OT:Anyone record video through the windshield?
Any thought to recording in front of the windshield instead of through it? A product like Digital Juice's Low Rider will strap to your car & your camera and provide a cushion to help even out the small bumps. Obviously you'd absolutely want one or more filters on the front to protect your lens from bug or rock smacks. Advantages: crystal clear video, no reflections, possibly less road jitter in video due to cushion Disadvantages: no rain protection, no passenger audio (if that's what you want), no way to pan the camera, slight potential for camera damage Brian

Sandy Bridge .... anyone yet?
Haven't built yet, but it sounds like a major step up in performance and the 2500K/2600K aren't very expensive at all (for the performance gain). Sandy Bridge will initially release with two chipsets, one that enables the embedded graphics (G67) and one that allows for over-clocking (P67). If you're buying a discrete graphics card anyway, then you'll want the latter. I don't need awesome graphics or CUDA, so I'll wait a couple months for the third chipset that enables the embedded graphics & allows for over-clocking.

SDD (Solid State Drives) Performance Pros & Cons?
Before you spend money on memory, make sure your motherboard will support the extra RAM. I think my Core 2 3.0Ghz (Wolfdale) chip/board is newer than yours and my board only supports 8GB. Could be your board only supports 4GB, which would really blow to find out after you order 6GB! Once you've verified that, I'd definitely agree that if you've got less than 4GB this is your best & cheapest upgrade.

WAY, WAY too much free time! Very cool. Very impressive. But seriously, don't these guys have anything better to do? Make sure you stick with the video until the end where they show you how they managed this. Everything was so perfectly lined up I thought it had been composited instead of filmed.

Why does my HDV to DVD look like crap???
I personally didn't take John Cline's post as anything other than another data point. This thread (& others, I guess) has a bunch of data points of things going wrong, so it's nice to hear when folks have something's that's working well for them. He's repeating it in this thread because it's a new thread. If EVERYONE read EVERY thread, then there would only be *one* HD-->SD thread instead of it being the "most common thread." If someone else is having workflow success with my camera (or similar), then I want to hear about it. If I can't figure out a solution with my setup, then I'm definitely interested in hearing about rigs that seem immune from the problem. Maybe someone will eventually mention a great rig that I can actually afford! :)

Wonder if increasing the contrast instead of sharpness would have made your original look better? It looks more blah than blurry to my eyes.

How to get Digital Juice to work in Vegas
I'm not exactly sure what you're saying, but here's a few thoughts: - first, did you set the alpha channel of your DJ animation? Right-click the event, select Properties (at bottom of list), select Media tab, then set Alpha Channel (near bottom) to "Straight (unmatted)". - second, if the color of the DJ animation doesn't work right for a mask (black when you want white), then try throwing an "Invert" video FX on it to reverse the colors. If you just need to raise or lower the black/white levels (not black/white enough), then I think a "Levels" video FX will help that. - third, if the DJ animation doesn't have an alpha channel built into it, I think you'll have to a "Mask Generator" video FX on it to construct an alpha channel based on that event's overall luminance, or the brightness of the individual red/blue/green channels.

Tiling? Effect - How Do I Do it in Vegas?
Joey- Ultimate S has a trial period so you should be able to download and see if it will suit your needs. I'd guess that Excalibur (a similar scripting plug-in) would also have a trial period, so you can see which you prefer. Looks like VASST site is back up now. I also had problems with it earlier.

Tiling? Effect - How Do I Do it in Vegas?
Not sure what the effect is called, but the VASST Ultimate S plug-in will do this via its "Hollywood Squares" option on the Special FX tab. You can set how many rows & columns you want, whether you want to use the entire screen area or just what's inside the title safe area, and a couple different border options to separate the video/pictures (including none). There may be a free script floating around the internet to do the same thing, but I've found Ultimate S to be well worth the money for the other time-saving options it has. The other major Vegas plug-in/scripting competitor, Excalibur, might also do what you're looking for.

SSD Anyone?
If putting the pagefile on the SSD significantly reduces the life of that SSD, I wonder if it makes sense to buy a 2nd SSD that is small & pretty cheap dedicated to the pagefile? It'd sure be a lot cheaper to replace when it dies & you don't risk losing any data you care about or have to go through the pain of reinstalling Windows. Newegg has a 8GB SDD for $90, which still isn't cheap, but may be better than killing your $400 drive & data prematurely!

OT: Is Digital Juice Hard Up?
They seem to be introducing new products at a pretty fast clip. They're also producing & pushing a lot of (free) training videos. I think that's why you're seeing more email. As an aside for any relatively new guys, their training videos are pretty darn good. Even if you don't own the software (After Effects/Apple Motion/etc) that the video happens to use or the DJ products they are showing off, it's still great to see some different creativity. A number of effects/techniques can be replicated in Vegas from the non-Vegas products, although the more sophisticated compositing & 3D effects are completely beyond Vegas.

