@cbrillow @GidThere is one other long forgotten function in case the broadcaster requires what is know as an .scc caption file. This is a file in the format of Scenarist which use to be the gold standard for DVDs and captioning.<snip> @DMT3 Once again, thank you for another helpful comment. At the moment, I'm still waiting for word from WYES to let me know what they're expecting to see. In any case, this has been an educational conversation. It's always to one's benefit to hang around with people smarter than yourself! 😉

I just wanted to say thanks to all who weighed-in to help me understand that I had imported the .srt file as subtitles rather than closed captioning, and that was the reason for the script writing empty files -- there were no closed captions to output! After making that distinction, I went through a quick check, running the script and exporting DVD Architect .sub file, which I read into my DVD project. It worked perfectly. Ultimately, this isn't exactly what I wanted to do, but a better understanding of how Vegas deals with these entities should help me figure out how to accomplish the original goal.

Hi, new to this Subtitles/ Closed Captions/ SRT but willing to learn, I added an SRT that i got from YT for one of my YT vids, Insert - Insert Subtitles from file - chose the SRT which put the text on the timeline, but the script Export Closed Captioning for YT did nothing, I think this is what @cbrillow is doing, Ah, yes! That’s the step that I couldn’t remember. It’s now clear that what we are doing here is creating subtitles, not closed captioning. If i go to File - Import - Closed Captioning i get this with the text at the top, but it doesn't show it on the preview screen, And that’s exactly what I saw when I did the same thing in a new test. As the helpful poster @DMT3 suggested to me, subtitles and closed captions are distinctly different beasts. Now we have to learn how to deal with these differences! The script works when i do it like this, it produces an SRT like the one I got from YT which then can be Inserted back on to the timeline like separate text events, but how do i make File - Import - Closed Captioning text that is at the top of the timeline show on the preview? I’m not so sure that’s what actually needs to be done, although it sure makes checking and editing easy to do… Tomorrow, I hope to know more…

@cbrillow I just tested and it works. When you imported the SRT file did you actually import as Closed Captions or as Subtitles (totally different things)? I think your question holds the key to my apparent misunderstanding of what is supposed to be happening. Unfortunately, I did the import several days ago, and don’t recall the precise steps taken. (It was a rote exercise done after watching a YouTube tutorial that seemed to be clear enough…) Then, I went out of town with the project on the timeline to do some edits to the text, but stopped working when I was unable to export the edits to a new .srt file. I *thought* that I used the Import function and selected .srt as the file type. But when I just repeated those steps into a new test project, the result was quite different. The first time, a series of generated media text events were added to the project media and were added to the timeline complete with text, and properly aligned to the video. Your question makes me think that these are subtitles, because they are displayed superimposed on the video in the preview window. The markers looked like regular markers that are created when you press M, but they were all created automatically and contained the correct dialog. This time, the import was done very quickly, the markers are of a different color and type and there are no generated media text events in the project media window. The markers are labeled with one of the closed captioning identifier numbers, so I’m guessing that these are the captions. I’m not at my editing machine now, so I can’t check, but it’s clear that this is what needs to be identified, and probably the reason that my attempts at exporting a new .srt failed. Tomorrow, I’ll dig in and get this cleared up. Thanks for your assistance,

Do you still get a 0kb file if you add your own subtitles and then export them, or is it only with imported subs? I haven’t attempted to create any by hand, but have considered doing it to see if it would work that way. Please see my response to the next post, which I think asks a question that will lead to a resolution, one way or another… Thank you, by the way for your continued interest in helping.

Maybe I erred by describing my project in full instead of limiting discussion to what doesn't work. I appreciate that there have been attempts to help, but I don't need alternatives to the way our project has been upscaled, I don't need to subscribe to Vegas 365 to do speech-to-text recognition, I don't need to buy a 3rd party tool or us a free or pay service to create a .SRT file. What I need is for Vegas to execute one of its own built-in scripts. Someone, anyone, please focus on the issue: I HAVE the captions/subtitles on the timeline in Vegas, and everything plays flawlessly. I don't need to create them, regardless of the number of lines or any other criteria. They are there. I have made a number of corrections to the text and I need to WRITE THEM TO A FILE, which Vegas purports to be able to do. Under Tools/Scripting, the following scripts are listed: Export Closed Captioning for DVD Architect Export Closed Captioning for QuickTime Export Closed Captioning Windows Media Player Export Closed Captioning for YouTube Export EDL The problem is this: I select one of the scripts, "Use the Save dialog to specify a file name and folder for your captions file, and then click Save.", I do this and empty file is written. There is no content of any type. It is a zero-byte file. Am I doing something wrong? Am I supposed to have something 'selected' when the script is invoked? Am I not holding my tongue in my mouth correctly? Is this something that's been broken in Vegas for 15 years and nobody every noticed?

