Sonic announces affordable BluRay authoring
It seems the folks at Madison aren't shy about adding features in the point releases instead of just bug fixes. I wouldn't be at all surprised to see some type of HD-DVD or BluRay support in DVDA 4b. May give us basic support and save the advanced code for the version 5. Be surprised if we don't see something relatively soon.

Porting Sony software features to Vegas
Brian, I don't use the other stuff enough to add to your list, but I'll second your first nomination (nested tracks like Acid) while bumping this thread up for more inputs. Hate to give up all that vertical room on the timeline just for a semi-complex title series -- just collapse them down to one track with a single click! Brian

Photoshop vs. Elements
Sounds like a lot of votes for Elements. Strange that Adobe enables & disables different features of Elements with each version. Thanks for the point to that book/website - looks good. Hopefully he'll come out with an Elements 5 version soon. Brian

Random Ideas For Vegas 8.0 Feature List
I think the other Brian covered this, but it should be darn easy: - be able to contract multiple tracks into one group for display purposes (and later expand it again by clicking on the "+" sign, just like Windows Explorer). Acid 6 already does this. So much nicer than giving up valuable screen space to a bunch of composited tracks for a special title or something. Brian

OT: Wanted - Canon Elura
David, Ever had (or heard of) a problem with the volume/menu wheel ceasing to function on your Elura? Mine seems to have that problem now. Sometimes a sideways pressure on the wheel will help, sometimes not. I've recently upgraded to the Sony HC1 (very nice!), but wish to keep the Elura if I ever want to do a multi-camera event. I appreciate your ferver for the Elura - I'm no expert, but it's been a great camera for me! Well, except for the battery draining if you leave it connected. Brian

pan/crop: slow-in, slow-out
I can't tell if the "smoothness" setting does anything for the zoom/crop. It definitely affects pans (to visuallize set three keyframes. move straight right to the second keyframe, and then straight up to the third keyframe. With Smoothness of 0, it's a hard 90 degree change. With Smoothness of 100, the motion is a rounded blend to up). I don't see a difference between 0 & 100 when conducting a zoom test, but that a very quick, very unscientific test. B

How to have text crumble like sand?
Bob- Using your previous low-tech method, couldn't you crease the blue/green (I'm thinking posterboard here) with about a 1 inch ridge just below the text? Then when you blow the sand letters down from the top, the sand would end up in piles at the crease.

What is the C in trimmer for?
Maybe I'm missing the boat here, but Ctrl-C & P work just normal for me. I'm using V5 on a laptop at the moment, but here's what I just validated (this is not my normal workflow, just curious): - highlight a section of footage in the Trimmer - hit Ctrl-C - select a video track by clicking on the track - hit Ctrl-P = copied selection ends up where the cursor was on the track I selected No menus pre-opened or anything weird. Confirm you haven't accidentally re-assigned the Ctrl-C or P keys to something else? Brian

Vegas 7 Sneak Peak
I imagine the "snap points across tracks" allows a *pure* use of markers. For those who pass the markers to DVDA to use as chapter points, you could now use markers for that and use Snap Points to simply line up events. No need to delete "line up" markers prior to rendering or remember which markers are which once in DVDA. I'm sure there are other angles too. Minor refinement.

Time? I didn't think that a public event like WEVA would end up being a hush-hush showing of VV7. I thought there was going to be a limited demo of some of the new features and that that information was going to be available to the public. Did Sony elect to not show VV7 at all, or did it show it but force everyone into a non-disclosure? Surely the non-disclosure wouldn't restrict folks from saying that, yes, it was shown ...

It's the evening of the 24th --- how'd the WEVA go? Any good looks at Vegas 7? Anything good at WEVA at all? Surprised we haven't heard anything on this forum. Frustratingly enough, I happen to be in Vegas for business, but I don't have enough time to get down to Mandalay Bay and check it out. No hooky for me, unfortunately. And I'm living in Italy these days and haven't been to the States in over a year, so it's even more of a coincidence that I'm in the right town at the right time. Brian

Add lighteffect to a picture in V6?
Interesting that in the first example Kriz links to, only the red on the motorcycle is affected by the "spotlight." What would be the easiest way to duplicate that in Vegas? Chromakey out everything but the red for a mask, then apply the spotlight on the red (result of mask) and finally have the original image on the very bottom to fill in the rest of the picture? Is there an easier, more elegant solution? Brian

Need Help: Is Vegas or MS+DVD for Me ?
Many, many Pinanncle refugees here. I used PS 7/8 before moving to Sony Movie Studio v3. No comparison. Used that for six months before I had some spare cash to upgrade to Vegas 5 (and discovered academic pricing (exact same product, but much cheaper if you qualify)). If you have the cash to spare, I can't see any disadvantage to getting Vegas vs. Vegas MS. The interface is essentially the same, just a lot more options. I don't use the vast majority of the options/power of Vegas, but it's nice to have when I need it. Vegas MS is a great product and would probably meet your needs (it would mine). Nice to have the relatively open-ended options of the full Vegas, though. And if you upgrade later, the MS project files can't be opened with Vegas, so you couldn't open an old project and change it with Vegas. If you find yourself tweaking old projects or reusing "templates" for projects, then it's probably best to jump to the full Vegas now. Otherwise it's purely a cash vs. features choice. Rock steady stabilty is a given in either program, though, so either one will make you so much happier than Pinnacle! Oh, and these forums are awesome places to learn new tricks, get questions answered, and see great examples. This Forum is what decided it for me between Vegas & Adobe. Brian

HDV with Vegas 5 / Gearshift?
Thanks everyone for clarifying this. I'm probably one of the few too cheap to upgrade to V6 but looking to buy a HDV camera. I ordered the HC1 from good ole' B&H yesterday (stand by for questions on a good, but subtle external mic for the HC1...), and will have to pick up Gearshift soon. Lots of good feedback on that program from different sources. Now just waiting for the postman (and V7!) ...

JR- So, if I get the HC1 & Gearshift, then my process is to capture the HDV (via CapDVHS), use Gearshift to generate a proxy, edit normally in Vegas 5, and then somehow V5 will use the HDV .m2t file "natively" and render me a normal MPEG2 that I can burn to a standard DVD? Using this process can I zoom in & shift the focus around in the video and not get pixelation like you would zooming in on SD video source? Or is the only benefit to a V5 user just the better color space of HDV?

Free sound effects and stock video
The Prelinger Archive has lots of stock footage that's public domain (like old commercials, etc.). Looks like they have quite a bit of audio, too (public speeches, etc.). http://www.archive.org/details/prelinger Here's a site that lets you search for sounds on the internet. Only used it a couple times, but it generates a "visual" of the sound effect, so you can see the characteristics (i.e. how fast it decays, how many hits, etc.) of the sound before you download & listen to it. http://www.findsounds.com/ Brian

OT: NAB / I'm concerned about Vegas
Although I'm not a "pro" Vegas user, nor a Vegas beta tester, I have high hopes for a great release of the next version of Vegas. Why? Good omens recently: - The Acid Pro 6 release seems extremely well regarded by those who use Acid. - Cinescore also seems like a solid product on it's very first release. - Sony is taking their time with this release of Vegas, not rushing it for NAB. I hate the wait (I've got upgrade cash burning a serious hole in my pocket!), but this is better than a crappy release. - Spot, who *is* "in the know" as a beta tester, is still happy to stay the course. Hardly the definitive word, I know, but given the first three bullets above I like the odds. Who knows what features V7 will/won't have, but I'm betting it'll be the most significant release in some time. Now, if Sony could only get some kick-ass marketing to go along with it ... Brian
