Missing chapter markers
I use the exact same workflow (successfully), except for NTSC instead of PAL. If I remember correctly DVD-A 5.2 had an issue reading the markers from the AVC file. DVD-A 6.0 doesn't have that problem. My work-around trick was: - in the BR template start with the DVD-targeted MPG file (with markers); - then do a file-replace and put the AVC file in its stead... - the markers magically remain in place. Thanks, VideoITguy!!!! It actually turned out to be the other way round: The "Legacy driver" things WAS checked (by default?). Once unchecked everything is working fine! Wd

Peter, thanks for those great ideas, that I could have never come up with myself. (Of course I have! It's a standard help desk response, because it will get people off their back for at least a few days.) You missed one important point: "Windows and EVERY other piece of software on my PC (Win7 x64) recognizes the drive for both reading and writing." It is ONLY DVD-A that has an issue. So, it is NOT the driver, or Windows.

No, no, Windows and EVERY other piece of software on my PC (Win7 x64) recognizes the driver for both reading and writing. And the same drive in my previous PC with the same version of Windows and the same version of DVD-A worked without a problem.

Vegas12 Still unstable after so long..
OK, I think I should add my experience here. I have been using a Xeon-based workstation for over 7 years through several version of Windows with great success. Recently things stopped working reliably with several renders ending in a crash. I did a complete fresh install of Windows7 (thinking the upgrade to Windows 8 was killing me) but it didn't solve my problems. As most of the crashes appeared to happen when the temperature in the system started to go up, I started to distrust the hardware. Maybe thousands of hours of non-stop rendering and resulting temperatures had taken their toll on the CPU, memory or graphics card. I decided to give it a rest and build myself a brand new box: extra good cooling, i7 CPU, full 32 GB of RAM. Not only is the system rendering without any crashes, the renders that used to take about 7 hours (about 70 minutes of 1080p video to either 480p MPEG-2 or 1080p AVC) are now done in 85 minutes (near real time!). I'm happy as a clam. Hindsight: I think it's not just the temperatures but also the systems ROM BIOS that was never made to support Windows 7. Who knows, who cares. Oh, and thanks to the Corsair 550D case I cannot hear my PC when my notebook is running.

Content Browser problem
Well, I'll be d... I've been using Vegas Pro for 6 or 7 years and had never found Device Explorer. Feel like I missed out on a great tool. It did indeed import the entire take as a single file, which renders without any pops. I still think Content Browser is defective and needs to be fixed.

42nd Street is one of the many bait-and-switch photo/video shops based in NY. The advertize prices that are lower than B&H and Amazon, but: - after placing your order, you get an email asking you to call and "verify" your order - during this call, you are asked to buy additional options; those options are extremely overpriced - some of the options offered are the accessories that normally come with the product - if you decline all options, you will typically be told that the item is not in stock, and in can take weeks to arrive (unless you order a bundle with the options, which IS in stock - if you do finally get the item without the options, standard accessories have been removed from the box. When you go to Bizrate, Nextag, etc to read review, don't read the positive reviews. They've clearly been written by 42nd employees. Read the negative reviews to get a good taste of their real way of doing business. Wd

Closed captions for the hearing impaired
Your video has Closed Caption info in it? Like it was recorded from TV? Please make sure you differentiate between Closed Caption and Subtitles. Closed Caption is a technology developed for TV (broadcast) and was also widely supported by VCRs. There are far fewer DVD players that support it, while ALL DVD players support Subtitles, which is a technology developed for DVD. Vegas 10 us the first version that supports Closed Captions. I haven't tried to use it and I don't know if DVD Architect will "capture" it and transfer it to DVD. But again, even if it does, not all players will display it. Wd

Home-burned Blu-Rays can be copied just as easily as home-burned DVDs and CDs. Factory-pressed Blue-Rays can be copied just as easily as factory-pressed DVDs. Wd

