CDarch 5.0 and Vegas Video 3.0 issue

But many users of CDA don't use Vegas and so a stand alone app is what they are wanting. I can't imagine SoFo not continuing in that direction. Personally I prefer separate apps that interface well (like SoFo's) because it seems pretty clear that the "all in one" app approach would take away from SoFo's wonderfully intuitive UI and most likely degrade stability as well. Of course this issue has made the rounds many times here so I'll let it go at that. ;-) drbam

My 113th AES review

I was actually responding with a bit of humor (notice I used a ;-) in my post to try and make that clear). But since you are asking for advice, I would encourage you to just ignore those who attack you. The more you (and others) engage the attack/defense dialog, the more absurd it gets and it ALWAYS ends up in the same place: with a bunch of frustrated forum users and wasted time by some people who could really be helping each other rather than . . . well the same old crap. It reminds me of a useful definition of insanity: "doing the same thing over and over again, expecting different results." With this said, I will repeat that I'm grateful for the help I've received from you and many others on the list. Otherwise I wouldn't bother putting up with this stuff. drbam

Unfortunately, the problem is that some of these threads indicate such a severe degree of psychopathology that in addition to anitpsychotic medication, some form of residential treatment would probably be required as well. ;-) drbam

<<why dont you hold douchebag to the same standards guys?>> The problem I have with Audioman and Angelic (could they be one and the same?) is that neither have offered even one single bit of information related to audio (frankly at this point I doubt that they (he) is capable of it). In spite of all the slamming and backbiting, you and Red and JoeD, and others who get into these irritating frays have also offered some very useful posts at times and I personally have learned something from every one of you. Nobody can say the same for Audioman and Angelic and until they do, I hope everyone here does whatever is possible to run them off. If they don't put up or shut up, hopefully SoFo will just pull their posts pretty soon and we can get back to making music and helping one another. Peace, drbam

Print a copy of your post (the one which the above quote came from). 2. Take the hard copy of your post and go to a fairly good size mirror. 3. Look in the mirror and read your post aloud at least 3 times, making sure to keep eye contact (you will probably find this difficult but keep trying, you can do it). 4. Do everyone a favor and try very hard to refrain from posting on these forums unless you have something useful to offer related to AUDIO. 5. If you find 1 thru 4 too difficult, go find a good therapist and try to get a life! drbam

group envelope/fade out/in
You could do a stereo submix (render) of your drum and bass tracks and then only have to create the envelope fades on the 2 stereo tracks. Not being able to automate busses is indeed a big shortcoming in Vegas and hopefully this feature will be added in ver 4. drbam

Track FX or Assignable FX
Also, assignable FX can be automated (via envelopes like volume and pan) and several tracks can be assigned to the same FX (like a verb) thereby limiting CPU drain. drbam

How NOT to spend a week in Vegas...
Here's a tip from a recording drummer (me). With drummers who haven't had a lot of studio experience, try convincing them to experiment with eliminating all of their cymbals except the hi-hat and perhaps one small/medium crash. This forces the drummer to approach his kit differently and the results can be really creative and exciting. Obviously this opens up all kinds of mic placement possibilities and the sound of drum tracks can be incredible, especially if you're looking for an big, open sound. drbam

Vegas Audio,would you buy it again or another software?
I would, and will purchase Vegas again. The consensus from most Vegas users is that it is the easist, most intuitive and most powerful (in terms of its editing features). But if you are needing to work with midi sequencing *right now* then Vegas isn't the app for you. The next version probably will have some midi capabilities but that isn't confirmed yet. For many reasons VV3 is much better for me than VA 2 was. drbam

If I could find a DSP verb that actually DOES sound as good as the Lexicon PCM 80/90 series I'd pay up to $1k for it. Of course I'd prefer that it be half that price! drbam

