OT: Windows 10
You are absolutely right that Win8 has failed in the business environment. There is basically a single, obvious reason for that. For the past few years business has (and still is) desperately trying to get off WinXP onto Win7. There is no compelling reason to go to Win8 except for touch-enabled devices. Windows 8 has about half the market share of what Windows XP had at about the same time in its life span. Again, this seems like a serious failure on part of Win8, but it actually is a little less so than the numbers would indicate. For two reasons: 1/ If you align the numbers with the growth in PC sales, Win 8 is not doing too bad. People rarely upgrade their OS, they get a new OS with a new PC. PC sales are declining while back then they were growing significantly. A growth in PC sales will increase the transition rate, a decline will do the opposite. 2/ Most people skipped Win2K and went from W98 or even 95 to XP. That transition is very, very significant. XP is a protected-mode real 32 bit system while 95/98/ME was a 16/32 bit shell on top of an 8 bit real-mode DOS (there is no DOS in XP). In case of stability, ability to utilize the RAM that came with your PC etc, Win XP was a HUGE leap forward. Since Win7 is an excellent 64 bit OS (Vista was too), that is where the upgrade benefit was. If you want to use 8G (or even all of your 4G) you dont *need* to go to Win8, that was not the case for WinXP. Also, as a reminder: People HATED the Windows XP user interface. At least as much as they hate Windows 8. The XP nostalgia is, as nostalgia always is, devastated by its Alzheimer's memory problems. Windows XP was widely assumed to end up as a flop for many reasons. Activation was one. The "Fisher Price", or even "Teletubby" user interface was another. It's support for raw sockets was also (by a vocal minority) going to bring about the end of the Internet.

New X99 Computer for Editing GH4 4K Video in VP13
I can not remember where I read this, but for rendering on the GPU, GPU RAM is also apparently very, very important. The recommendation I read was 4G of GPU-RAM for 1080p rendering, and an absolute minimum of 8G for 4K video.

Here comes the new GoPro Hero4
with most flash cards you cap out at 35Mbps, and with some of the super fast flash cards you can get 45Mbps For the record, most cards are measured in mega bytes per second and video is usually measured in mega bits per second. There is an eight fold difference or so. So, yes, you are right, most cards will only do between 35 and 45 MB/s, which is quite fine in most cases for reasonably high bitrate video. I have shot quite a bit of 200Mb/s video on my Sandisk Extreme Pro cards which are marked at 95MB/s. There is a claim out there that you need faster cards for 4K video, but with the GH4 at least, that is not true. The extreme pro 95MB/s cards do 200Mb/s easily.

Vegas Editors: Why you'll love a Surface Pro
I have edited a bit on the Surface Pro 2, and it is an amazing machine. Beats anything from anyone when it comes to usability on the road. Nothing can touch it. It is also great for Photoshop once you install the Pen drivers for Photoshop. I wouldn't mind the bigger screen (and the i7) of the Surface Pro 3 though. Particularly the bigger screen. The Pro 2 is plenty fast for HD.

OT: quad copter drone with machine gun?
Looks like everything is fake. There is no way a quadcopter can withstand the recoil forces of a sub-machine gun like that. No way. It would have to be a lot heavier and have a lot more forward motion (and stability). There is a (more than one of course) reason drones fire rockets (no recoil),

$6,000 Budget for gear...

It should be called Hand-prolate-spheroid since the game is played with a prolate spherioid, NOT a ball and also, with the players hands (mostly) not their feet. I have no idea why American football is called football. It makes about as much sense as "The World Series" where only one country in the world is participating.

>> Linux is the way to go. It's a very strong, healthy, and rapidly growing market. Linux on the desktop has a smaller market share than Windows Phone 7, and the market share is shrinking, not growing. Porting to Linux would be nuts. Also, nobody would ever develop a plugin for Vegas on Linux.

$6,000 Budget for gear...
You're going to enjoy your gear. Go out and buy a speedbooster nikon/m43. Then forget about m43 lenses, go to KEH and get some fantastic used stuff for Nikon. I got a 100mm f/2.8 for about $100 in pristine condition. Sure, it is manual focus, but manual focus is what you want doing video, and quite frankly, given the fantastic ease of using manual focus on the GH4, I am using it more and more for stills too. In fact, I was at a soccer match yesterday shooting my home team (just for fun). I used the Nikon lens with a (none-speedbooster) converter, and I didn't miss a shot. Well, sorta, when the one and only goal came, a dude got in front of my cam just as I was starting to shoot. By the time I managed to get around him, the moment was gone and the ball was in the net :-)

OT Andriod Editing App Suggestion
Get a Surface Pro, 2 or 3 depending on the video you are editing. Runs Sony Vegas Pro like a dream - my Pro 2 has Vegas, Adobe CC (Premiere, Lightroom and PS) running. It works great. Will get a Pro 3 with an i7 some time soon.

It might even (theoretically) be a service. Yanking drives is just not smart behavior considering it takes "nanosecond" to eject it first, and then you are perfectly safe.

OT Andriod Editing App Suggestion
Don't do it. It's just frustrating. Tried Movie Studio and it was bad (slow for the simplest things). The problem is that (mobile) ARM is not very well suited for some tasks. Video editing being one. If it must be light and a tablet. Get a surface pro. I edited 4K video on my Surface Pro 2 with Premiere the other day. I obviously had to use proxies, but it worked very well. The Pro 3 should be even better.

