V14 W10 Tiny Buttons
On high pixel density displays on laptops, this may become a problem for software that uses pixel size for everything (all older Windows software). Check your scaling settings in Windows 10. It might solve your problem.

Ready to buy a new Camcorder

Perhaps I fail to see some of the ergonomic limitations of the camera vs camcorder situation since I have spent some time building a rig that works and over comes most the limitations. Today I don't see my self shooting anything but 4K, so that is critical to me. Both to future proof but also due to the much better quality 1080P I can deliver from a 4K material than is possible with a 1080P source. I have never used the prosumer-style 4K camcorders, so I don't know what the quality is like, but my concern would be the increased pixel density and inevitable shrinkage of the photosites. Obviously that's also a problem on cameras like the A7RII, which still has excellent DR and noise levels. So, perhaps my skepticism is entirely unfounded :-)

Vegas Alternatives
@deusx Considering the fact that you use a Panasonic GH4, your praise of Vegas over Resolve seems a little fanboi-ish to me. Why? Here's my situation: Panasonic footage on Vegas time line hasn't worked since the GH2 at least, and the problem has been ignored by SCS. There are scripts to fix the "bad code" in Vegas, but it is an OOOOOOLD problem that no other software has. So, Vegas is, by your measures CRAP! I drop Pana Cine-D footage on my time line, add Fiilm Convert, click play from start. Within 5 seconds Vegas crashes. I have one installation of Film Convert on my PC, it works great as an OFX plugin and a Premiere Plugin elsewhere, so Vegas is, by your measures CRAP! Premiere and Vegas on the same computer using the same version of Film Convert so it is not a Film Convert issue, it's a Vegas issue. I have [...] tried Vegas mauals (sic.) and support pages. Just does not work. So I guess Vegas has some unVegased (hmmm, that didn't work) issues here.

@deusx >> Resolve is a joke. By your definition, so is Vegas. I run Premiere, Resolve, Lightroom, Visual Studio and all kinds of stuff on my PC. Everything works wonderfully. Try to use Vegas and it crashes within seconds. Hyperbole is hyperbole.

Vegas Pro - Time To Think Again

Until the Magix acquisition I had decided that no matter what happened (and I wasn't expecting much to happen) I was not going to upgrade to VP14. I've upgraded from VP10 to VP13, though rarely using VP at all in favor of Premiere. I don't like editing in Premiere much, I like the integration with After Effects, I think the Adobe Media Encoder integration is also great where I can work on multiple projects, send a single project off to be rendered to a multitude of formats etc, queueing them up etc. I don't like the editing process in Premiere Pro at all though. It is far more intuitive in Vegas, even after several years now of Premiere work. The difference can be basically described as: When sitting down with Vegas I was looking forward to a few hours of work, I was happy to fire it up and I couldn't wait to get started. With PP it was more like a chore. I chore that had some pleasurable moments, but a chore all the same. Vegas is fun, PP is work. Sadly, Premiere has a feature that I am sorely missing in Vegas, so PP it is. The feature is: PP works, Vegas doesn't. It crashes, can't import my footage properly (SCS had apparently never heard of a camera manufacturer named Panasonic) and is generally a fun way to make my day eight hours of utter frustration. PP is a chore, but I have always been able to sit down, do the chore, and finish the day. I have not had that ability with Vegas since VP9 and SD footage. I hope, with all my heart, that Magix will fix important parts of Vegas in the next 12 months. Don't bother with new features at all, just fix the stuff that doesn't work. Remove the dumb titler that nobody ever used. Get rid of the 3D nonsense. Clutter is clutter. I want a fast, efficient, stable video editor with a core set of functioning features. Make sure you can use standard plugins, and voila, I will become a Vegas user again.

Vegas Pro - Time To Think Again

Vegas has the best editing experience of any video editor I've ever tried, but the SCS transition was, if you look at the result, a cluster...k. Sorry. Vegas has basically been "add dumb-ass, non-relevant features one after the other, but totally ignore serious issues that have plagued the product for years and years". When Sony took over SCS all MY fears came to pass and a bunch of new ones to boot. I am hoping that the Magix acquisition is going to go well, and I am certainly going to upgrade to the new version no matter what quality it is when released (I want to help them succeed) but I am not going to cancel my CC subscription in September for sure.

