OT- Sun-Times Lays off Entire Photo Staff
This simply one of the first overt signs of what has been creeping into the "news" for some time now. For years the TV networks have been weaning viewers onto dumbed-down news bulletins that feature simplified reports, five-second grabs or half-sentence sound bites that require very litlle thinking about on the part of the viewer. Then they started including dreadful quality video shot on mobile/cell phones/tablets, but it didn't matter that it was dreadful because it was on-the-spot, real-time, imagery. We the consumer lapped it up and gave impetus to this new, hybrid news system that is part Internet quality, part broadcast quality. Soon enough everyone thought that they were a reporter and the Networks have done nothing to temper this new wave of news gathering. It was inevitable that something like these mass dismissals would happen. Just wait for the next big thing, where "funniest home videos" or "bloopers" move to the next level and the Networks start producing shows cobbled together from seriously amateurish video and call it the "real" reality TV.....

FIrewire on camera, none on new computers
USB 3.0 will be of little use to you. The camera also has to be able to meet the uSB 3.0 standard in order to transfer data at the highest speeds. Given that your post indicates that the camera is SD, therefore of an "older" vintage, it is very unlikely that the USB port in it will be USB 3.0. You should be able to buy and fit an after-market Firewire card for the new PC. This is what I did when I built my second-to-last PC and it worked fine. My current PC is based on the mini ITX format and has just one peripheral slot (which is used by the graphics card), so I have had to resort to using the Wife's laptop, which has a firewire port in it. Sad to say, but when the laptop dies, I will probably pension off my HDR-HC3 cameras, although I will still have the option to use my Convergent Design nanoFlash with these cameras and record to solid-state media. In short, fit an after-market card (which may have several ports fitted, not just one.) Cheers

Adobe will be Cloud only!
I live in regional Australia, where communications still consist of two tin cans and a piece of string. Internet access is only practical via one National telco who, naturally, practices robbery without violence when setting their prices. The service is slow and the data allocation is very expensive (I access it via wireless). For me, anything cloud-based is a no-no. Apart from the horrible slowness of the service, the continual upload of data or download of products just eats my monthly data allowance - Vegas is guilty of this too (I shudder when I read that a new version of Vegas has issues because I know that this will mean countless downloads of updates intended to fix those issues.) As each product goes over to the cloud I will find myself clinging to older, PC based, editions of the software until they simply can't be used due to obsolescence. Then I'm stuffed. I have no idea what I will do. One thing I have done over the years, in response to Adobe's vile practice of charging all users outside of the USA a premium price (they've never heard of the Global Economy and currency exchange rates, apparently), is to move to other products. The only Adobe product I now use is Photoshop Elements and I'm currently researching alternatives to that as well. I have always believed that Adobe are corporate scoundrels and this new ploy simply reinforces that opinion.

Civility being lost on this forum
As a reader of, and contributor to, many fora aside from this one (for which I an technically inacapable of making much of a contibution to the pool of knowledge), I have come to these conclusions: There are many people whom are more than happy to share their knowledge. Some contribute information that well reasearched and accurate, while others may be less so - either way, they all mean well. Sometimes contibutors will have different means of reaching the same result and that's OK too. There are those people whom are condescending and treat those with lesser knowledge with a certain degree of contemp. There are those whom, for reasons known only to themselves, find fault with posts by a particular author and then go out of their way to belittle or ridicule the Poster. These three categories of forumite can be seen on any forum, no what the subject of the forum. I have learnt to take the advice of the first group and ignore the other two groups. Good authors are greatly respected by the majority of those visiting fora, whilst the others should be little more than an irritation. I hope that DaveT2 has a break, then comes back refreshed and more able to deal with the less savoury elements.

Praise for version 12
I, too, have used V12 with no real problems except for just one time when a render job produced nothing but black frames. In that instance I must have stuffed something up in the render template because it did not do it again, nor has it ever done it since. My system specs are posted. System 1 is a Toshiba laptop that rarely gets used these days. It was used to do editing while travelling. Now I use system 2 for the same job. It is based around a mini itx motherboard and is portable enough to lug around in our caravan (trailer, for our friends in the US). My workflow is varied but I have edited projects that are a mix of mxf files from my EX1R, m2t files from my HDR-HC3 cameras, mp4 from my GoPro and mov from my DSLR camera. I output 720p for the Internet in most cases. I don't use intemediatries or proxies when editing, but do use colour correction to match the cameras to each other. I also use stabiliser occasionally and Bluff Titler. Having an IT background hasn't helped me understand the perplexing issues that others experience with Vegas Pro and I am grateful that, for whatever reason, it just works on my rig. Cheers

Received the same email today and took the plunge. I held off on V12 as I wasn't convinced that it was robust enough, but was wavering. Then, along comes this offer! $99.95 USD, which is about $95.00 AUD at the moment and no taxes of any sort to pay. Gotta be happy with that. Cheers Russ

