back in the '70s. I had to build my own display out of a junk airline reservation terminal and a bunch of 2102 RAM chips. 256x256 resolution!

Can I Remove V7 After Upgrade???
I removed V5 and V6 out from under V7 once. What happened is that all my plug-ins disappeared. I suppose I could have re-installed V7 but I took it as an excuse to upgrade to V8.

SImple two-column credits in ProType
Yes, I get it. The suggestion to duplicate through a preset is a good one. Thanks! It's a bit of a hassle to make changes later, and clients *always* have changes to the credits, but duplicating should work every time. Actually, my cursor does not snap to frames, even if "Quantize to Frames" is selected in the main project timeline. It doesn't snap to keyframes, even if "Snapping" is enabled in the main timeline. What would be cool would be a "group" entity with it's own keyframable transform properties. Any number of text boxes could have common motion. Like parent/child video tracks in the main timeline.

Scene Detection issue in Version 8
I've noticed that capture will also sometimes split a clip if there are dropped frames. Are you showing any dropped frames? Maybe it is a performance problem. Is your camera connection USB or FireWire? Is there other system or bus activity contending for bandwidth?

SImple two-column credits in ProType
You're not missing anything and I even mentioned this approach in my first post. It's my own bias, I guess. My fear is that since editing keyframes is not an exact science, (especially since ProType doesn't seem to have a way to place the timeline cursor right on a keyframe) these two textboxes will drift out of sync. So you're exactly right, but what scares me is making sure the splined interpolation stays "identical" through the editing process. I have done this same thing - two text boxes - quite a bit in Corel Draw and it always adds up to a hassle to keep them in sync as changes are made. Likewise, I've composited multiple elements in Vegas and tried to move them in sync with keyframe interpolation and had trouble with them drifting out of sync.

Actually, that won't work because the center of the space-band thus created is not centered in the text block unless the two columns are the same width. That is, if the "role" and the "name" aren't the same width, the space between them won't be centered. And, even if it did, what if you wanted the left column flush-left and the right column flush-right?

Vegas-cut movie wins award
Here is an excerpt that includes the process shot. It's 1Mb/s so you might have to download it and play it offline. http://trailers.sparkdigitalmedia.com/CIMD/Excerpt.wmv The idea of the shot is that Feverell (orange shirt) is talking about his dream and we are cutting back and forth between the dream and him sitting in the restaurant describing it. The process shot portrays the camera travelling from the dream to "reality" in a single shot to underscore the entanglement of dream and reality that is at the core of the story. The "real" building this was made from has only 2 stories so the third floor was added in PhotoShop. Also, the restaurant interior is really clear across town from the exterior. To make the glass doors swing open, I let them swing closed and reversed the shot in Vegas. So the dolly ran backwards, the bartender walked backwards, etc. I wanted to use an acceleration curve on the camera motion, but I couldn't make the motion of all the pieces match up when I turned on smoothing. I also had to roto a monitor out of 160 frames of this shot. I did this by exporting the frames to Photoshop, modifying them, and re-importing them. This excerpt is going to give you the wrong idea about the movie. It's strictly PG.

Single Frame Credit
Yeah, I briefly wondered if he would ever see this. Too late! I agreed to it before I understood that I didn't understand it. When we signed the original contract, I told him he could specify how he would be credited. After reviewing an approval cut, he said he wanted the "single frame credit'.

Boris FX "Professional-Grade" Chroma-Keyer?
I don't know about Boris, but I bought a copy of Ultra trying to get out of a sticky situation. In the end, I found Vegas to be just as good and a lot more flexible. With Ultra, I can paint a garbage matte to force certain regions to be "transparent". With Vegas, I can do that but I can also create a second matte to force other regions to be opaque. Vega's plug-in chains and layered tracks basically let me design my own keyer. For example, I can chroma-blur and up-saturate the image that generates the mask without affecting the source image to be keyed.

Single Frame Credit
Grazie is right. I should have simply asked him. But I was afraid to appear non-professional. (So why am I not afraid to look silly to you guys?) And I did have the "from a story by.." part very specific. With fwtep's input, I'll render something and email it to him for approval. "Single Card" makes a lot more sense. Thanks! "Not Unlike A Story I Once Read By" - Surely that was from "War of the Worlds" I must have missed it ;-)

What? Huh? Vegas saves all the effects settings in the .VEG file. Even if you use keyframe automation. I do this all the time. There must be something special about your workflow that I don't understand.

Two things
It is easy to extract a single frame as a still image. Make sure the timeline cursor is sitting on the frame you want. Make sure the video preview quality is set to "Best (Full)". Click on the little floppy disk icon at the top of the preview monitor... Vegas doesn't seem to have a good way to render your entire clip as a sequence of still frames. It can import such a sequence, though. To turn a whole clip into a sequence of stills, I use Virtual Dub http://www.virtualdub.org/ Your question about slowing down a clip is more complicated. How much are you slowing it down? What is it (music, voice, etc)? As you can see, I have more questions but no answers. Maybe someone else can jump in here. Be aware that it may just not be possible to get good results with your particular track.

Is there a way to copy paste a set of Key Frames to multiple tracks / events w/o copying the clip it's set to?
Duplicate the track. Then change the media. This should keep keyframes for track-related effects but if you want to keep the keyframes for events, you'll have to use a trick as suggested above. Close the project, rename the media, open the project again, specify new media when prompted because of the missing file. I've done the "duplicate track" part but haven't tried the close project, rename media, etc part although I use that trick quite a bit in other contexts.

how would you rate keying in Vegas?
You can do spill suppression two ways. You can use the Color Corrector filter to add a little magenta. You can use the complement eyedropper to sample the green screen to get the exact chroma angle you need and then you can set the amount by eye. I also use the secondary color corrector on spill, especially on the rim of light around the subject. Set the affected color to the green screen. Set the correction as above. I usually use both of these in combination. I use the color corrector to clean up the extra green radiosity that's all over the scene and the secondary color corrector just for the spill around the subject.

OT: Stock Footage Coop
Actually, I might be able to help with this. I have a 6 Mb/s connection - small by typical file-distribution standards, but we're a small community. I am stuck in a term contract and not using the bandwidth so it's a sunk cost for me. And I have over a terabyte of free disk space, too. I would be willing to host this, if you want to do the rest of the work.

Mask Generator Effect Question
I am actually working on something similar. I am trying to make an aerobics video in which I play the instructor and two students. You need a green screen. Referring to the tracks as you have described them, track one and two need to be captured against the green screen. Then composite them all together with track three at the "bottom" and the Chroma Key plugin on both tracks 1 and 2. If Track 1 wants to walk in front of Track 2, then Track 1 needs to be on top. If Track 2 wants to walk in front of Track 1, then Track 2 needs to be on top. If both need to be in front at different times, then you split your video and in some places put Track 1 on top and in other places Track 2 on top. You don't need a parent/child relationship between the tracks. Normal 2D compositing will work.

2 questions
I think you want to render the video in sections, right? Maybe because you want to put different sections in indivudual tapes or discs or something. You have to do a render pass for each section. And the way you render just part of the timeline is to select that portion and set the "Render Loop Region Only" checkbox in the render dialog. Something you can do to make it easier to select the desired section each time is to define "Regions". Select the first section of the timeline and hit "R" on the keyboard. This inserts a pair of Region markers, one at each end of the selection. When you're ready to render, select a region by double-clicking one of the Region Markers.
