The quake script is almost certainly a good (& FREE!) solution for what you're looking for. If you're looking to pick up a "package" of effects, New Blue FX is held in high esteem in this forum and their Motion Effects (either "Active Camera" or "Earthquake") package would suite you as well. XLA- JetDV has got a lot of tutorials over on his site. Ultimate S Pro: replacing cuts with transitions
Mega, I don't have my editing computer here & I haven't used Ultimate S much, but I'm pretty sure you have to select the events before you bring up Ultimate S (the "event" option will only work on *selected* events). Pretty sure you can right-click on an event and there should be an option to "Select events to end". If you want to apply something on multiple tracks at the same time, hold down the CTRL (or maybe SHIFT?) key and do the same thing on the different tracks you want, then apply the US function you want. OT: Need New Monitor
I don't think pixel response time is a real issue for LCDs these days. The only question is how much of a video "purist" are you, as the color accuracy isn't as good as CRTs. If you're not a hard-core editor then your options are wide open. And even if you are, you may be better off at your price point to get a normal LCD & just hook up a small television as a secondary screen to preview. That way you get the EXACT preview of what the colors, screen size, etc. will look like on a PAL TV. I don't have a TV preview set up myself, so I can't help you there. If interested, search this forum on such words as "TV preview monitor" for more. Also can't help you much on LCD tips, but I'd definitely recommend a widescreen to move your preview window & docking tabs off to the side so you can work with your timeline easier. I've got a 24" wide that works nice. Brian

laptop help please
There's a 64-bit version coming out this month (Sep), which I think will be a free upgrade for VP8 users. Sounds like Sony will release 32 & 64-bit versions in parallel for awhile. If you want to be able to take advantage of the 64-bit version you'll need the right OS, the 64-bit version of Vista or XP. For speculation on what may or may not be in the new release or what may or may not be advantages of 64-bits you'll have to search on "Vegas 9" or "64-bit". Brian

Applying the masks in SV8 Pro
Help file? There's a help file? Next thing you're going to tell me is there's a manual for this program, too! Huh, I follow your/the help file directions, but that's only a partial solution for me in VP8. The white pixels in the mask (parent track) allows the image (child track) to show through, but the black pixels in the mask just show up as black. When I add the Mask Generator to the mask or mask track the black pixels result in a transparent pixel, which allows any tracks below the child to show through. This is the mask behavior I expect, as I don't expect anything of the mask image itself to end up in the final product. I expect the mask to merely be a "template" for what to allow through (or not allow through). It's the same whether I use a pure black & white event or a grayscale event as a mask. Guess the Sony directions don't account for any tracks below showing through. Brian

Friar- Your method didn't work for me. What did is: - put the mask event on track 1 & subject event on track 2 - make track 2 a child of track 1 - change the compositing mode of track 1 to "multiply (mask)" (note: leave the "Parent Compositing Mode" as source alpha) - then click on the track 1 Track FX button & add the "Sony Mask Generator" effect Having to add the "mask generator" seems a little more complicated than needed, but it does add a lot of control to exactly how the mask functions. I couldn't get it to work any other way, but it seems there's always more than one way to do things in Vegas. Is there an easier solution? Thanks to JetDV (Edward) for his Vol 3, issue 1 newsletter which cleared this up for me! Brian

OT: Seagate 7200.10 ST3500630AS 500GB $69.99
Seems like Seagate had some good years where their drives were reliable, reasonably fast, very quiet & very cool. I was a big fan. Unfortunately, a 300GB (either a .9 or .10 version) completely crapped out on me so bad I had to send it off for a pretty expensive data recovery. I hadn't backed-up in a couple years and the heads had completely crashed (according to the data recovery company). After that $800 lesson (ouch!), I'm not such a big fan. Only one data point, though. Have others been hearing this about Seagate drives recently?

Cost Effective Upgrade
Ulf- I've read of numerous folks who received a refund from Sony for the difference between the special "early-bird" upgrade price and what you paid. It's been a while now, so it may not work, but I think if you email Customer Service with the date of purchase, purchase price, & a scanned receipt they might hook you up! Brian

Phonetic Alphabet - HELP
Well, you can figure out what the ASCII value of each is and hold down the ALT key while entering a 3-digit number (ALT-152 = ÿ (a "y" with two dots over it, if it doesn't show right on this forum)). However, an easier way that I just validated is to use MS Word's Insert Symbol function to make a list of symbols you need, then Copy / Paste them into Vegas. I just created / pasted the four symbols below into the ProTitler text with no issues: ёѐüă edit -- hmmm, I see this didn't show correctly. It was supposed to be various vowels with accents and dots over them. Brian

Anybody Tried The Phenom Chips?
It doesn't sound like V8 is having problems with the Phenoms, just the Intel quads. Thankfully the problems are only affecting a minority of quad owners (a significant minority, though). Because it's not affecting everyone, it gives me hope that an interim release of V8 could solve the problem. Hope so, because I'm about to make the quad-core plunge myself. If I had an upgrade path from my AMD to Phenom, I'd just do that since it would be way cheaper. Since I need a new motherboard & RAM anyway, though, I'm MUCH better off going with the Intel. I love an underdog, so AMD's latest buffoonery really bums me out. Sounds like the Phenom is basically maxxed out at whatever clockrate you buy (i.e. can't be overclocked), but the Intel quads have A LOT of headroom to overclock. Buy a 2.4Ghz Phenom and you're basically stuck there. Buy a 2.4Ghz Intel and you can VERY easily bump that to 3.0Ghz or higher using only the stock cooler. That's impressive! I hope AMD has better luck with their 45nm process later this year.