Probably not a big issue for people here, but Virtual Clone Drive and Elby Clone Drive messes things up for Adobe Encore. Encore won't start after it has been installed, and uninstalling won't fix this. Wd

Does anybody use a Sony Blu Ray player?
LTH also needs the player to specifically support it. It may need a firmware update, which the vendor may or may not provide. If you're burning Blu-Ray not just for yourself, but also for others (like I do), it's saver to stay away from LTH for now. Wd

Help with conclusion
@Steve: I have to assume you are a good writer, as you constantly bring up the books you have written. But there is value in reading too: this is about Blu-Ray disks, not about DVDs. Having said that: most your observations are true: I'll never be burnt again (no pun) by Memorex discs and I always prepare to image and then burn with ImgBurn (with Verify). @OP: From the story, my guess would be that this is not a compatibility issue but rather a one-time disc issue, or a 1-time burn issue. A verify would have found that (but would still have left you with a coaster). Wd

Yes, that works to, but (in my experience) if you first add as second video track and put the AVC up there as well. Simply remove that second track after you've done the replace on the first track. But... replace the video using the properties panel, track media. I have indeed noticed some text weirdness when starting off with the DVD format and then changing to Blu-Ray. So, for my next project (next week) I will start out with a Blu-Ray project, but initially load the MPEG file, and then do the add track, replace, remove track routine.

2ND HARD DRIVE NEEDED FOR RENDERING?
"Yes, it's better not render to the same hard drive as your program is on. It's hard for it to read and write to the same drive without causing glitches." Misconception: If Vegas is rendering, it isn't also at the same time reading it's program code; Vegas is already in memory and sits there just fine. There will be swapping, so you want the swap drive (typically C, but can be moved) on a different drive. And it is reading the source files, and writing the destination files. Both can be enormous. It speeds things up if they are on different drives. So, a total of 3 drives (not being partitions or logical drives on the same hard drive or array): 1 for swap, 1 for sources, 1 for targets. It doesn't really matter where the program code sits, nor where the project file (VEG) sits.

Still can't get markers to load.
I hit this bug as well. Very weird. Hope we will get a fix in some update soon. For now, I resolved it in the following way (hate to re-create all my markers by hand. I have a need for both DVD and Blu-Ray versions. So, I have rendered both .MPG and .AVC in Vegas. The MPG has perfect markers. So, I start of with the DVD version, complete it and save it as XYZ-DVD.DAR. I then re-save it as XYZ-Blu-Ray.DAR and start the process of changes: change properties, ADD AVC file to the timline (separate new video track). Save Markers. Remove old video track. Load Markers. Voilá. Done.

How to get DVD content into DVD-A
Actually, renaming the .VOB files to .MPG files was the best advice. But there was one piece of advice missing: how to deal with the fact that the files are split into several 1-GB segments. The easiest way around that is to open de CMD window (DOS box), go to the directory that contains the .VOB files and give the following command: copy VTS_01_1.VOB+VTS_01_2.VOB+VTS_01_3.VOB ...[etc] NEWVIDEO.MPG You can actually copy straight from the DVD, if you add a path to your hard drive to the destination file name: copy VTS_01_1.VOB+VTS_01_2.VOB+VTS_01_3.VOB ...[etc] C:\DIRECTORY\NEWVIDEO.MPG

Unwanted default "1: Scene/Chapter" marker
I've struggled with this for a long time too. In my recital DVDs I don't want the start of the entire reel as a scene selection. By adding it automatically I have one too many scenes. If I delete that one from the menu, my item count per page is off on the first scene selection page. I have now finally found the ideal way to deal with this: 1 - work as I would normally do: starting my first marker in Vegas where I need it. 2 - in DVD Architect the point-0 marker is added automatically 3 - I change my own first marker from scene/chapter to chapter only 4 - I generate the scene selection menu - the point-0 scene is there, my own first scene is not 5 - I manually change the first item in the first scene selection menu page to point to the chapter-only marker - even the name changes with that to the correct name
