Movie Birdman. Cinematography just amazing.
I logged onto this forum for the first time in a while just to agree with you. Fantastic movie. I didn't know much about the movie at first, but the camera work is incredible. Years and years ago, I saw a similar movie called Russian Ark which was filmed in a single Steadicam shot, but it still felt a bit formal and stilted and you noticed it. This movie just feels so alive and, later, when I asked my wife if she noticed how they filmed it, she said what do you mean? I said, there are no cuts. She wasn't even aware of this, because you just fell the energy of the drama of the movie and the acting. Jerry, I first noticed it when they went all the way from the dressing room to the stage. And I just thought to myself, Wow, are they going to do this all the way through? It's was kind of a thrilling moment. I felt something similar in the beginning of No Country for Old Men. It just made me realize how ambitious this movie was going to be and that it was going to be special. The raised the bar a couple of times during the movie too. No Spoilers, but what about that opening shot? That was a grabber. I caught a tribute to Citizen Kane too that they used some digital trickery for, the probably used something similar for the mirror. All the performances were great too. Typing this up makes me want to see it again on a big screen.

As I reread your first post, you use "The Draft Horse Classic," so that probably is the common way to refer to it.

I like the imagery, but agree the audio is a bit jarring. What other sounds do draft horses make? clip clop of the hooves or jingling of the reins/tackle might work. Also to my ears it's disturbing to hear "Draft Horse Classic" with a "The" or "The Annual" or "The Legendary" or some form of the article.

Shot in 4:3 should I render in 16:9?
The important thing to note, is that you are rendering your 4:3 image WITHIN a 16:9 frame, hence the black bars. So do not stretch your 4:3 image to fill a 16:9 frame, you will either distort the image or cut some off it off, depending on you do it.

AE is for motion graphics. You create them, by piling (or compositing) layer upon layer of graphics to build up an animation. Something like this http://www.adobe.com/designcenter/gallery/domanistudios/index.html 15 years ago, you didn't see things like this. Now it's everywhere

This feature in the Advanced version seems cool especially for someone who sometimes fumbles with audio, until a fix is found. Export History as XML Could be useful way to see what you're doing wrong and what you're doing right.

Vegas VS Final Cut
There's tons of threads here on this and most include the phrase a tool is just a tool. What type of work are you doing? What do you deliver to? What do you think you is missing? Ever not been able to take or finish a job, because you were working in Vegas? Folks who prefer Final Cut are usually working with film, not video delivery and folks who have to interact with others in their workflow, i.e one person cuts, one person does audio, one person does the color. Folks who prefer Vegas usually are one man band, setups, you can edit, do audio and color all in the same application. The differences between Vegas and Final Cut Studio tend to be FCS has things that Vegas doesn't do. Vegas doesn't do motion graphics, while FCS has Motion. But does this mean you want Final Cut? Perhaps Vegas plus After Effects is the solution you want. I doubt you'll find editing in Final Cut better than Vegas most likely it will be slower for an experienced Vegas user. One part of the FCS suite that folks who work in Vegas do tend to like is DVD Studio Pro. Most FCP editors do not have much experience with Vegas due to the Mac vs PC issue. If you a freelance editor, you should learn FCP as it's more widely used in the industry.

Baraka on a budget.
The style of Baraka was a product of the luxury of time involved on the shoot and their access to computer assisted camera equipment, that allowed them to do slow, steady repeatable moves. It's one thing to be inspired by the feel of a movie, it's another thing to set yourself up for failure. Again they don't have 70 mm cameras. The resolution of those cameras contributed to the style. You can hold a shot a lot, lot longer before it gets boring, when the resolution allows you to study the frame without it being boring I think Preproduction time, would be better spent on what can actually be accomplished with the available equipment and personnel.

Baraka on a budget.
I believe the makers of Baraka built their own 70 mm camera, because it would be too expensive to rent for the time they needed it. The producer owned a machine shop. That is also a key to Baraka is the amount of time they took to get the images they wanted. That is luxury most of us don't have. I suspect the difference between the DVD of Baraka and the Bluray is an order of magnitude. I saw it on BluRay and the clarity of the images is jawdropping. I have never seen anything more lifelike on a TV. Roger Ebert says it's the best video disk he has even seen. The film was photographed over 14 months by director Ron Fricke, who invented a time-lapse camera system to use for it. In 1992, it was the first film since 1970 to be photographed in Todd-AO, a 65mm system, and in 2008, it seems to have been the last. The restored 2008 Blu-ray is the finest video disc I have ever viewed or ever imagined. It was made from the Todd-AO print, which was digitally restored to a perfection arguably superior to the original film. It is the first 8K resolution video ever made of a 65mm film, on the world's only scanner capable of it. It is comparable to what is perceptible to the human eye, the restorers say. "Baraka" by itself is sufficient reason to acquire a Blu-ray player. The idea of shooting "Baraka-quality" images with HDV cameras is as goofy as saying your movie is going to be as good as Citizen Kane because you are shooting in Black and White.

Importance of foley?
Um, radio did not begin the decline of interest in books. Cinema existed before radio and Theater, both high and low, existed before then. Movie theaters were packing them in decades before stories were broadcast on radio. There's always going to 20-25% of the country that doesn't read at all. Another bunch that reads sparingly and a top level that reads constantly. The importance of Foley is the importance of sound. Foley just gives you more control over it.

OT: Need some critique please
It has a dramatic feel, but the length and repetition start to drain what is good about the clip. What do you want the audience to do? Click on the website? It feels like it's missing a conclusion and that conclusion is probably, in this case, an instruction. "If anyone is thirsty" is weaker than "Is anyone thirsty?", so I don't think that should start the clip. When you start with "If," we are waiting for you to finish that sentence. I think the structure should be A. Is anyone thirsty? B. If anyone is thirsty.... C. then.....( instruction or conclusion or something) I think you might want to work in some shots of people alone and isolated. It could have a powerful juxtaposition with the teaming crowds. I think you are going for a global feel, but by using long shots all the crowds look the same Also I think you mean the rhetoric question, not the redundant question

How is the basic effect done? Do you just make the "book" image about 4 times the project size and pan it around? I was thinking of trying something similiar for an upcoming project, but probably not as expertly done.

Can Vegas be made better with public betas?
Actually, the higher you are up in this profession, the less likely you are to be an svcu or svce, since you wouldn't have a need for the certification. It means you're above a newbie and a novice, but those letters don't make you a whiz or a wizard.

Smaller than Sony? or smaller than Sony Creative Software? Remember the group that makes Vegas is a relatively small software company in Madison, WI that was bought by Sony. My sense is they tend to focus on one release at time. The Studio Products being the latest release.

Vegas and rendering :( fed up. Again.
When all text tracks were muted then it rendered without without generating the error message. If this is the case, then you are well on your way to either finishing the project or isolating the issue (Which you can then send to Vegas tech support.) Now turn on the text tracks and try rendering just those sections and see if that works, If so, you can then finish the project by editing your muted render to the your text sections. Adding each text section as a nested project, might help as well.

What did you do to produce your video? Have you added any color correction or effects? Did you render your footage before placing in on the Timeline. Do you know about working in 16-235 (tv colorspace) vs 0-256 (computer colorspace)?

vegas pro which computer?
You may want to change that to which laptop? If you keep the same hard drive, you probably won't have an issue reinstalling Vegas. You may want to do the install at time when some from SCS's support is available. Even if you run into trouble, it's pretty easy to get a new code from support.
