Running 8.0c and 12 here. 8c just goes and goes and goes. Love the workhorse 90 hour renders it has successfully given me in the past. Guess I need to image my main drive and run in a VM when needed. Anyone do this? And BTW, yes I will upgrade to 14, finally.

Vegas & VFW Future- The Elephant In The Room?
I thought part of the "pain" of moving from v8.1 to ~V11 was conversion from VFW to more modern architecture? I didn't think VFW was ever ported to 64bit?

NAB 2016 - No Sony Creative Software Showing???
At least let licensed users download final versions of products that do not have to connect to any web server to validate. I still run v8.0c and v12, 8 just chugs along on 4 day renders still. 12 is quirky with scripts/rendering. I'm hoping Catalyst is ready for prime time and is formidable by the next NAB. If not, then I guess we will know who accurately predicted the outcome in this thread.

Quicktime security and flaws...
I haven't submitted videos for iStock/Getty for a while, I need to see what other formats they accept. Use to be only MOV. Digging through the articles to the source, it seemed to be the standard "xxx company isn't updating software yyyy anymore, so it's dangerous and you need to abandon it"-type of useless warning.

OT: Removing DNSUnlocker
I run standard Avast antivirus. I mainly use Chrome, with the AdBlockPlus and Ghostery plugins. They halt most all of the pathways these types of hacks use. I rarely have problems with surfing.

Rending issues in Vegas Pro 8
I had a render that went for 4 days once. So it wouldn't reach the 1% render until after an hour. Try to render the first 1% to give you an idea if you really have a problem or not. You can watch the frame count while the render is occurring, so that should be changing during the render.

Suggestion for VHS alternative
Have them bring in their thumb drive. All schools in our area require the students to have a thumb drive. Find some quick render method and copy to their hard drives?

OT: Hard Drive Problem
I've had the worst problems with SATA cables. Here in lightning alley, we just had a storm/power outage last night, and my main backup server started throwing controller errors on the C: drive. Happens at least once a year around here on at least one drive. Found a new, unused SATA cable and bingo, let me repair it, triple checked everything, and no more errors. I'm going to buy a bunch of the best (for the price) SATA cables and make it a point to replace all of them every year. Any recommendations appreciated. So I would check windows event logs, SMART utility checks, and replace the cable with a brand new one before replacing the drive.

Pretty sure it applies to the "manufacturer" of the physical disc, who you send the sample/data to for replication. And Sony, for providing us with the tool to make the format. Not us as content producers. I ain't a lawyer, so your mileage may vary, yada yada yada...

I was going to continue with the CreateSpace route for nature videos, but a competitor spilled his beans and said that he makes more money off of monetizing his Youtube channel and is ditching BD/DVD. It depends on what you are offering?

OT:NAS
I backup our network machines to a standalone server with three 2TB drives daily. Those then get copied to three 2TB external USB drives daily. Check the quality/accuracy weekly. Almost lost both copies of 15yrs worth of data when one internal and it's USB backup bit it at the same time. That's where RAID would have come in handy. Ideally need an extra set of USB for weekly offsite storage.

Been running 8.0c for years on my quad i5 16GB memory 64bit machine, next to Vegas 12. 8c is rock solid, 12 not so much, kind of quirky.

Go to the Video tab and watch the "smoke" demo. Incredible. Based on his bachelor thesis, which I skimmed. I was very, very impressed, and made sure I grabbed it for when I needed something like it. Open Source. Uses ffmpeg I think I tried it, and it outputs still frames, which you can import into Vegas extremely easily.

OT: 8K video on YouTube
33MB download and 7 upload. The video was gorgeous, but something wouldn't let me play it, crappy video card, probably. I had lots of video buffered, but it paused every 8-10 seconds. 4K played perfectly, though.

OT: Eyeglasses for Editing
I had special "reading" glasses made, for my monitor station distances. Talk to your doctor, they can find the right script for you based on your workstation measurements. Measure distances before you go there!

no Vegas Pro 14 :(
So the same people who brought us Vegas Pro are presumably working on the next best thing. I'm all for it. The most important thing to understand is "workflow" and incorporate that into the product. Going out and buying V13 is great, but it won't influence product development. Those decisions have already been made. I have V8 32bit installed and V12. V8 does some things I'm more familiar with and can do quicker than V12. Starting from scratch is a good thing. I can't imagine Sony Creative abandoning video editing. What, are they closing down and retiring? I would think that's a stupid decision. And a clean product start opens up a lot more possibilities/headroom for the future. I will wait patiently for the future they have envisioned.

So who uses Catalyst here? Ha, I barely know about it! Is it any good? Technically, they were bound for years by VFW reliance, and got behind the curve. I need to study what Catalyst is/does.

Rendering 3 hour project with HD content - V10
I've had 40hr and 80hr renders on an old box. Open up the case, blow all the dust out. Reboot right before you start the render. Then don't do anything else on the machine until it ends.

OT: Google Chrome
I was a faithful Firefox user several years ago until they had those months where they broke it and couldn't fix it for months. Terrible performance, corrupted whole machines. I switched to Chrome. I've never had a bad update, and it is much more powerful than any other browser I've used. Every morning, I open up 3 Chrome windows, and with one click in each, about 180 tabbed websites open up (about 60 in each) for my daily reading. All sites open up in about 10 seconds. I can't imagine using this technique in IE, and Firefox didn't like > 15 tabs, super slow. I use Firefox for a few extensions that are good, and IE for those sites that only work fully under that browser.