How do I make a 1k tone warble in Vegas?
Sidecar- If you'd like to be technically accurate, the normal IR tracking tone of the AIM-9M Sidewinder is a steady 1500 Hz, not a warbling 1000. In the newer version (AIM-9M-9) there are several different tones to indicate the Sidewinder is seeing (or thinks it is seeing) flares from the target aircraft and whether it thinks it can "hack" the IR countermeasures (flares). I forget the specifics on the different tones, but I'd suspect you're just looking for the normal lock-on tone anyway.

New Machine for Vegas 10 vs. Adobe Cs5
Shasta- I have to say I got lost in all the options you're looking at. My (lone) thought for the day is to consider how you're really going to use this system and when the next time you're going to upgrade is. If you need the editing power for your business, then I think the consensus of the pro users on this board (I'm not one) is that time is money & get the best system you can afford. If it's more for personal use, then perhaps you're on a different part of the price/performance curve. Are you really getting DOUBLE the performance for more than double the price? The $4600 system will crush the $2000 system now, but if you can't afford to replace that for 3-4 years, how will you feel the last couple years of that? If a $2000 system is pretty damn good right now & another brand new $2000 system purchased in 18-24 months (half your full-price replacement cycle) will crush the now "old" $4600 system, then your AVERAGE utility over the product lifetime is better with 2 x $2000 systems than 1 x $4600 system. I'm not familiar with any of these rigs, so can't comment on specifics -- just throwing some food for thought in here. I've wasted too much money buying some theoretical future benefit that was N/A by the time I wanted to/could afford to use it. All of my stuff is personal use, though, so I don't see a huge benefit to being on the bleeding edge. Brian

Processor speed vs. # of cores
Guy- Did your current workstation come pre-installed with a bunch of crapware? One of the big benefits of your self-built home system is you only installed what you wanted/needed. Once you get your new HP hex, you may want to Decrapify it. Maybe the Revo Uninstaller is better. Dunno.

customize image sequence
Ultimate S also can do this (export still frames from video). It's under the "Editing Tools" tab. I've never used it, but looks like you specify the start/end time of the video and you can capture/export images at markers you've set up, fixed number of frames (e.g. 15th, 30th like you mentioned) or at time increments. Images can be exported as either JPEG or PNG.

I wonder if SCS is thinking about making a compositing program such as After Effects or Motion that interacts well with Vegas? That'd be a major undertaking, but I'm thinking that's one of the steps to having a "complete package" like the other major players. Yes, we can just use AE for what we need, but it sounds like AE integrates well with Premeire to pass data back and forth. It's just a thought, but it might alleviate some of the "Vegas must do everything" requests they get.

OT: Reminiscent of Monty Python
The problem, as I see it, with living beyond your means, is that no matter how much your income increases through the years, your wants/needs will always increase at least as much. If you can't learn to live within your income as a 20-something making very little, you're still going to be spending more than you make when you're a 40-something as making quite a bit more. It's a hard lesson to learn (I had to learn the hard way!), but it's more about a mindset than an income level. There's always some new gadget, some new upgrade, some new toy (new iPhone or shoes as a 20-something, 4-wheeler or boat as a 40-something) that later is replaced by braces & college for your kids that keep you on the debt wheel without rest. And if you haven't not only lived *within* your means but *below* your means (so you can save/invest), then you'll soon find yourself a 60-something with nothing but a paltry social security check to retire on. Folks can piss & moan about not having enough money or they can DO something about it. After two good pay raises in successive years that were sure to be my "final solution" to not having enough money, I still didn't have enough to cover all the bills. My wants had magically outpaced my income at each step. It was hard, but I had to adjust my attitude right then & there to not only pay off the credit card each month but start putting money away. The savings started small, but with each subsequent pay raise, I only used half to increase my spending, the other half went towards savings. The vast majority of folks earn themselves pay raises between the ages of 20 & 40, yet the vast majority (of Americans) find themselves at age 40 with absolutely zero savings and plenty of debt. I'm not especilly brilliant & this ain't rocket science -- I'm just saying ...