SURVEY: Would you upgrade to VP14 if...
Adding to that list - Works with Film Convert (currently crashes all the time) - Can handle Panasonic GH(2/3/4) footage - Can handle Sony 4K footage (A7RII, A6300) Then the answer is yes. I have upgraded every single time even though Sony is no longer my editing system of choice, if it starts working again it will be. Also - tip - The PPro idea of adjustment layers is a REALLY good idea. I recommend trying to also add such a feature.

Ready to buy a new Camcorder
Just out of curiosity - and not trying to be facetious What is the attraction of these types camcorders these days over mirrorless or DSLR cameras? Ergonomics is obviously slightly better, but for image quality you can't really beat the cameras, can you? I mean, you have bigger sensors, perhaps MUCH bigger sensors with better dynamic range, often better codecs (not always), better color etc. You also get the advantage of changing optics to suit the situation whereas for a camcorder you are usually stuck with a single piece of glass. You can get proper Cine glass for these cameras, you can shoot with old (and fantastic) glass. Wherein lies the attraction of a camcorder? If you go for the lower end, for example, the Panasonic GX85. Is there any camcorder in the price range that can touch it? The sensor is bigger, there is fantastic glass available, it can shoot 4K which, when scaled to 1080P blows just about any recorded 1080P footage out of the water. The Sony A7S, which you can also get used for a reasonable sum of money can literally see in the dark and can hold its own (not fully, but far more so than most camcorders) against professional stuff gear at ten times the price. I used to shoot Canon a lot, but there is (almost) nothing Canon offers today in the sub $10K range that can match the better DSLRs and Mirrorless cameras out there. Just curious.

This could be related to my PC, my graphics card, Vegas etc, it could be related to a lot of stuff, but... Then I fire up Premiere Pro. It imports my GH4 footage no problems. I add a adjustment layer and apply Filmconvert. No crash. No issue. Everything just works. I really don't like the work-flow of Premiere, but as it is the only solution that I have that works, Premiere it is. I have started thinking about upgrading my PC, it's a hexacore and works well, but my MacBook Pro is also quite awesome. Perhaps I'll use FCPX in the future, I'm not sure. If I do upgrade to a Mac as my workstation, I doubt I would put SCS software on it. Why should I? There is a very important saying I used a lot when teaching sales staff how to maintain good relationships with their customers. It goes something like: "You build trust inch by inch. You tear it down mile by mile." A LOT of miles have gone by since Vegas 9. Finally, we can all have hope that Vegas, under new management, will improve by leaps and bounds. I can understand that developers have such hope, but Gary, have you ever witnessed a situation where a SW company in trouble was purchased by another vendor, and the situation for the customers of the original vendor actually improved? I've witnessed a lot of acquisitions in my time, and I can't really think of any off the top of my head, where things were better twelve months after the acquisition than they were before.

RedShark on MAGIX Purchase
The vast majority of software acquisitions end up being failures. In this case, the brain-power of the SCS team is probably mostly gone already. This means that Magix is going to have to invest at least six months in just learning the ins-and-outs of the new software source. Probably no less than 6-10 developers. That's three to five man-years of investment just to get up and running. Then there will be another six months until any real changes can be made. My bet, but I'd love to be wrong, is that we'll end up with Vegas users getting a good deal on upgrading to Magix software and that's it.

Vegas Alternatives
I moved to PP somewhere around the middle of Vegas 11. I have bought every upgrade since, hoping against hope that SCS would eventually fix Vegas. Having a big Windows rig, FCP was never an option, but for various reasons I am now in possession of a Mac, and when vacation strikes, I will spend a few days looking into FCP X too. It looks like an attractive alternative, and even though PP works, I don't really like the work flow. Maybe I'll become a Mac dude in my old age :-)

Oh, for heavens sake: >> Vegas won't "stop working For some of us it hasn't worked in years, and bugs that are years and years old are completely ignored by SCS. I loved Vegas, and I still think it has the very best work flow, but for me it hasn't worked since version 9. I still have to keep 9 around to open some of the older projects. If I try to open them in later versions I only get "Vegas has stopped working" or, if the day is a good one, Vegas will allow me to make minor modifications and then it crashes. If I start a new project in any of the later versions of Vegas and I apply "Film Look", Vegas will crash within seconds. Shoting with Log profiles, not having access to this plugin as a pain in the neck, and that alone makes me use Premiere. Vegas now has, what three(?) titlers. None of them work all that well. The original is a little primitive, then there was the new titler which was alluring, but useless the day it was released, with so many problems it was 100% unusable. It was NEVER attended to and stayed a useless piece of junk until SCS decided to include a third party tool It had potential, but it was developed once, by one developer, who probably quit, and then it was NEVER attended to. A company must understand that it is the existing customer base that keeps it alive, even those who do not upgrade every version. The thing that keeps old customers hanging on is QUALITY, all the way. It is fixing bugs. Adding fancy (and some times really DUMB, yeah, 3D) features left and right may attract new curious customers, but if it happens at the cost of fixing old bugs, your existing customer base is going to grow tired of your nonsense and find a company that actually cares about their customer base. Say whet you will about Adobe, but they do TRY to fix bugs. More often than not they are able to. SCS has barely tried since they became Sony.

