V8 ProType Reproducable Cast Exception Error
I reported this, included the stack trace, told them to send it to dev (the stack trace should make it trivial to find) and got a message back that since they didn't think I needed a follow-up, the ticket would be closed soon (automatic I think). I don't need a follow-up, but they should fix it. More concerned about the 3D rendering problem in HDV though. Can't do any 3D compositing right now.

V8 bug rendering 3D track motion?
Same here, I can not render anything in HD when I have 3D track motion enabled. Well, that is, if the timeline is overly simplistic, I can some times render a little, but most of the time no dice. My symptom is that Vegas renders to some point, then hangs for a while with high CPU, and then just stops. No CPU utilization, no rendering. Vegas doesn't stop responding. If I try to close it it will ask me if I want to stop the render or something like that, but it is unable to kill the render. Note, making the timeline 3D is enough, you don't actually have to have any 3D compositing on the timeline.

You don't have a class called EntryPoint. Scripting has changed a little with .NET 3.0, check some of the other examples out there.

A Vegas rendering problem... definitely a bug
I do expect it to go faster than 1 frame every 15-20 minutes with 0% CPU utilization, yes. If the CPU utilization was at 50-100% I know Vegas is working, at 0% nothing is happening.

That was part of what I tried, and when I muted the HDV track things moved along at a reasonable clip. It still didn't dawn on me that the compositing mode of the HDV track was the problem (see edit above). It seems that adding HDV to a track with 3D compositing mode will have a tremendous impact on rendering time. This was compounded by the motion design element with an alpha channel that was also color corrected.

PS3 - $399 on Oct 10 - I'm getting one
although if I get one it'll still be at least the 60gig drive. I don't really care that much about the size of the HD in the PS3. As I said, if I want to run anything, I'll run it over the WiFi connection from my PC, or if that proves too slow, wire it up and run it over a 100M ethernet connection. Of course, one day the HD might be a bit small if there is anything I want to do, but I have two USB2 powered 80G HDs lying around the house, used them for my laptop, so adding another 80G or more to the PS3 is not going to be a problem.

64 Bit Vegas How many Render Threads will it use?
So an 8-core computer can execute 8 threads simultaneously. Define "simultaneously". A multi-threaded app can be significantly faster on a single core than the same app if it was single-threaded. Most operations on a computer does involve other things than the CPU. This means delays. Most software that actually does things (other than just math) will never be able to utilize a CPU at 100%. This is where threads come in. Even on a single core threading an application can make more efficient use of that single core. It's not that easy in most cases to write multi-threaded code. This really depends. You can write multi-threaded code easily in many cases, depending on what you are trying to do. Server code is dead easy to multi-thread, such as web applications.

Real-time Preview of effects/transitions needed
And this is EXACTLY the reason why Vegas is going 64 bit (soon i hope!).... more complex transitions and such in real time playback. I wouldn't hold my breath. Yes, 64bit has some effect on some video processing, but you will probably not see enough of an improvement to really notice. 64 bits has some effect on some maths operations, but that is assuming that these operations need a 64bit register to be performed. A huge majority of operations are more than happy enough in the 32 bit space, and these will not be faster under a 64 bit app on a 64 bit OS. The main advantage of 64 bits is going to be a larger memory space, but then again, rendering isn't all that memory intensive. The main advantage here is probably that you can do a bit more RAM pre-view renders if you have 4G or more of memory. Not a huge issue, and it still requires a pre-render. Ulead Media Studio (way back when) had a feature where you could select areas of your timeline and render these to disk, if you didn't change them, they would play off the disk when you were pre-viewing. This would be a nice feature to have in Vegas. You'll probably see a better improvement in rendering speeds by upgrading your disk system to a high-speed system, let's say a modern, hardware-based RAID than upgrading Windows to 64 bits (motherboard RAID is usually so-so). Add your RAID on a SCSI chain, and you'll see an even better performance increase. Again, don't expect 64 bits to do for 32 bits what 32 bits did for 16 bits, it won't. In fact, most people won't notice the difference at all. Very few people work regularly with 64 bit numbers.

