Advice needed: 4k video event projection using a lot of 1080 content
I need to check this but I know that the screens are made 3:1. I found this too extreme for my taste and opted to go with UW4K 3840x1600 (not 1640 as I said earlier). We would put drapes on the outside edges to prevent seeing pillar black bars and to get an aspect ratio that is more to my liking. This is a fairly swanky place and they have good facilities. They have a computer that actually does have 4k video output capability.

That's interesting Frosty. I didn't realize that Vegas was "upscaling" the video. Are your projects projected on a large screen big enough for 400 people to view? I'm wondering if that is a difference between encoding for internet or other small screen formats. Maybe I am thinking about this wrong but if you have a resolution of 3840x1600 and you drop in a 1920x1080 video, to make it fit the resolution, you are effectively zooming in 100% because you have to enlarge x2 to get it to fit into the 3840 resolution. Sorry, if that is worded poorly.

Thanks. So if I have 50% 4k content and 50% HD content, you are recommending that I produce a 1080p master and let the projection team "upsample" it 4k projection? Right?

RANT! sfl files in Vegas are always a mess!
Just wanted to add to the John_Dennis question of checking the settings. If your markers are saved in the media file, when you bring the media file into the trimmer, it will show the markers stored regardless of the settings in the view menu that John pointed out. AT LEAST IT SHOULD.

Thanks Nick. So, I ran all of the clips through Media Encoder to strip out aiff files. Thankfully Vegas still recognizes those.

Thanks Frosty. I was able to export VLC .wav audio BUT it combines the two channels into dual mono. It doesn't keep them stereo or separate microphones in this case. Couldn't see a setting to change this in VLC. The problem with the audacity option is that your playback must be perfect to use that as an option. Occasionally my large 4k files will sputter and that doesn't work. I am pretty sure this is a bug in Vegas 15 now because even Sony Catalyst Browse plays the audio just fine. I will see if there is an export audio option there. If nothing else I will just export the audio clips in Media Encoder. What a mess. Thanks for your help.

Automatic ducking of Voice overs not music??
Tried the noisegate which comes close but again by playing with the attack, release and threshold I can get in the neighborhood of what I want but it isn't good enough to rely on. Looks like manual editing might be the only way. I just wanted to see if I could up my game a little bit.

Hi Marco, I played with the silence detection trying several different level settings but it wouldn't do what I want. It kept selecting the wrong areas for "silence".

I wonder if Magix will be honest with this question. What is the business reason why everyone in the NLE business seems to be so interested in going to a subscription model? Please don't give me the sales pitch about how you can serve you customers better. I am wondering why it is so appealing as a money-maker for the company? Is it about control and fighting piracy? Is it the ability to raise rates incrementally over time in a less noticeable way? Curious if we will get a straight answer on this because I'm pretty sure if Magix were to hold a referendum with their users, the subscription model would be soundly defeated. Yet, Magix and everyone else except Davinci Resolve push on to the subscription approach.

No professional Closed Captions in Vegas 15??
Hi Nick. Thanks for the thread discussions but I'm guessing you understand that Vegas doesn't offer a solution here. I can't imagine why this isn't being addressed. The attraction to Vegas has always been that it works excellent for people form beginning to end of the workflow. To have this big gaping hole at the end of the workflow just doesn't make any sense. If we must use other options to finish our work then that can only be a problem for Vegas going forward. I thought the new focus was to try and truly be professional but still not quite there.

Is Magix AVC/AAC producing worse quality than Sony AVC/MVC?
I have to agree with the points that 3point made. In the end Magix AVC is too slow and isn't as good as Sony AVC.

Regarding the comment that you are allowed to install Vegas on up to 2 computers. I just want to say that there are problems with this. I installed it on two computers but when I open the software on the second computer it says I have too many computers with the software installed and asks me which one I should deactivate. However, when I look at the list it lists the same computer twice on the list! I finally gave up and downloaded the cracked version for the second computer. Worked so easily and painlessly after that.

It appears you are using a trial version of Vegas that has expired? Have you paid for the software and registered it?

Too fast
Isn't this a case where the video was recorded at 60fps with audio. Then when it is imported into a 30fps project you effectively get 50% slow motion video with real time audio being exactly half as long as the video in your clip example.

Ok, let me ask you a question. Do you know how to use Parent/Child tracks in Vegas? I think I would create the layers on various tracks in Vegas using Track Motion. Then I would make all of those tracks a child to a Parent track with an empty event. Make the Parent track 3d and then you can move and twist all of the tracks as you please without changing their relationship with each other.

Vegas Pro 14 slower opening projects than Vegas Pro 12 and 13 by Erik
Right, I don't use 14 either yet. I bought it hoping that it would be helpful but so far, not so much. I am using the same plugins for Vegas 12 through 14 so unless I am missing something, that shouldn't be the reason that Vegas Pro 14 is so slow to load any vegas project file compared to versions 12 or 13. Would be nice if I get someone else to verify this problem as well.

Wolfgang, Thanks for your suggestion. I checked to make sure that both monitors are connected directly to the Quadro 4000 via Display Port adapters. No other GPU is onboard in this computer. Thanks

Nick, I double checked the dynamic ram and they are the same in all versions. If it wasn't for the fact that VP12 and 13 don't crash I would just assume that I have to buy a new video card. Strange that it is only in VP14. Also, there aren't many rollback options for me as I can only go back to Windows 10 versions of the nVidia driver for the Quadro. Only a small number of options. I tried rolling back to 2 different ones released relatively close together with no improvement. Thanks, Erik
