slow-mo = stutter
For really good slow motion, you need to use a different program. Some are expensive and some a free. If you are familiar with AVISynth, that does a reasonable slow motion for free. The real pro choice is Twixtor but it's not cheap and only comes a plugins for FX applications. Andrew

From Vegas you would need to use DebugMode the Frameserver to serve to AVISynth, then another app (AVS2AVI or VirtualDub) to save the output of AVISynth. Simplest steps: 1) Install AViSynth, MVTools, VirtualDub and DebugMode Frameserver 2) Create AVS file for slow motion (see below) 2) Serve the video from Vegas using Frameserver e.g. vegas.avi 3) Open the AVS file with VirtualDub and save as AVI. Pre compose or nesting query
To emulate the Precomposition of AE you need to have your Precomp as another project. Hence opening two projects and nesting one inside the other, the nested project being the precomp. Andrew

AutoHotKey should do what you want. http://www.autohotkey.com/ It's a macro program that runs scripts for almost complete control of windows. Look at the Open/OpenWait and Winxxx commands. Andrew

Can't select correct firewire device
Sorry, yes I do mean VidCap and yes I can do the same with preview but I still have to turn off the VCR when previewing DV as there is no selection of which device to send video to. You are supposed to be able to select each device and control it but it doesn't work. Neither does VidCap recognise the device names. I haven't tried it using the through connector, I'll see if that makes any difference. At least someone has the same problem so I think I'll report it to SCS unless anyone has a fix. Thanks Andrew

Importing DVD archived video
I use DVDShrink. If you use it in re-author mode you can create individual clips, rather than having to take the whole disc. Andrew

I wouldn't expect event lengths to change. Otherwise your master project would be changed by changes in nested projects. Andrew

Cropping, resizing and adding a border
Sorry Andy, didn't notice you wanted to crop too. In that case you must use the event pan/crop to crop and track motion to move. You don't have to use different tracks, just set a keyframe at the start of each image to hold I sometimes wish Vegas had both crop and move for events too. Perhaps someone could create a crop FX filter. Andrew Andrew

Vegas' Pan Crop is quite powerful and therefore can be confusing at first. Right click the pan/crop window and select 'match output aspect' then you will be able to resize and move the image anywhere. Andrew

'How do you know that it wasn't done in Vegas' I suppose I don't, but Vegas isn't the first place to go for 3D box shots. In theory it could have been done in Vegas but it would take an awful lot of 3D tracks and a huge amount of time. So I suppose I'm saying: 'I would bet that it wasn't created in Vegas' - if that helps ;-) Andrew

OT: Small rant about Quicktime
The problem is that Macs have native Quicktime just as Windows has native AVI and it can be difficult to get other codecs to work. Most editing software on a Mac (as on a PC, yes even Vegas) use Quicktime libraries and codecs. Quicktime is only a wrapper. Within it you can use lossless codecs like PNG or even uncompressed. I regularly swap files with Mac users using DV or DVCPRO for broadcast and occasionally MP2/4 if it's for them to put straight to DVD. Andrew

Simple fan-in, fan-out transition wanted
I think Sony should add a 'save as transition' option. Then you could apply effects on two clips and Vegas would be able to reuse the effect as a transition. I have mentioned this to Sony but I didn't get any response. Andrew
