thanks all. johnmeyre--I will try those things. the thing about it is--the complexity in my projects hasn't changed that much. in fact-the project that reacently took the longest (6hrs) was super stripped dwn. yes I have over 2GH

portable dvd vs. laptop
thanks for the feedback. I was all settled on the laptop til Jessariah chimed in, :-). gonna sit on this one for a bit . . . really do like the idea of the larger screen, that alone may sway me, if I can find one on the cheap. thanks again dara

new comp advice

thanks for all the info. as I imagined, there were some good arguments for building my own. I might go the local comp dealer route which sounds like a good compromise. I'm not sure how much I'm gonna spend. just from looking at the retail prices for extra bells and whistles (several front usb, zip, firewire, speed, expansion, memory . . .) looks in the 3000 range. is that a crazy amount (including monitor)? thanks everyone D

thanks for the input. I'm suspicious it has something to do w/ my master/slave drive thang I got goin on. tried it on nother comp and it wked just fine. will keep plugging away, persistence seems to pay off w/ comps. D

I did phases 1 and 2, but 3 is where I'm stuck. get to select burn parameters and all it will let me do is click the back button. no other choices are possible. what's the dealio? dara

Rendering problems
just wanted to add to the number of people having render error messages for mpeg render!! very frustrating. love some of vv4 new features, but they're pretty worthless if I can't render the darn thing.hurry the heck up w/ that update sofo!!!

I had the same prob as Cooldraft--illegal length. I went to file, then open, but still got the same message. what am I doing wrong? D

Help - Projects won't render
came across similar prob. cldn't get audio off cd drive w/ vv. saw a posting that said to unplug smartcard reader (usb). everything wks now, no prob. weird. D
