Nothing like a big monitor for Vegas!
I have just hooked up my brand new ViewSonic 19" LCD Model VX910. My 5 yr old Dell 17" CRT just dropped dead in front of me a couple of nights ago without any warning. I went back & forth about CRT vs LCD and finally gave in. I picked it because of the 16 ms repsonse time, 500 contrast and DVI input (which I am not using yet since my card is analog-only). Too bad just about all 19" LCDs are native 1280 resolution. I feel like I'm back in the old 640 VGA days (everything looks too huge and I am used to working with tiny). Wonder if I could overdrive it to 1600 (for temporary applications) if I had the right graphics card? I was also concerned because the dot pitch is higher on alll the 19" models than on the 17's (.29 vs. .26), but I can't see any difference. My eyes are probably the weakest component in the equation. Too bad it's almost impossible to test these things out properly in the stores. Looks great, though, and I am sure I'll get used to it. I almost got a Samsung 19" CRT (it was very cheap) and was also considering a 21" ViewSonic CRT. This was my attempt at a reasonable compromise. Cost about $450 after rebates at Best Buy.

Rendering and burning
MPEG2 encoding may not look too good if there is a lot of fast motion and you are using a low bitrate (under 4000). If you try to put 3 hours of fast paced action on one DVD it won't look as good as 3 hours of slow moving video (because the slow movement requires less information to indicate what has chaned between frames). At best quality, even fast action should look acceptable if you have an hour or less of footage.

"Hardware Agnostic" err... then I can run it on a Mac or a 286? :) "Format Agnostic" I'm trying to edit some old 8mm footage... should I place it in the the floppy drive or the cup-holder thingy? :)

OT: Superbowl
American Idol is not a good barometer for measuring what currently passes for talent today (or yesterday) for that matter. There are plenty of lousy singers who were and are extremely successful, but wouldn’t make it on American Idol. And most of the winners of American Idol probably wouldn’t have been heard of if not for the show. What made Paul and the Beatles such a phenomenon went beyond their individual capabilities as “singers” or guitar players. I agree that this was probably the only halftime show that I have ever been able to watch. It went so fast that I thought they were just pausing for another $5 million commercial between songs.

Sorry, but you folks are all sadly misinformed. There has been high definition broadcast since 1936. " In England, the BBC operated a 405-line station located at the Alexandra Palace in northern London. Public programming started on November 2, 1936. The British claim this to be "the world's first regular public high definition television service." Sources: Andrew Emmerson, Old Television (Buckinghamshire, UK: Shire Publications, 1998), 5 (For more info, see This great Website). So, you can see that hi-def has been and will continue to be a moving target. There's no format you can shoot in today that will still look state-of-the-art in 50 years. But it can still look pretty darn good. I see that the debate was very heated on the VideoUniversity site, and now it has become a barnyard brawl here, as well. Personally, I think that for weddings (mosty of the audience there), the technology is a little on the premature/overkill side, at the moment. There's almost no practical way to deliver it yet. You can do very flattering and tasteful work with the 3-chip cams that have been available for the past few years. The actual camera used is only one minor element. I'm sure that if George Benson and I swapped guitars, you'd still be able to tell which one of us were playing. At the risk of making an off-color comparison, I think that even higher def images for most weddings would not make them more enjoyable to watch, but more like some of the cheap porn flicks that border on looking like gynecological examinations. However, I bet that Steven Spielberg would probably have tried to get his hands on an HDV camcorder if he were a 17-year-old today.

I would have to say that the answer is "yes". But just for fun... Is film HD? Is analog HD? Is tape HD? Is a CD hi-fidelity? "Alexander" was well photographed and had great picture quality, too. Still a bomb when watching in 1080i on Hi-def monitor. "Citizen Kane" was shot in black and white and 4:3. Pretty good flick. :)

What is a normal distribution deal?
Are these deals traditionally compensated via cash, check, credit card or Pay Pal? If cash, can it be in small denominations? Can I pay my IP attorney out of my back-end? C'mon, can't you all see that Sol is just trying to get us all to download some lame UFO videos from his Website for $9.99? :)

Scene Detector- Vegas 5
What you're describing is also a feature that is available in the very inexpensive Pinnacle Studio. It can detect scenes during or after capture. Unfortunately, even if you do that, you can't bring this into Vegas from Studio, either. I like the way Studio does scene detection better than the way Vegas does it. WIth Studio, you can have a single .avi capture file, and Studio will create a separate file the keeps track of where each scene begins and ends. In Vegas, it will create separate .avi capture files. Depending on your footage, you could end up with many, many little .avi files, which could become unmanageable. The advantage of this, however, is that you can delete all the scenes you don't want, freeing up storage. So there are some pros and cons to each method.