WEAR (I'm over in Mobile) was able to take my .srt files from VEGAS and merge them with the mpeg 2 HD .ts files Thanks for your prompt attention and the information you've provided. But you've apparently missed the central point. I'm not able to export a .SRT file from Vegas. It turns up empty, regardless of which script I choose. The sole exception is when I try to export the EDL, which writes the following to a 1k file: TITLE: Closed captioning & subtitle textFCM: NON-DROP FRAME This puzzles me a bit, as HDV's interlaced field order for 1080 is upper field first, but mpeg-2 480i DVD is lower field first, that doesn't seem like an optimal path to take.... There's some secret sauce in here, as my partner-in-crime uses some old-school software and AVIScript to do some preliminary work on the source mpeg-2s and part of Topaz's wizardry involves a very competent deinterlacing. But the bottom line here is, the 1440x1080 HDV I'm working with is 59.94fps progressive, not interlaced, and my down-rez to mpeg-2 for the DVD is also progressive. (and the DVD project is a hybris with both widescreen and 4:3 content)

Same audio file plays differently in 2 different Vegas projects
I greatly appreciate your quick and helpful response. If we were sitting across from one another, I'd explain in detail how this came about, but neither of us has the time for me to do it in this format! The short version is, rendering to a new track or file for use in Vegas would resolve the playback issue once-and-for-all, but it isn't necessary to do that to work with it in RX9. Here's what really happened: 1) To turn 'tessicle' into 'stethoscope', I simply copied the first iteration of stethoscope and chopped it up into syllables and squeezed them together on a second audio track in Vegas. It lived this way for quite a while, but I eventually moved that single word from the second track to a hole created over 'tessicle' in the original track. That allowed me to get rid of the second track, entirely, and plays back and renders to AC3 without having to make sure that I have two tracks selected. (because there's only one!) 2) I agree that opening an event in the external audio editor ignores FX that are on the Vegas timeline. But it's not necessary to render to a file to open it in RX9, then save and import the result in Vegas, as you have suggested, at least for the way I'm using it. I'm working on each episode with the video and audio tracks on the Vegas timeline, and open the audio as-mentioned in RX. Then I can make a tweak or many tweaks in RX9 and send them back to Vegas to see/hear the result simply by hitting 'Save' in RX, before going back to Vegas, which recognizes that the file has been overwritten and updates when focus is returned to it. It's important to remember that there's only one file open in both Vegas and RX, even if the Vegas timeline has it broken in several places, like I did with this word 'fix'. The original file thus retains its original mispronunciation, but has all the audial improvements performed in RX. Bottom line, I now fully understand what happened and thank you for your suggestion, and helping me put the pieces together!

Video card
Since I upgraded to Vegas 19 Pro (build 458) my gpu processing must be turned off because it does not work ( Gigabyte GEFORCE GTX 1050Ti). Under 18 it worked fine. Other application does use it without any problem. What has changed in Vegas 19 to cause this problem? The video card has the best driver installed (the computer informs me) I realize that this has been resolved by replacing the 1050 with a 1650, but thought I'd comment that the "computer" may be giving false information, depending upon where it's figuring this out. I've seen some driver update utilities that seem to automatically select the 'Game ready' driver rather than the Studio Driver, which is more suitable for the GTX 1050ti to work with GPU acceleration and AI applications.

Preview window settings effect on rendered video files...
The quality setting at the top of the preview Window won't affect the quality or speed of the render... however... the quality setting in Project Settings (or an override in the render template) will affect both the render quality and speed of the render. It will also affect the quality you see in the preview window during the render. If you set "Full Resolution Rendering Quality" to Best in project settings you'll see the preview window change to Best during the render. Letting the preview window do that during the render could slow things down a tiny bit too but I don't notice much difference if I close or hide the preview window while rendering so I leave it alone and enjoy the show. Thanks -- yet more confirmation, with the additional information about the preview window having its settings changed during rendering, according to parameters specified in the two places where it 'really counts'!

With regard to Preview settings, the tail doesn't wag the dog. WRT the Project Window, settings below the horizontal rule do change the output. Nice to see you again -- I certainly recognize your ID from the old forums... And thanks for further confirming what made sense to me -- the preview window setting affect the preview window during preview operations. The Project and render template settings are the main determinants of render quality.

Be wary of some YouTube videos. Yeah, YouTube is full of good, and bad, information. Figuring out the difference between them isn't always easy. So in short there is no relationship between the quality of your preview window and your render quality. That's the way it makes sense to me, too, and I appreciate your taking time to weigh-in with an opinion!

That is what I would expect. I assume you are using multiple instances in order for different types of chapter access. As long as all the sources are identical, it should only use the source once, the rest are pointers that you can use for different navigation, playlists, etc. enjoy. I'll just tweak your comment a little, changing the word "sources" to "instances" for clarity, and then I'll tag this as the solution. To be technical, there is a difference between the instances. I've renamed them with names like 'ATM Pt 1', Experiment Seg 2' etc. This helps me weave together chapters from two different video sources together in a playlist that makes it appear that there are 3 distinct programs - A, B & C - when in fact there are only two, A & B. C is created by the playlist. To summarize: The instances have identical content -- a video file and two tracks of audio, but the instance names are different. DVDA is smart enough to know to use the content only once on the disc. Although it's no longer sold or supported, it's a great tool with loads of features and versatility.

