Explorer window is blank in Vegas Pro 13
Hi Allegretto, Thanks for your help. I had already tried the FileExplorer.settings file (although I hadn't moved any folders) but have now tried all of the other things as well (antivirus, resetting preferences). I've been playing around with Premiere Pro this week. I have a project that I started in Vegas a while ago but had set aside, but once I finish that I think I'll be making the jump to PP for good. The lack of the explorer panel in Vegas is making everything difficult but I guess it's just the straw that broke the camel's back, as it's the constant crashes that have worn me down.

Thanks for the heads up on dragging files from MM to other programs. I hadn't tried that. I was playing around with the key-framing features of Adobe Bridge today and dragging files from there into PP to see if it worked. The only disappointing thing is that searching by keyword requires manually typing in the keywords rather than just ticking boxes to narrow the search. Regarding the explorer window, there is no pulldown at the top right. It really is a blank space. I've tried moving it around and docking it everywhere (and trying it not docked), I've double and triple checked that there isn't an edge somewhere that can be slid over. BTW, I wouldn't say my experience with Vegas has been 'without mishap'. I've just come to accept constant crashes and make a point of saving after every step so that I don't lose anything. The two things that have been keeping me loyal have been: 1. I am familiar with the program and can work with it quickly using keyboard shortcuts. That, however, I can learn with a new program 2. I have thousands of clips filed and keyworded using media manager. If there are other programs out there that serve a similar function (I haven't looked), that might be enough for me to jump ship.

It is possible that it is Windows 10 related but I would have expected more posts like this if that were the case? I hadn't thought to check the Microsoft forums and will give that a try. Thanks.

Nothing has changed in regards to my permissions or administrative rights between it working and not working. At least, not of which I am aware.

no folders or files in explorer tab vegas 12
Was this problem ever sorted? I am currently experiencing it in Vegas 13 and can't seem to find a solution, anywhere.

Unfortunately that doesn't allow me to preview the clips and add them to the trimmer. I wonder if this is a Windows 10 compatibility issue?

Update: I've uninstalled it a second time, removed all traces of Vegas from my appdata folder, reinstalled. No change. I've uninstalled a third time and replaced it with an earlier version. No change. I've searched online and have found a couple of other posts (one on Creative Cow) from people with the same issue, but no solutions.

Favorite Plug-ins
At the risk of reviving an old thread only to derail it, regarding the painful reactivation of FBmn's WhiteBalance plugin, any idea on how to overcome the issue? I've recently moved to win8.1 and now find the plugin is no longer functional. I've tried activating it several times using my serial number and licence key, to no avail, and am not getting any replies from my emails to the company. I am editing a video I started a fair while ago which has multiple events using the plug in (now all showing up as blank events unless I turn the plugin off) and I don't really feel like having to manually colour balance all of the clips from scratch.

"I have both AE and Vegas and prefer to edit in Vegas" That's to be expected, as Vegas is an editing program, whereas AE is designed to be a compositing/motion graphics program, rather than NLE. It's clumsy as an editor, but as a compositor it is outstanding. If you were looking at Twixtor Pro, I'd absolutely recommend using it in AE because you'll be able to use the splines and rotoscoping tools within AE to really tweak your project. I haven't tried the Twixtor 'regular flavour' demo for Vegas, but have tried the Twixtor Pro demo for AE and if I were to get one of the two, I'd opt for the latter in an instant. If you're not going to go in for the tweaking available in the 'pro' version, have you tried AE's inbuilt time-mapping features? I think the filter is called 'timewarp'. What you may want to do is download a demo for Twixtor 'regular' and try it out with a sample of the sort of footage for which you intend to use it, for the footage will make all of the difference in the world in determining which program will suit your needs. If you haven't tried any slow-mo programs, you may be wondering why I keep referring to the availability of splines and rotoscoping as being important. If your footage is of a single person/object against a plain background (a skateboarder getting air against a clear blue sky, for example), even the most basic of time-mapping programs should be able to do a decent job. If your footage is of a group of people or objects against a busy background, you'll need to instruct the time-mapping program which bits are foreground and meant to be moving in slow motion and which bits are stationary background and to do that you'll need to rotoscope bits and define edges with splines and points. Otherwise the time-mapping program will confuse foreground with background and you'll get odd distortions and morphing.

Oh, my apologies, I wasn't aware that BCC also had a filter called Optical Flow. I had assumed there was just the Apple one. I can't comment on how it compares to Twixtor. For what it's worth, if you don't already own AE it's a brilliant program for a thousand different reasons aside from slow motion.

Unless I'm mistaken, Optical Flow is an Apple product, so if the answer to 1. is optical flow, the answer to 2. is FCP If the answer to to 1. is Twixtor, the answer to 2. is AE, for Vegas doesn't have the same capacity as AE for splines etc to really use Twixtor to full effectiveness.

64 bit Vegas still a crasher
Vegas 10 has crashed for me consistently if I open up an effects dialogue box for a clip and turn effects on and off to see which ones I'd like to retain. Often it will wait until I try to close the effects window before freezing and crashing. I've developed the habit of saving projects at least once a minute while I work and especially if I am about to click on an event's effects button.

I can cope with software that requires internet connection to authorise when first installed, but I have huge issues with software that requires one to be connected to the internet to work at all.

Media Manager improvement ideas
Thanks, TeeTime and Grazie! Just tried it and it works. The only disappointing thing is watching the search process and noticing that, even though all of the files I am searching for are in the very same folder, the search engine starts the search for each individual file from scratch - i.e. goes to the root drive and sequentially goes through all of the folders until it finds the correct folder and file, then starts all over again for the next file. It definitely saves me a lot of effort in not having to start the search for each file manually, but could save a lot of time if it had the same capabilities as the offline file search performed when one opens a project. edit: Just had a "d'oh" moment after posting this. If I direct the smartsearch to the folder it finds them all very quickly. Nick, I agree, being able to either rename files or instruct MM to search for a different name (but same sequence code) would be fantastic.

Media Manager improvement ideas
I'd be happy with two improvements: 1. (As many have already mentioned) - right click to add media to Trimmer 2. (As Nick has mentioned) - improved missing/offline file resolver. The technology to do this is already built into Vegas itself, for when opening a project and searching for offline files (for example, if the original project media have been moved into another folder), it will recognise that there are other files in the same folder that belong to the same project and offer to bring them back online at the same time. In MM the search has to be done over and over again, one file at a time.

Media Manager Substitute?
Thanks very much for that insight, Nick! It's always interesting to see how other people sort out their animal-related media and I figured you'd have a huge library. I started off with a tape based system, so all of my files were named by tape and in the folders for that particular tape (just in case I had to recapture the tape, for some reason), and all of my cataloging was done in MM. Then I went through a period of not being able to access MM (I eventually got it to work again by uninstalling/reinstalling all of my Sony products), but that loss, and a change to a non-tape-based system caused me to change my cataloging style. Now I tend to sort my files physically (in a structured hierarchy of folders) as well as in MM. My main hierarchy is taxonomy based and many layers deep (starting with vertebrate/invertebrate and all of the layers down), probably because for most of the animals I shoot locale is less important than what it is - i.e. I'm more inclined to put together videos of a particular species or group of animals than of a specific trip.

This is a bit OT, but one of these days I'd like to hear how you organise your files, Nick. I suspect your library has parallels with mine (i.e. mostly animal based), so do you file things taxonomically, by trip/location or by habitat?

Adobe Lightroom 3 and DSLR video?
There's your answer right there. Lightroom isn't a compositor. All of the adjustments are done to a single layer.
