Unable to use scroll/zoom
Thanks for replying. The arrows on the keyboard work fine. The mouse wheel (scrolling up and down) just doesn't do it anymore. I'll use the arrows- thanks. [EDIT: Both mouses were Microsoft and their scroll wheels were perfectly smooth. I bought a Logitech (with a bumpy scroll wheel "feel") and the problem is solved.]

OT - Widescreen TV Recommendation
Funny you should mention this. I just went throught the process of researching these (plus a few others) for my dad. He ended up buying the Sony Bravia S Series KDL-40S2000. We got it at Circuit City, which has a price match. The sales rep went on line and found the lowest price and matched it. LCD's are especially great in a normal family room because there is no glare. You don't see the windows and lamps reflect from the screen. The HDTV (connected through a cable card) looks fantastic. The problem of "ghosting" (a problem associated with LCD TVs) is just about non existant in this Sony. The sound is good, not great on the standalone set, but adding external audio to it makes it sound great. Also, LCD TV's have the "screen door effect", but outside of 6-8 feet viewing distance, it goes away. The standard definition broadcasts (non HDTV) are not as good as an internal projection, but it is pretty good. I would highly recommend the Sony.

OT: Pet Peeve
(sic) is used when quoting someone else, but THEIR grammar is bad (in the quote). Put (sic) after the word or phrase that is misspelled or used incorrectly. You want the reader to know that the mistake was already in the quote and not a typo or mistake on your part.

OT: Wedding Video *Shoot* Only.
Congratulations on your daughter's wedding. You don't know if it is one or two cameras? I suggest you make sure you get 2 cameras going. Having a second camera is key. First of all, editing with Excalibur or Ultimate-S multi-cam features makes editing so much fun! But more importantly, that second camera gets so much more of the "good stuff" that the first camera doesn't get (reactions of the guests, different angles, etc...). I find that when you have the ability to cut to the parents of the bride/groom, a wide shot of the church/hall as secondary footage really adds to the production. Also, having a second camera at a wedding really saved my butt as a shooter/ editor - changing tapes, people walking in front of camera, etc... You never know what will happen. Expect the unexpected. I would also look at the way audio will be recorded. I have seen professional companies send out their demo tapes where the audio wasn't loud and clear. Talk about a letdown. Is there a wireless mic with backup? I use an Iriver with a Giant Squid mic and I was blown away with the crisp clear audio. I was planning on using that as backup and used it as primary in a lot of cases. Another tip: Keep a video cam on the dance floor (I assume this includes the reception as well) on a tripod. I made a separate DVD of just dancing (edited to 1.5 hours long). Sounds boring, right? Who wants to watch dancing that long? Well, you might be surprised that the bride in this case and her friends watch the dancing all the time, laughing all the way through it. White balancing of course is key. The lighting is never optimal. You want an on-camera light that doesn't blind people. Monopods work well to get steady shots, and are more manueverable than tripods. Make sure the videographer attends the rehearsal (just have him show up for 20 minutes to get a feel for the setup, don't invite him to dinner). Also, make sure you tell the DJ to inform the shooter of what's happening. In many cases the DJ can be the shooter's best friend at the reception. When the bride wants something to start (cake-cutting, garter toss, etc...) they don't tell the video guy. They run up to the DJ and tell him because he has the mic. There's nothing better than the DJ telling me to go setup "over there" because the bride just told him "Event A" is going to start in one minute and he is going to announce it after the song is over. Nothing new here, just a few reminders for you based on my experience. (Edited for grammar)

OT: Printing problems with Acrobat
I saved these directions I got off of some website: If you're unable to print then you have nothing to lose by trying to unclog by this soaking method. Be sure and follow these directions to the letter, however, or you WILL damage the cartridge irreveribly even if you could have gotten it working again: Heat distilled water (not filtered, not bottled water, you MUST use distilled water) until almost boiling. You want steam rising from it. Pour it into a container that you can set your cartridge in so that the water will come up the cartridge approx. 1/4". Let the cartridge soak in the hot distilled water until the water comes to room temperature (don't worry if you see ink in the water - it's okay). Take the cartridge out and blot the head gently on folded paper towel. Install it back in the printer, align the heads, and try a test page. If it still doesn't print, try cleaning the print nozzles using your printer software. If it still doesn't work, it's dead! :( By the way, never, never use anything other than a folded paper towel to clean your cartridge with (such as Q-tip, tissue, etc.); you'll damage it for sure!

OT: "FONY" SONY does it again.
"Cutting edge?" If I read the above article correctly, SONY is breaking the law. They have the money to pay the fines obviously, but that's why there is the controversy in the first place. If these were on billboards, we wouldn't be talking about it. If it is true that SONY is breaking the law (but that's okay since they can afford it) in order to get publicity like this, then shame on them. That's ALL I want (sarcasm)- more companies illegally advertising on buildings. Lord knows we have a lot of buildings, and there are plenty of companies who can afford the fines. If I misinterpreted the article and what SONY is doing is perfectly legal, then my apologies.