You only need one iteration if your needs are two audio tracks. I belive you can have up to nine audio tracks per video track. Ah, but my original post states: "I was using the same technique that was successful in my playlist example -- importing the mpeg file multiple times into the root of the project, which allows it to be referenced in different ways in the project, yet only being written to the disk one time." In fact, the mpeg file for this portion of my project appears 7 times in the project root and once in a menu. (so far!) I have discovered the following: If a second audio track is added to an mpg2/AC3 media pair that is used a single time in a project, everything seems to behave as-expected. If there are multiple instances of the mpeg2/AC3 media pair in the project, the DVDA disc size calculation is increased by approximately the size of the mpg2 file immediately upon adding a second audio track to any one of the instances - definitely unwanted behavior! (And, by the way, before you'd suggested it, I did create an iso file that confirmed that this was real. It wasn't a calculation error by DVDA...) Adding the same 2nd audio track to ALL of the instances of the original media for this title in the project root, results in the disk size estimate returning to what would be expected. Hurray! Now all I need to do is decide upon which way I want to enable the alternate 'commentary' track... Thanks so much for your interest and suggestions. It's nice to be able to bounce ideas back and forth rather than having to try to figure out everything by myself...

You said you are replacing the audio, thus creating a different file. I am saying that you ADD the audio to the existing timeline so you have two audio tracks.The change in size should only be the new audio track. DVDA is notorious for reporting incorrect size. Do a test build to file and see what size it ends up being. As I mentioned last night, it's semantics. I was doing exactly what you suggested -- adding a second audio track to accompany the existing media. When you use the Add Audio Track function that you mentioned, it shows up as an empty track on the timeline, and the audio for the new track is listed as None in Media Properties, Track Media. There are only Replace and Remove options in the drop-down. In this case, Replace is 'replacing' none with the file that is selected for the 2nd track. That's why I used the term. The existing audio remains in the first track. I've made significant progress this morning. Read on, if you please...

I'm able to do it the way you suggested using a single iteration of the mpg2 file in a simple menu example. I'd tried to do that before in my original project, where the mpeg file was specified approximately 12 times, and adding the 2nd track to one of them resulted in the size projection error. This is promising, but I'm not jumping up and down yet... I'll continue in the morning and see if something else gets in the way in a more complex project, where there's more than on iteration of the mpg2 file. Thanks again...

Thanks, Doug. I've already tried it that way, too. As soon as I add the 2nd audio track and specify the file to use, the disc size projection doubles, as I've indicated in my post. It goes from 1.1GB to 2.1GB. It would seem that the size should increase by approximately the size of the new audio file, but it increases by the size of the MPG2 file. You run out of disk space very quickly with this behavior!

Image Sequence Aspect Ratio
Thanks to everyone who contributed comments or suggestions. I'm pleased to report that I stumbled across the right combination of things to do to things work out. The first part was getting the image sequence written out correctly. Then I had to bring the individual image files back onto the timeline. Of course, Vegas once again assumed that the PAR should be 1.3333 when they were imported. Fortunately, I was able to select all 586 files in the media bin and change it to 1.0 or square pixels, all with a single click. Seemed to work out well! Here's a sample of what I was working on, if anyone's interested.

Sharp as ever, I see! Thanks for posting a possible solution for this really strange behavior. What a nice thing to say! Of course, it shouldn't be assumed that I was ever that sharp to begin with. But it's comforting to know that I don't come across as being any dumber, either.... 😉 I'm just a flickering CFL compared to some of the bright halogen bulbs like you, who populate this forum!

Tried various combinations of that, including the ever-popular 'Set project properties to first media imported to timeline'. When I do that, it detects as 1440 x 1080, 1.3333 PAR, and the preview window shows a stretched image. If I set the PAR to 1.0/square in Properties -- the image in the preview window appears correct. I say 'appears correct', because it changes a 4:3 image. But it appears letterboxed because the preview window still looks like 16:9. STOP THE PRESSES! I just wrote out a few frames as an image sequence after unchecking the Project Properties box that says: Adjust source media to better match project or render settings. This produced an image file that correctly is identified as 1440 x 1080, rather than 1920 x 1080. Guess I'll try to import those back into Vegas and see what happens. Sheesh!

Thank you, John, for your quick response to my question. I've gone down the rabbit hole to the thread you referenced, and am trying to relate the information to my situation. Gotta admit that I'm not fully comprehending all the branches in that thread, but several of the suggestions and explanations are within my grasp, especially the references to Vegas' incorrect assumption that 1440 x 1080 files must have a 1.3333 PAR. And most of the posts in that thread are referring to what Vegas is sensing upon import of stills. In my case, I'm importing an avi file, which Vegas thinks is 1.3333, and stretches it in the preview window. I change the PAR to 1 (square) in Properties pane, and the preview image shrinks to the proper aspect ratio. But I need the image sequence files for cleanup, and, no matter what I do, Vegas writes a 1920 x 1080 jpeg or tiff, which translates into a windowboxed image. Arrrgh...