Echo Gina
I've been using Echo Laylas for 3 years, the original 20 bit, and for the past few months the Layla 24. I've been completely satisfied with both the product and the terrific support Echo has shown. I had a problem with one of the original units (one of the first 300 made) and Echo swapped me for a new one in 2 days. I haven't tried any other card/interface so I don't have anything to compare the Laylas to. I'm glad you posted your experience with the Gina cause it makes me even more glad I chose Echo. ;-) drbam

Although its probably unrealistic, I would like to see the name "Vegas" completely eliminated. For me, (as with most folks who've visited or lived there) it evokes the archetype of "all show and glitz - but little (if any) substance." Most of it is just a plastic facade. With that said, I would obviously prefer something that underscores Vegas' audio power. A compromise might be "Vegas Multimedia" or something similar. drbam

And I don't think this perspective (reality) should try to discount the other side of this discussion, because frankly it can't. Both pespectives are valid in my opinion. For example, why would the most popular, most expensive, very much in demand studios, who offer every conceivable piece of high end gear, award winning engineers, also find it important (necessary) to advertise what equipment they use? Obviously clients trust these top level studios and the engineers to produce a great product for them. . . AND . . . the clients also want to know what equipment they will be using to do it. And its not just out of curiosity. Its all part of the psychological dynamic involved in any form of sales, marketing and purchasing and this dynamic is ALWAYS in process. Its simply naive ignore this. I will continue to use Vegas because I love the way it works and they've given me great support. . . period. And I personally think that SOFO made a huge blunder with the name and the marketing which ultimately has compromised Vegas (and perhaps SOFO in general) in the audio market. Like others I feel disappointed in that. Oh well. . . drbam

Vegas keeps hiding my files!
Go to Properties> Audio> and see where Vegas is storing the files. Select Browse to find and select the folder you want them in. Click Apply. To be safe, I regularly do a "save as" to the same project name to make sure I've got all the files where I want them (make sure to select "copy all media" when you do this). Then its safe to delete any dublicate files or copies of the session that you no longer need. drbam

vegas 4
<<Whenever I mix on a console from vegas I run into a BIG problem: In order to send each track out it must be panned hard left for odda and hard right for evens. Once I do that, if I DO want to use internal dx fx, the send ONLY goes to that side of the effect, and ruins it for a lot of things. Also if I use an effect on a buss that Im using for an output, whatever is on the OTHER side of that buss ALSO effects that effect, so I gotta not use it>> Yes I agree! Since I use an outboard mixer (and will continue to do so for the forseeable future because I love the outboard gear), this issue is definitely my #1 complaint with Vegas. Any other criticisms or annoyances are extremely minor compared to this! Hope SOFO is listening. ;-) drbam

Plugin delay on last word on vocal track
<<Of course, you add the effect to the mixer window, not the track in this case..>> Yes, just add the delay plug as an assignable effect and insert an efx envelope on your vocal track. Draw the envelope where and how you want the delay to happen. drbam

Help! Vegas crash . . . again!
I deleted some unused tracks and the Waves plugin, *saved as* to a new session and all seems ok so far. Have been doing some editing and running it fairly hard with no further crashing. In hindsight I suppose I should have deleted the files one at a time because I'm not sure now what was causing the problem. I just wanted to get on with mixing this thing! ;-) Anyway, I've been using the Waves plugs on several other sessions (songs) in this project with no problems but I've heard that they can cause conflicts with no particular pattern. I know this was true of the pre- 3.5 versions. Anyone else experiencing any problems with 3.5? Thanks, drbam

Help! Vegas crash . . . again!

I'm using Waves 3.5 with the latest Pace drivers so I don't think Waves are the issue. I will also follow Dave's suggestions (from August) about saving as another session, deleting/muting certain files, etc. The last time this happened (if this is the same problem) I could only speculate that there was some corruption somewhere within the project. I never was able to determine what or where it was and neither could Dave. If I started playing the session somewhere in the middle for a few seconds and did this 2 or 3 times, then the session would generally (not everytime) play all the way through without crashing and I finally got the mix I needed. Definitely a real pain!!!!! I'll post updates as I have them. Thanks for your support! drbam