O.T: Why so many transitions?
The question that LarryP asks in the post when he started this thread is "Is glitz the main reason for so many transitions?" Well, I unapologetically say the answer is "yes". I have made several videos for different occasions and many of them have just cuts and/or fades. I understand how using more "glitzy" transitions can bring down the quality of many projects as they can be distracting. I get it. However, there are other videos I make where I want to choose from a million different "gaudy" transitions. I do want Vegas to develop more transitions. Who knows, maybe there are some great ones no one has thought of yet. So I would love Vegas to keep making more transitions. Maybe keep them in a separate file on their website where people can download them if they want to take advantage of them for a particular project. Sometimes these "gaudy" transitions can look real cool, in my opinion. If that makes it less "professional" or less "sophisticated" then so be it. If Vegas came out with 50 new transitions, wouldn't you at least take a look at them? Maybe download one or two....or thirty? I know I would! Jeff

Render time slow for V6 vs V5
FLDave: I made the adjustments you mentioned, but it is still slow for some reason. I rendered a single 30 second .avi clip with nothing done to it. Render times: V6b: 11 min 38 sec (so I upgraded to V6c) V6c: 11 min 41 sec V5d: 39 seconds go figure- I am thinking that I will remove V6 off my machine completely, reinstall it and try again. Thanks for your help. Jeff [EDIT: I re-installed V6 and got a 44 second render time when my RAM was set to 32mb... got the same when I set it to zero..It's pretty much comparable now which is good because I can use nested timelines again. Thanks.]

FLDave: Yes I found your conclusions very helpful! You say to keep Dynamic Ram at 0 or greater than or equal to 128. I will try this. I am confused on the number of threads. Should I change this from 4 to 1? ( I just have one processor on my standalone computer. I just work with standard DV.) [Is the SONY Admin (Dr.Dropout- post above) suggesting that 6c has fixed this so if I download 6c I won't have to do what you suggest with the threads and dynamic ram?] Thanks! Jeff

Vegas 6 Training DVD Recommendations
I would definitely recommend #3 or #4. I own #3 and love it. I also own previous DVD's from #4 and love those as well. Not a slight to #1 or #2, but I never saw those particular DVD's, so I am unqualified to judge. If you want to learn Vegas in a way that really teaches you how to fluently use it, the teachers on #3 and #4 are excellent. Can't go wrong with either one IMHO.

OT: Using Vegas/Ultra - commercial feedback?
Ken, Great job! Some observations: Your lower thirds have a background that looks like it is crossing out the words within the lower thirds. Maybe a different lower third background would make the words stand out fully. There was a scene where you are in the middle and you have a PIP on both your right and left. The PIP's are centered nicely on either side, but the phrases above them are not centered over your PIP's (they're close). One more... when you completely disapear off the screen, you just go like that (snapping fingers....gone). Maybe a quick fade out may work better? Your voice stands out nicely... when the other male voice first appears, it seems a tad lower in quality...not as good as your voice in quality... OK, that's it... let me say "wow- great job!" Jeff

OT: Media Reponsiblity and Fairness
Wow! What a thread... I have ignored this thread for days and I just read the whole thing from top to bottom... took me 1 hour and 15 minutes. Going back to the original idea of media fairness, it seems that "straight reporting" doesn't have what it takes to stay competitive with all the other more sensational news programs and outlets. The line between opinions and facts is blurry. No one has the time to do their own investigaing on everything, so it's hard to challenge statements by articulate confidant "commentators". Even when they have a person on the "other side" "debating" them, it usually boils down to "you're wrong"...."no, YOU"RE wrong" "Okay, that's all the time we have, we'd like to thank our guests...." So, what's the solution? Maybe we need these corporations to say "we will subsidize our news program from our other programming, but we will do it right. It's okay that our news department is doing good reporting but not making any money". Hahahahaha..... yeah, right. But it would be nice.

I am playing around with my exposure settings in an effort to learn about them, but am still trying to understand it. Do you have any suggestions (books?) to help me better understand exposure (I also have a GL2). I hope I didn't hijack this thread, but the original poster wanted advice on getting better shots and so do I. Interested in learning more about exposure. Thanks, Jeff

OT: Serious Magic Ultra 2 Just Released
Ken.... seems interesting.... One of my fears about green screening is all the effort it takes to have an evenly well lit back drop. Does Ultra work with unevenly lit, wrinkled back drops? Did you try really bad back drops to see if they would key? Thanks!

Excalibur 4.2 crashes In Vegas6
I did the same thing you did, but 4.2 works fine for me. It said if you had 4.0 to completely uninstall it first and then download 4.2. Did you do that? Jeff

Yes, it is probably a memory issue. I have a little icon that shows my memory levels and once in a while it shows that all my memory is being used and I have to wait it out, like you. Photoshop can be a memory hog too...you can lower the amount of UNDO levels in PS preferences and this helps. I have 1GB DDR memory.

Thanks for the link BB...I finally understand what the color settings mean. Lots of stuff there including Photoshop tutorials and Illustrator tutorials as well. I have Illustrator, but never really understood it.