OT: Google Leapfrogs Apple
Course- Have you been using an iPad? Although they're not for everyone, I see the appeal & think folks will come to use them in ways that haven't been thought of yet because this product hasn't existed before. Question, though: the combination of being fairly heavy & having a completely smooth back seems to make the iPad fatiguing to hold. Have you found that to be the case? I think they need to give up a little of the ultra-modern style and make it a little easier to grip on the next version. Brian

OT: Google Leapfrogs Apple
Apple is ABSOLUTELY interested in the volume market. Despite their elite appeal, they are a business in the end. I think the BMW/Honda comparison is apples & oranges. Apple is in the consumer market and while they can get away with a 10-20% premium for their "extra special" products, they can't get more than that. You BET Apple wants to DOMINATE any market that they get into; they just choose a different path than some (Google, Microsoft). The better comparison for the smartphone market is the iPod/MP3 business, which they are definitely the dominant player. The major difference between the iPod & iPhone success is that the iPod was a vastly superior product for a much, much longer time and Apple was able to completely define & dominate the market. The iPhone has been a great success, but because they went with an AT&T exclusive deal they weren't able to get to critical mass prior to a peer competitor coming out. The iPhone will continue to be successful & Apple will continue to make money. Even after Apple ends the AT&T exclusive deal, the iPhone will continue to be a closed system & Apple will likely be able to demand a small price premium for it. Very, very good chance, however, that Android will steal the numbers game & more app and aftermarket developers will support Android than Apple, and Google will enjoy a stronger revenue stream because of that. The iPhone will probably end up with a similar marketshare percentage as the Mac. If you think that Apple will be happy just with the noble thought that they have a superior product, you're smoking something. In the end, they are just as greedy (which isn't necessarily a bad thing) as everyone else. Domination is their goal.

I don't think iPhone fans are the target audience. Whether the iPhone (4.0) is marginally better than the Android (2.2) is mostly immaterial. The fact of the matter is that the iPhone was orders of magnitude better than the next best phone up until Android. While there are tons of iPhone fans that won't switch to Android, the smartphone market is only starting to be tapped, and all of the folks on the sidelines now have a choice. Unless Apple pulls some serious, serious magic out of the hat, we'll be jumping into the smartphone market this summer on the Android side, simply because I refuse to be an AT&T customer. I can forgive Apple's overly tight control of the phone & apps, but I can't abide by a crappy network. Apple is going to miss out on A LOT of customers by continuing their exclusive deal with AT&T. Apple may or may not have the superior phone once the update dust settles, but I think Google will have the numbers/customers advantage in relatively short order.

Sony - I Can Not Believe It
Tim- I see your point, but have to disagree a bit with you. This forum is also where smart individuals would go to see what the users think of the product before they plunk their money down on Vegas. In the last year or two I've noticed a lot fewer success stories ("check out my new video ...") and a lot more ranting about problems. No doubt there are more problems, but a lot of them are weird conflicts with individual computers. The general tone of the forum these days makes it sound like Vegas is total shite for anything other than SD, which I don't believe to be the case. This forum shouldn't be a fanboy-fest, but it's for far more than just problems/solutions. It's also for peer reviews, new ideas, semi-related notices that you'd never know without this forum, and yes, the occasional success story.

ProType Titler - Now it all makes sense!
Grazie- it's far from ideal, but you can use an eye-dropper from another effect to get the color values you need & then type those into PTT, can't you? Hardly the easy way it should be, but at least you can get the color correct without guessing/adjusting a million times.

pan/zoom around background pic with elements
Rory- I'm on board with what you're suggesting, but from what I've seen, Track Motion/Parent Track Motion look terrible if used to zoom. I forget exactly why. I seem to remember it having to do with the video signal flow (p. 39 of VP8 manual). By the time the image gets to the Track Motion processing the amount of image info is limited (hmmm ... I'm guessing max image size at this point is equal to project size, but not sure), so zooming in on it results in a pixelated "digital zoom" and it looks bad. Hmmm ... I wonder if increasing my project size to HD would improve the Track Motion processing any, or if I'm totally wrong on the science behind this? In any case, Track Motion turns out to be a terrible way to zoom. I've heard it on this forum before ("zoom with Pan/Crop, move with Track Motion) & now I've seen the results myself. Chien- I'm not asking Vegas to be an awesome 3D compositor like AE (I'm assuming people think AE is good; I've never used it) ... it'd just be nice if Vegas would give us some better handling of images that are either completely off screen or just extend off screen. It'd also be nice if the basic 3D capabilities that do exist didn't degrade our images so much. I imagine image quality is paramount to most folks (especially those getting paid to edit!), and basic 3D handling seems to be a relatively common requirement these days. I've no idea if Premiere/FCP/Avid do any better at this, but as a big fan of Vegas, I was surprised to discover this limitation in Track Motion. Porpoise- Blender looks cool! Hard to beat free, either. I wonder how many years it would take me to learn that software? It's far more sophisticated than I! Thanks for the link/idea. I bookmarked that for when I have the time for some serious learning. What do *you* use Blender for? Are you a more serious user, or do you mostly use it like I describe using AE below? So ... what do Vegas folks use for 3D compositing that slightly exceeds VP's capabilities, but doesn't require 3D extrusions/modeling? Is AE the primary tool? And do folks usually just do the required composite within AE & import back into Vegas or use AE exclusively for those videos that require more than Vegas has?