I have a number of projects that can only be opened in older versions of Vegas, and any problem reported to SCS is completely ignored. In the end, quality usually sells, and since SF was bough by Sony, quality has been going down hill at a faster and faster speed.

NAB 2016 - No Sony Creative Software Showing???
If I was an adviser on the other side of such a deal I would look at the following aspects: 1/ How long do I expect I can be able to sell the current version of the SW 2/ Is there any way I can squeeze more money out of existing customers without upgrading the SW 3/ What will be the cost of letting all developers go and moving the support and marketing folks into my existing office location The sad truth is the following: 1/ Probably not long, most people are not THAT stupid, I could probably sell the Studio products for a little while though 2/ Probably not, if the software already was designed in such a way that I could make it check licenses every month, I could perhaps squeeze some subscription dollars out of a few of them, but probably not 3/ Probably not that high Summing this up my advice to ANY potential buyer would be "not worth it". Adding more features and fixing bugs is going to be exorbitantly expensive, with little possibility of getting the investment back. There is no real possibility of getting any revenue from existing customers without a major investment in development. It would be easier, faster and less costly to write a new version from scratch, using the current version as a "design document". As I said, I'd vote, not worth it, not at any price. Would probably become a liability in any and all possible scenarios. To a user I would say: "Just walk away. If your career is dependent on this product, your career is now in jeopardy. Fix it. Any way you can". I would love to be wrong, but would be hugely surprised if I was. IF someone has had the guts to re-design Catalyst to become Vegas, well, that would be miraculous and nice. I stopped believing in miracles when I figured out Santa though.

NAB 2016 - No Sony Creative Software Showing???
The comments on glassdoor reflect what has been obvious for several years. The newer rumors of a Vegas 14 are interesting, but probably will not pan out. I'd be surprised if we see anything worth while from SCS in the future. That goes for both the newer and their old product line. At this point in time i would be willing to bet that the thing engineers are busy doing at SCS is polishing their resumes.

Re-write Vegas from scratch. My bet would be that the Catalyst project has been an (economically) abject failure, and they are trying a hail Mary pass, perhaps with some of the stuff they have done in Catalyst. If this is true, it is all good news, and I'd revisit Vegas instantly. The work flow can not be beat, and if the innards are upgraded to a post 2005 world, that would make Vegas an option again. I'd love that. Premiere is great (comparatively) and it actually works, an actually working version of Vegas would be fantastic.

The above is a little bit like a carpenter saying that he could not do his job without DeWALT. A tool is a tool, every tool (of note) will get you there. Learning how is the only thing. Sure, I prefer the Vegas work-flow over the Premiere work-flow, but Premiere works and works and works (for my projects). So I use Premiere.

Apple Updates iMacs…time to buy a new 4k iMac.

I have been using Windows PCs all the way, but I put as many Unix-like tools on them as I can when I get them. At work I am considered a little bit of a Microsoft fan since, IMnsHO, Microsoft makes the best development tools on this planet. Recently I got a MacBook Pro since I need to do some mobile development, and for iOS that means having a Mac. Haven't used Macs much since the early 1990s. Sorry to say this GeeBax, but you are, objectively, measurably, quantifiably wrong. Macs are for people who love computers. Macs are for the Uber-geeks. Macs are Linux/Minix/Solaris boxes with actual usable software. And Unix beneath. I can run X apps on my MacBook Pro. Now Visual Studio Code is on Apple. All of the wonderful .NET stuff is going open-source and multi-platform (both Linux and OS X). I am a geek. I am a tinkerer. I work with computers because I love it. I love my new MacBook. It has flaws, that moronic keyboard layout for one, but I still love it. It has personality. It has uber-geek flavor galore. It has class too, and it runs all the software I need (Adobe for example). Windows PCs is for people who are business-oriented lazy and scared. Apple is for geeks, and I am assure you that the reason Mac sales are up is because uber-geeks are buying them in droves. For geeks, Apple is the bomb right now. Just have to ignore their attempts at tying you up.