Vegas Pro 12 released!
In the past I have always taken up the early adopter offer for every version of VP. V11 was stable for me (except for just one instance of "replaced clips" on the timeline), but having read the woes of others throughout the life-cycle of the release, I think I'll sit on V12 until the last day or so of the offer. I'll just watch this forum and glean info from the more experienced users and then use that to decide whether I'll upgrade at all. I'm not even sure whether I'll even download the trial software. Who is Now Using V11.683 for Paid Projects?
Handed a 77 minute production to a customer on Saturday. Five cam multicam shoot (2 at 1920 x 1080 50i, two at 1440 x 1080 50i and one at 720 50p), with 13 audio tracks, lots of cc, effects. Used Bluff Titler for the titles but everything else was done with V11/683. Not one crash or glitch of any kind. Gotta be happy with that. Russ

OT The beginning of the end?
G'day Brian Not all analogue transmitters have been duplicated with digital. In rural and remote areas many of the existing analogue tx's are self-help stations put in by organisations such as shire councils and aboriginal corporations. These organisations cannot be compelled to upgrade to digital and many won't be. Our shire council installed the SBS ananlogue service years ago, but still have not committed to going digital. I went out and purchased a VAST satellite receiver and can now pick up pretty much anything. Cheers Russ

OT: Sony enters the prosummer 4K space
I would buy one in a heartbeat if Sony came up with an adapter that allowed me to use the extensive array of glass that I have for my Canon EOS still cameras. And I'm not talking about a flange that allows me to screw the lens on. I would want all the electrics so that the exposure, etc were controllable from the camera. Won't happen in my lifetime I guess. Prolly have to wait until Canon update the features and drop the price of the C300 in response to Sony.

First Project Done Entirely in V11 Complete
@Grazie Yes, system number two. Now also overclocked to 4.5GHz. I have established that the liquid cooling keeps my CPU within my self-imposed temperature range at this clock speed. @jmpatrick I got the Gainward graphics card through an Australian supplier http://www.skycomp.com.au Mobo is an ASUS P8P68 EVO. @farss Bob, I guess it is a bit remarkable for someone to post about a "success" with a version of a software package. I guess the primary reason for posting was as a response to a general feeling of negativity that I was picking up from the threads on this forum. I just felt that publishing a "success" story might help to counterbalance that negativity a bit. Cheers Russ

What should I get to build new computer for Vegas?
I think that we should keep in mind that the OP is talking about a Sandy Bridge mobo and i7 2600K CPU. This configuration uses multiples of two memory modules...that is, you install two modules or four modules. It is a different architecture to the triple-channel architecture of the previous generation of i7 CPUs. Most mobo manufacturers equip the slots in two different colours so that the system builder can see that the memory should be fitted in pairs - and in the correct slots. Memory timing will not be an issue regardless of whether 4 GB (2 x 2), 8 Gb (2 x 4), 8 Gb (4 x 2) or 16 Gb (4 x 4) is used. If the OP can afford 16 GB then he should go for it. Cheers Russ

Sony Can Learn From Adobe Re: Software Activations
I'm of the opposite view to you, Jamil. My experience with Adobe activations has been nothing less than a nightmare. If something goes wrong in the process the user can end up in a "no man's land" whereby the clowns at Adobe support require you to go through hoops to prove that you are whom you are and that you have actually paid for the copy that you wish to activate. All handled by a call centre in India by a well-meaning support person whom you simply cannot understand. Going off-topic, Adobe also charge Australian customers 50% more than US customers to download exactly the same product from the same server! If an Australian customer tries to purchase an Adobe product their email address, physical address, telephone number, credit card details and paypal account are all checked to ascertain "country of origin" details and if any come up "Australian", Adobe redirect you to their Australian online store - where you have to pay the 50% extra. It sucks. The Aussie dollar has been worth more than the US dollar for almost a year now and Adobe want to double-dip and hit us twice. I have successfully weaned myself off their products and now only have Photoshop Elements (and I wouldn't have this either, if the Missus didn't need it for the stuff she does for the Photography Club.) Sorry for the hijack, Jamil, but my experience with Adobe is that I've never had even one positive outcome. Cheers Russ

OK.....can somebody cue the theme music to the "Twilight Zone". Something really strange is happening in the parallel universe. My Alter ego, aka "NAkeshIa BENNETT", is also posting the same stuff as "anatavism/Andreas" is posting on this side of the Great Divide. Now I'm wondering if "anatavism/Andreas" and I are the same person or whether it's possible for two people from this side to meld their inner cosmic beings into one person on the other side? Vegas 11 Jump List?
@Zeitgeist My jumplist wasn't working for Vegas 11 either. It was working fine for V10. One thing I had not done was to allow Vegas 11 to be associated with .veg files. I dismissed the message that popped up each time I started V11. On a hunch, I allowed Vegas 11 to be associated with .veg files and now I get a jump list for it. I suspect that this will affect the automatic updating of the jump list in V10, but haven't messed around with it yet to see if that is so. Cheers Russ

GoPro releases new HD HERO2 camera system
Looks like some nice new features in a camera that has quite acceptable quality. That said, I purchased my GoPro Hero HD with all the best intentions of using it for a million and one things but have generally just faffed around with it and, in reality, have sold just 62 seconds of vision taken by it in two years of ownership. @ Bob (farss) Sure, no viewfinder, but I did purchase the piggyback LCD display for mine and that has help a lot with framing shots....especially when the camera is mounted low and I don't particularly want to get down on my belly to frame the shot. The LCD gives me a passing chance at a good shot, while still staying on my feet (or at worst, my knees.) I can't see myself upgrading for a while yet....at least until the one I have now has paid for itself. Russ