OT : Upgrade policy
You pay for the right to use software. You do not have to upgrade. You paid to use V2, and if you wanted to keep doing that you would have been able to. For new versions, which is new software, you are given a reduced price, common in the industry today, and nice. They want to keep you as a customer. Remember though, it probably took a lot more work on part of the software team to get from V2 to V8 than from nothing to V2. They need to feed their families, and they can't do that by giving away most of their software for free. Remember, the biggest customer group is always the old customers. If we don't pay those developers, they won't fix our software.

An idea to save a lot of time for stupid people!
What's so hard about it? If there is a "Cancel" button on the screen, don't be dumb enough to hit it! Why on earth would you want to unless you really want to cancel the render? I agree with people who say that Windows really don't need any more warning windows. At the moment they are a security hazard. You get them so often you hit OK on automatic. Even when you shouldn't. Adding yet another warning to a windows app to assist people who apparently should not operate such advanced machinery (please put your humor pants on) will make Windows and applications less useful and less secure for those of us who actually understand that hitting a button that says "Cancel" is, invariably, going to cancel something. If you are afraid of hitting it by accident when clicking around your windows desktop, just minimize Vegas while rendering. Then you have to maximize Vegas AND hit the Cancel button. If you still manage to cancel a render by accident you should probably consider doing something else for a living/as a hobby.

blink We understand from your repeated rants about Blu Ray that you have been burned (no pun intended) by this. That's OK. Can you imagine that someone would want to start a thread about Blu Ray burning software that doesn't include you ranting about your failures though? Do you really think that any of what you posted has anything to do with the topic of the original poster? Well, there were two words that was relevant, "DVDit pro". I understand that you are ticked off after spending a bit of cash on this, but do you really feel that you have to constantly butt into any thread that is just reasonably close to the topic of Blu Ray and rant about your misfortune? Do you not understand that your behavior is what is called trolling, and that you add nothing at all of value? Do as I did when I ranted about you in another thread, when I realized it was a bad rant, I went in and deleted the post. Show us that you are a man, delete this rant, it is off topic, it is pointless and it is only meant to create noise. Oh, and yes, I will delete this response to your rant when your rant is gone so that we can keep the thread on topic.

Toshiba HD DVD Burners fail to meet their own spec
It sure as heck is relevant! What else has been missed? How can anybody be sure this is not a simple disk incompatibility? Easily, Verbatim makes excellent writable disks, Ritek generally have far more quality problems. C'T tested on the best disks on the market today. If you have any experience with burning anything today you know that Verbatim is going to be more compatible than Ritek. f this report is true, then we may be forced into having to choose the best of 2 disasters, which will not be good for ANY of us. I think this appears to be the concensus right now. The hardware is there in the BD camp, but the software is lacking. In the HD DVD cam the hardware is not there yet, but the software appears to be.

Let's talk about burning BluRay discs.
I have no experience whatsoever, but I did notice that Adobe has announced (but not yet released) Adobe Premiere Elements 4, and on the feature list for this release there is Blu Ray burning, including menus and scene index (according to the literature). Since I use Photoshop Elements (who needs the full version for video, not me) I am going to get the bundle, just to check it out. No fan of Premiere, but looking for a burner and burner software, and the price is unbeatable if it works. I doubt Sony will sit still and watch Adobe take the lead in inexpensive and prosumer authoring for a Sony disk format, so I would expect to see a DVD-Architect on the market in the not too distant future that includes Blu Ray burning. If Sony drops the ball on this someone needs to get a pink slip over there.

Whether C'T had access to the Ritek disks that blink refers to, or the journalist missed that they are available isn't all that relevant. That one issue doesn't remove the fact that the tests done on this recorder doesn't bode well for HD DVD burners of any quality any time in the near future. If ever. C'T is a quality magazine, and the test is quite clearly thorough and in-depth. Most of the relevant testing was in fact not done by C'T at all, but by an independent lab. Verbatim generally makes very high quality media while Ritek generally have significantly more quality problems. If this is the quality you can expect with Verbatim, given the quality difference between the two brands, if you bought Ritek disks you'd probably have the worlds most expensive coaster maker. It seems that any reliable HD DVD burning is at least 18 months in the future, and then you'll probably only see reliable Layer 1 burning. Not something you'd hold your breath for.

