OT: Blu-Ray too clear?
I have an article somewhere in an old magazine which describes an experiment conducted in 1905 or so. It seems a music store set up a five piece orchestra behind one curtain and a 'new' Edison phonograph behind the other and invited the audience to 'pick the difference'. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Way OT, Recovering DVD recorder hard drive data
Thanks for the reply and johnmeyers email, much apreciated. I dont think the drive is faulty just that the recorder is dead (nil out from the power supply. I think the file format on these drives must be foreign to Windows. I dont know if the same fat and format is used on all these machine types (hard drive/dvd recorders.)

OT: DTV - I had no idea!
Here in Aussieland we have had almost full cover of digital parallel with analogue for three or four years now(even in rural areas). Laurence, you might not have gotten the full picture either since digital delivers up to five separate pictures (or three and one HD) plus at least two audio(radio) streams in the space of an analogue signal. The "low" definition is DVD quality with the HD much better. The best thing about digital though is that in areas where although strong the signals have much ghosting due to terrain etc digital gives near perfect reception!!! Many of my friends who have put up with "guesswork" viewing for years are now enjoying perfection. That said I too am a bit worried about the occasional pixelation and dropouts which occur even in good signal areas. Bad reception (pixels and stuttering sound) are practically unwatchable. My advice from a number of installs is a broad band outside antenna (phased arrays seem best) ans a masthead amp. Brian (100 miles south of Sydney)

OT: Historical computers
Seems all that space being taken up in the workshop is worth about $120, for a minute there I was counting the thousands!!!! List includes, 2 CPM machines (8" drives), a VIC20, 2 TRS80s, 2 Sinclair spectrums with microdrives. Probably the most interesting is a few valve (tube) modules from some early main frame. They seem to be dual flip-flops with two 6SN7 twin triodes. Dimentions about 6"x3"x2". Brian

Boxed version equity
Australian posters havent mentioned GST. When I bought the boxed V4 I was charged GST (fair enough) by customs, but there was an over $100 "handling charge" on top???? Is the situation still the same? Brian

OT: Old programs
I've got two CPM desktops, 8" drives and all. A tandy TRS 500, Sinclair Spectrum, Vic 20, Amiga 1000. For all I know none of them might work but cant bear to think of throwing them out. Would love to give them to a museum but cant find any interest. Then there is the vintage radios, ham gear, black and white TVs, colour TVs, liquid photocopiers old cameras & projectors and any thing else that looked as if it might come in usefull some day. At least I live on a farm and can keep building sheds but a bit scared the local council will notice one day (they show up on Google Earth !!!!!!!!!!!!) The CPM has a disk with 'Spelbinder' word processor, any one remember it? At 70 I guess I'm not going to change but time is running out to do something with it all. LOL Brian

OT - a veiled peek into the future
Nuther one here. Nothing will equal the thrill I got as a twelve year old, sixty odd years ago watching the images show up under the red safelight as I see-sawed my first verichrome film through the developer!!!! I like technology too (:-) Brian

OT: just got a new still camera (Nikon D80)
Anyone using still cams for 35mm slide copy. I get acceptable results in front of my digi 8 which auto focus's to the front of the lens. Just shoot to a sheet of writing paper taped to a window on a bright day. Any SLR lens focus down that far?? Brian

OT - 360 degree camera
I have a framed photo of my mothers childhood home taken by a travelling photographer about 1912 with a rotating camera of some sort. With an aspect ratio of 5 to 1 it seems to show about 150 degrees. So its not new? Cheers, Brian

OT: Calling All Old Timers - Tune Help!
Back on off topic, what about what Stan Freeburg did to many popular songs (Ol Man River, Banana Boat Song, etc). Still cant hear normal version without subing the SF version. I'm seventy so my early radio was valves (Toobs to the USA) and 250 volts running around the open chassis creations. They say that what doesn't kill you makes you stronger (:-) Long live AM. Wish I could stoke up some of my old Ham gear. Working 6 metre skip for the first time is still one of my biggest thrills.

OT: Goodbye Inky?
A good move but we have to be carefull that the manufacturing costs (CFLs say) doesnt cancel any savings. More importantly is to "turn 'em off" the amount of light generated unnecessarily around the world is incredible. I am still fascinated by air travel enough to spend a lot of time looking out the windows on long flights. The first trip to Europe in 1990 flying across south asia and the middle east very little patches of light could be seen, a couple of years ago there was a huge increase in pools of light. I'm old eneough to remember when, in country towns at least, the street lights went off at 12:30 or so. Wouldn't suit the young party goers of today??? Then of course you had better get your girl back home before lights out. Also in the early fifties we (in Australia) had coal and power shortages and at times inspectors could check and prosecute if a family home was using more than two lights at any time. I have sometimes gone aroung the house and turned off 1000 watts of light and unwatched TVs without a single complaint from anyone?? Our Gov has been talking about similar legislation to the US bill. I really started this thread to get comments on the editing etc find the political comments interesting as well. There are those who still say ,Why didnt the US, UK and France etc go into Germany in the early thirties when they saw what was happening? Imagine the hue and cry! On the technical side what about the shots of outdor orators standing back 5 or 6 feet from the mics? Early digital noise and feedback cancelling, or are these studio setups?

Wow!! Well it certainly works. As for the free of course there is the download cost. With me on Aussie two way satelite it would be 15 cents for every 40 seconds. One wonders if bandwidth is going to forever increase to cater for the masses using things like this??? Cheers, Brian

Truly Low-Cost Diffuser for Builder's Light?
In early 50s with no money for condenser lens I used to make frosted glass for photo enlargers by grinding two sheets of glass together with emery powder between. Bought emery at hardware store , not sure if its still available? Brian