Vegas vs. Movie Studio
Did Movie Studio ever get "scripting" support? A lot of folks write some pretty cool scripts that you can download free for Vegas (like the earthquake effect amongst many, many others), and I think some plugins, like VASST's Ultimate S, use the script feature. A lot of power here beyond the basic editing (which Studio is very good at). Vegas Pro 8 also added the Pro Type Titler, which isn't perfect, but adds a lot more power & control to text presentation. Movie Studio probably has more power/options than *I* truly need now, but it's nice to not be hemmed-in by limitations when the need arises, and it's also nice to gain some basic familiarity with the more advanced options for the time when I actually need them. Vegas costs more to upgrade versions (usually $150) than MS, so if ongoing costs are a concern, then you'd probably be best to stick with MS until you actually need the full Vegas.

64-bit Vegas?
Rob- Yeah, I think I've finally learned my lesson on excessive "future-proofing" of my hardware. Too many times have I bought the expensive video card, expensive RAM, or a certain chip/motherboard because it might be important for the future. By the time the need actually arrived it was time to upgrade the entire rig, or something else became the bottleneck. Personally haven't made the leap to Vista, and not sure when I will. No real compelling reason for me at this time ... maybe Vegas 64 will change that. Always excited to see Vegas do well, though, so hoping this 64-bit upgrade would help put it "on the map" vs the competition. The sooner to market the better, but they've definitely got to get it right first!

Setting Up my PC's drives
Chien- If you have more than more drive or partition, you can move the My Documents to there, which will vastly shorten the tree for you (i.e. D:\My Documents\letters ...). Of course, you could also just move it to the root level of your C: drive and achieve the same thing. Yes, the My Documents is a pain with the legacy software, especially since you probably have the weird DOS 8 character abbreviation that you have to type. Of course, if it gets to be too much you can always pull out the old cassette tape drive that served as storage for those old Trash 80s & Apple IIs. I was fortunate to be able to pick up a used Apple II with a floppy drive, so big stuff!

64-bit Vegas?
Okay, so I finally dug up the April 16th press release, which says: "Sony Creative Software plans to release a 64-bit version of Vegas software by the end of 2007." So, are they having development problems or is this delayed strategically? I seems like Vista has pretty much been a bomb ... not had the adoption rate expected. Wonder if SCS looked at the # of potential users and decided to slow track 64-bit Vegas ... maybe to coincide with Vista SP1. Wonder if VPro8 was a planned release all along, or if it was more of an interim update to mollify us while 64-bit Vegas slipped? Well ... there's still two shopping days left in 2007, so I won't put the final nail in this announcement's coffin, but the total silence on the subject is not encouraging. Brian

Chien- I don't think you can get rid of it, although you could just ignore it & manually put your stuff wherever you want. That's a lot to overcome, though, and I don't understand the benefit to going old school. Pretty much every program written in the last ten years defaults to saving data in your My Documents folder location, so it conveniently brings you to a fixed location. I recognized that this folder would get trashed very quickly, so I have sub-folders for things that work for me ("Word files," "Excel files," "Downloads," etc.). I generally separate my data on a different hard drive, and the My Documents function makes this easy. All of my data is in one location, except for Captures & Renders, but I can set those default locations from within Vegas, so I'm good. I'm not sure why you'd want to fight the OS on this, and I'm an old school guy throwing back to DOS (heck, actually the Apple II). Brian

There's at least one guy from New Blue that posts here every now and then, usually in threads about New Blue. Do a search on "New Blue" and you'll find him. There may be contact info in his signature block, or at least you can email him via the forum email. I'm not sure that Spot/DSE would have any better contact info than what's on their website, since New Blue is a different company than Spot & the folks at VASST. Brian

Slightly OT: AMD Processor Upgrade for HDV
If you end up upgrading the motherboard anyway, it sounds like the Intel Core 2 Quads are performing better than the Phenom (comparable price point, not even including the $1K+ Extreme versions). While I love an underdog and am a current AMD owner, Intel has finally made up for their earlier missteps. While their "quad" isn't a "true quad" like the Phenom, the power consumption and heat generated are on par and the overall performance is better at the same price point. My current motherboard (ASUS A8N-SLI Premium) is giving me fits, so I'm going to be switching to the dark side soon. Conveniently I have to wait until January before I'll have time, and the new 45nm versions (Yorkfield) should be out then. I don't think the Phenom is a bad chip, just Intel is better these days. If you have a cheap upgrade path with AMD then that's probably your best bet. If you're starting from scratch then you might consider the alternatives. Brian

Slightly OT: ProType = preview of V9?
Ah yes, "built for Vegas from the ground up" vs. "built by SCS." Darn! That thread got side-tracked on credit rolls & farsi, so we never got a definitive answer to who did the coding, but I suspect you're right. I haven't dug into it to detect all the interface differences, but on the surface it seemed to be significantly more "serious" than Vegas looks. Moving to 64-bit seems like a major change that might bring other major changes. Since they answered the long-standing improved titler, 10-bit (32!), & multi-cam requests, it only seemed logical that they might address the appearance, too. Oh well. Doesn't matter to me. I don't have clients to impress.

OT: Historical computers
It was 1982 & the Apple ][ for me, with an optional 16KB add-in board AND an optional programming ROM board (had the Apple BASIC that came on the ][+ vs. the Integer BASIC on the ][). Very stylin' with a floppy drive, too! Anyone else out there manually type in assembly code from Nibble magazine? One thing that still amazes me about the Apple ][ is how they could coax recognizable sound out of that crappy speaker. Anyone remember Castle Wolfenstein? Achtung! Brian