Vegas in high-end productions?
If you’re just editing home movies or you’re a small production house, obviously, it doesn’t matter what you use as an NLE. However, if you ever want to work as an editor for a large studio or post production house, you will need to know how to use whatever they have standardized on, which is probably NOT Vegas. They may be using FCP, Avid, Premiere or some ultra expensive “pro” product, which is not necessarily “better” or more efficient. They don’t want to support an environment with a hodgepodge of software. Sony doesn’t seem to be making any attempt to position Vegas as an industry standard. As a matter of fact, I can’t even find it when I try to look for it from Sony’s own Website. We all know that the best products are not guaranteed to become the standards for the industry. As history has demonstrated, almost the opposite is usually true. It’s all based on marketing and hype and relationships. The guys making these kinds of decisions are often several layers removed from any hands-on experience using the actual software. The vendor with the best demo and expense account often wins.

OT: Why Apple people are the way they are
I worked for one of the large studios. The creative depts and executives had Macs. Most refused to use a PC to run some critical business applications that they needed to do their jobs. We ended up buying a bunch of expensive Orange Micro cards (an entire PC contained in a card). That way, they could still use their precious Macs to run PC applications by booting the equivalent of a very cheap PC inside thir Macs. At the time (before the Web) there were very few cross-platform development tools. Later, we started using a product called Omnis 7 that was a decent cross-platform development tool. Yes, at one time the Mac was much nicer than the PC, but now, there's just about nothing you can do on a Mac that can't be done faster and cheaper on a PC.... except run FCP, of course!

He was a class act, although I have heard he was a bit of a control freak. Interesting, I haven't heard anything mentioned about Joan Rivers yet. She used to guest host for Johnny quite often, until she got a short-lived show up against him, on Fox, I believe. From that point on, the rumor is that he would not speak to her.

Or you can use an image editing app (Photoshop) to make it the right size and level of transparency first. You should just try either way, render a short section and see what difference there is, if any.

A Couple Questions About HD
Reminds me a lot of when color TV was first becoming popular. We had some Zenith 25" round tube "consolette" model, which at the time was about $550 (about the equivalent of what a decent HDTV setup would go for in today's dollars). My parents would watch any show that was broadcast in color (there weren't many to choose from), including The Flintstones. I remember my dad yelling at me once because I was watching something in black and white on this TV (only set in the house, BTW). He was an electrical engineer, and was more concerned with adjusting the quality of the picture than watching the content. Every channel and every show required some kind of adjustment, and you had to sit on the floor to do it, because there was no remote. For the initial setup/”calibration”, you needed a TV repair guy to come with a device called a color bar generator. Luckily, our set was one of the newer models, with a built-in degausser, so you didn’t need to call a technician whenever you moved the set!

OT OK to splice speaker wire?
This cable review really cracks me up. I have to confess that I am fascinated by the placebo effect that putting a $700 price tag on a set of cables can have on some seemingly intelligent people. I am thinking of marketing a a $500 tank of acoustically balanced compressed air to fill the listening rooms of these well-funded audio snobs who think they can hear the difference between a stereo with a plastic knob and a wooden one. And what is this business about a "break-in period" for these cables?!? The only thing I can come up with is that if you don't experience the huge placebo effect immediately after plunking down the $700+ for these wires, you can rationalize it by trying to convince yourself that they will start sounding better after a few more weeks. By the time the electrons should have trained themselves on the optimal route through the copper atoms, it will probably be too late to ask for a refund. :) I wonder if there is a proper way to break them in? Can you do harm if you play the same music through them too many times and burn music memory into these cables? Maybe I can also market an audio version of a screen saver that plays white noise through them when you are not in the room for more than a couple of minutes...

I’ve never been on of those $20,000 stereo set audiophiles, but when I was younger and more gullible, I did throw out a few bucks on that Discwasher system (overglorified bottle of distilled water and a fancy brush) to clean my LPs with. With the introduction of digital equipment with specs that were impossible to achieve with analog equipment costing hundreds times more, I was recently surprised to see that there is still a market for even more expensive, unbelievable, psychosomatically oriented audiophile items than ever. I'd like to see a audiophile contest where the contestants have to listen for spliced versus unspliced wiring and get it consistently right more than 51% of the time.