Nasty Cineform Issue in VP8
Not to pick nits, but the intermediate is an AVI, and with the appropriate decoder, it should play fine in any media player. But that is nit picking. I am just glad it works in Vegas.

Nasty Cineform Issue in VP8
It doesn't really look like it is an issue. I just tested it, and got some weird results, but nothing that really matters. If I open the cineform intermediate file in Windows Media Player, or any other AVI enabled player on my system, the video flickers like mad, is of the wrong aspect ratio and also is placed wrong on in the player, you know how old TVs some times was, you got 4/5 of the picture on the right side of the screen, a black bar to the left of that, and the remaining 1/5 to the left of the black bar, as if the image was shifted to the right a bit, circled around and comes out on the left side of the screen. As I said, it doesn't seem to be a problem though. If I open the intermediate in Vegas it looks perfectly fine and it also renders to MPEG perfectly fine, and fast. So, it seems it is mainly a player issue, my players are having problems with the intermediate, but the intermediate is exactly that, and not something I am going to distribute, so that is fine. As long as Vegas has no problem with it. I did open the AVI in Ulead Movie Studio, which had the same problems as Windows Media Player, but that is also probably not a huge issue.

Nasty Cineform Issue in VP8
Download the free NEO player and it includes the new CODEC. It replaces the one Vegas uses and due to the Vegas licensing, you can create new files out of Vegas 8 with it. That would have been great, but I downloaded the NEO player, and it doesn't help at all. In fact, it creates a video file that looks a lot worse than before.

Nasty Cineform Issue in VP8
Well, I am not willing to accept this I think. Vegas ships with the Cineform codec, and it works very well in V7, it doesn't however work in V8. Someone screwed up BADLY, and this should be fixed. Now. Why should I have to pay several hundred dollars extra, in addition to the upgrade price, to get the same functionality out of V8 as I have from V7?

ProType titler Forum ??
Pro Titler is developed, as far as I can see, in C#, and from what others have said, it is developed by Sony. Perhaps it is a sign of things to come. Sadly it was rushed a little to the market. Some issues The thing keeps blinking and blinking and blinking and flashing and.... Please stop. The user interface takes a little bit of getting used to, which is OK, it is in areas not at all up to Vegas standards, which is not OK. As someone pointed out, we've had more than one mouse button on the PC since the first mouse came out. It crashes a little too easily, but in non-predictable ways, and with big nasty C# stack traces. That is a little bit on the amateurish side of things. Shouldn't really allow stack traces to show up in the user interface. Catch exceptions and handle them says I. Hey, Sony, there are windows standard key strokes that works EVERYWHERE, well, except in the titler. If I press Ctrl+A, select all my text for goodness sake. Oh, when I click on something on the timeline, like the text, show it please. I shouldn't have to move way out on the timeline just to see what I am editing. Example, drop one of the collections on the timeline. If I am on frame 0 (relative), how can I edit the text? Most systems I have seen, when I select the text, drop in a text box with no effects etc. That makes sense. Again, standards please. If I double click a word, select it. If I triple click a line, select that line. Hey, guys, I use the mouse to move stuff around to APPROXIMATELY where I want them. Then I select them and use the arrow keys to put it EXACTLY where I want them. This is the only tool I have used in years where I can not move a selected object using arrow keys. Some nice things... Well, it's a cool titler. I really like that I can see the font changes in real time on my text as i browse the fonts. It's a cool titler.

USB video capture/no sound
Let me correct this slightly, it is correct that Vegas can not capture DV over USB properly, but it can still work with the captured Type 1 AVIs fine. Vegas 6 could not, but somewhere between 6a and 7, I can't remember exactly where, that was fixed. When my GS400s firewire port died, I used Windows Movie Maker as the capture app and edited in Vegas. It works like a charm. The only disadvantage is that Movie Maker is a rather crappy capture app compared to the Vegas Vid Cap. So, if you don't want/can't get a FireWire card for your PC, capture using Movie Maker and edit with Vegas. Works like a charm.
