I would have to agree wholeheartedly with everything already said. I too first 'met' Smartsound via Pinnacle and I too will hold on to my $50!

OT - The Tape Recorder
Reading this thread brought back many memories. For me, they don't go back quite as far or run to as exotic as some. I recall having lots of fun with an unknown model Phillips 4-track (I think that was/is the correct terminology) and large reels of Grundig tape. I think I still have a couple of reels of tape in a box somewhere around home. I also came across my 2 minidisc recorders the other afternoon when I was attempting to clean up my storage area. Cleaning up equals pulling a piece of equipment out, fondly gazing at it, think 'I might use that again some day', putting it back, pulling out the next bit, ... repeat 'n' times :o)

Rendering 1080-50i to MainConcept MPEG2 problems
Thank you to everyone for your replies. I double checked 'Field order' and it matched (Upper first) as well as the 'Interpolate' settings (which I had set to 'None') and all is now well. Again, a huge 'Thank you'! I don't post a question here very often, but when I do I am always helped out - a testament to the knowledge and helpfulness of the Vegas community here!

Hi Peter. "I think you know what you have to do if you are going to do much video editing." That would be the ideal solution but, unfortunately, the current piggy-bank state doesn't allow for that. I was hoping for a somewhat cheaper work-around. ~Wayne

Hi Peter There was no error message generated in the conversion process, nor by Vegas when I placed the unconverted file on the time line. My poor PC just ground to a halt. Basically I am trying to generate a 16:9 SD file that I can add to the timeline so that I can do a multi-cam edit prior to spitting out an mpeg2 file suitable for a DVD. ~Wayne

Hi Peter Yes I did try that when my conversion 'failed', but my poor PC just couldn't cope, which I suspected would be the case - hence the hunt for conversion software. By 'try' I mean that I dragged the files straight onto my timeline and they did appear as both audio and video tracks but, as mentioned, my PC just doesn't have enough grunt. ~Wayne

Vegas 11 is CRASH HAPPY
Just another thought on the stats relating to VP11: I wonder how many users are like me, that is have purchased the upgrade but not yet installed due to nervousness induced by many threads like this one! I must also own up to having purchased the '10' upgrade but sitting on that one too after reading some of the threads relating to issues with that version as well. Memo to self: don't get sucked in by the cheaper upgrade deals in future! ~Wayne

Sony Vegas Pro Survey
'I just received and completed a Sony Vegas Pro Product improvement survey. One of the questions was "What other feature enhancements would you like to see in Sony Vegas Pro?" Here were my four responses: 1) Before anything else is done, make Sony Vegas Pro rock solid (i.e. reduce or eliminate the crashes).' Funny about that, this was my response in all 4 boxes :o) I guess the big question is 'Will it have any impact any time soon?' Also, it would be interesting to have the results published on this forum! ~Wayne

Artifacts in cross-fades in version 9
No FX of any description (sorry, should have read your first post more carefully!) - just a plain vanilla overlap-the-clips to create a cross fade, but seems like it's dud RAM that is the cause :o(

Update: ran Memtest-86 and got lots of red error messages, so it looks like I do indeed have RAM issues!