@Steve Mann >> Unplug it This is incorrect, but not necessarily for the same reasons that you should not do this to a thumb drive. 1/ Data may be buffered, even on a spinning disk. but unlikely... 2/ and this one is important, an application may have a file open for writing on that disk, and if the app is not finished writing to it, the file data for that specific application may be corrupted. Nobody knows how any specific app stores data in files, and it is quite possible, or even probable, that an incomplete write will leave the file completely damaged. The OS will stop you from "ejecting" a disk that is still being written to. If you keep yanking drives on active systems, sooner or later you are going to be in trouble. The app may not even be an active app but some sort of service that some app/installer installed, so no active apps is no guarantee. Just eject the disk, once that is OK, yank it. No need to worry.

For lenses, if you are comfortable with manual focus, and for video you should be, and it is DEAD easy on the GH4, consider Nikon lenses. Old manual focus Nikon lenses can be had for a song and a couple of beads on a thread. They are fantastic quality, and with a cheap (or less cheap if you go metabones) they fit the GHx series (any M4/3) great. You can get an excellent quality 100mm f/2.8 for $100, a 300mm at twice that. A 50mm f/1.4 would set you back something similar. GHx, with an adapter an manual focus Nikon lenses are a match made in heaven for video.

If it takes too long, I might just throw caution to the wind and invest in a Nikon 50mm f/1.4 - it might set me back a terrible $150 though. I see some people questioning the value of shooting in 4K at this point in time. I like it. It means I can essentially "shoot" and edit 1080p 10 bit 4:4:4 in camera. "Only" at 100 mbit/s but that's OK. 4K downscales essentially to 1080p 10bit 4:4:4 for jaw-dropping results. Thanks to Magic Lantern I can shoot 1080p RAW with my 5D. The work-flow is a pain though, and you know what, the GH4 4K footage downscaled to 1080p, I don't like to say - blows the 5D out of the water, so I'll just say - is noticeably better. Oh, and the work-flow is of course a whole world better.

OT: Canon HV30 is DEAD (Heads). What Corder to Buy
My recommendation would be to wait for the Panasonic FZ1000 and see what that has in store for us. 4K video, 120 fps 1080p slow motion etc and so forth. We do not know what it will be, but if it shares some of the video quality with the GH4 (it won't match it) that should be a fantastic alternative. At $899 it isn't in GoPro price territory, but it isn't really expensive either.

Sony's A7s could be the new low-light champion

Well, look at the Panasonic GH4 for example. When shooting on SDHC cards, its acquisition format is 4K 8 bit 4:2:0. Drop that on a 1080p timeline and basically you will be editing 10 bit 4:4:4 video. That will give you spectacular results. I have been looking at the GH4 and the Sony A7s, and for me, the GH4 seems to have some very significant advantages. Some are mentioned here, but I would also add that, with an external recorder, the GH4 can deliver 4K 10 bit 4:2:2 video. Considering the amazing quality of its 4K 8 bit 4:2:0 down sampled to 1080, starting out with 4K 10 bit 4:2:2 should yield even more spectacular results. At the moment I think the GH4 is the one to beat, and it doesn't seem like anybody is wanting to compete. Yet. Apparently it sells like hot cakes and is difficult to keep in stock (as is the Panasonic 12-35 f/2.8 lens most people would get with it). I can understand that. From what I have seen, the GH4 blows the 5D iii with Magic Lantern RAW out of the water, even in low-light scenarios apparently. Seemingly it is a match (except for rolling shutter) for a Black Magic production camera too. Seems unlikely, but that's what "they" say.

They just added Cloud to the name to appear "hip". There are two main components to the Cloud. Cloud Storage and Cloud Computing. You could argue that CC is Cloud storage, but it isn't unless you use the online image storage facilities that was tacked on to the Adobe software. Adobe CC sure as heck is not Cloud Computing, all the "Computing" happens locally, not in the cloud. Like or hate the CC, it may be Creative but it isn't Cloud.

Zipping files for longterm storage

Given checksums in zips, that would normally mean that after zipping a file you would be unable to unzip it since the checksum was bad. What is not even theoretically possible is that it could gradually create video with lower quality since that would require the zip has knowledge of video compression. It doesn't. Even though we are talking about "compression". Compressing video (with resulting quality loss) is not the same as compressing a file with a zip utility. It is just our lack of language skills that makes us use the same word. What zip does and what a video compression tool does is "the same" in the same way that "apples" and "giraffes in captivity in Bosnia" is the same. Compressing video to get smaller files at the cost of quality requires knowledge of the human system of vision, it requires knowledge of color, shape and images. The compressor needs to know that a large surface of the color blue can be "compressed" into a smaller surface of blue and a description of how you take that small one and expand it to the original size while retaining as much of the original visual representation as possible. There are no zip utilities in the world with such knowledge. What deusx is reporting simply isn't possible. He's wrong, but to stubborn to even admit that possibility to him self. What he is saying is that Microsoft Word suddenly, and without warning, can edit video. By accident. It can't..

Zip utilities knows nothing about video, so if they stuff up, which they can do, as all software, it would show up as a damaged file, not reduced video quality. Lowering the quality of video requires intimate knowledge of video, image size-reduction algorithms etc. There is no such thing in zip. What deusx claims to see is impossible since zip is too dumb (as it relatsd to video to accomplish this).
