Audio/Video question
Hi Jerry, I use the free program tsMuxerGUI to replace the audio in a file without re-rendering. The program is easy to use and very quick. I find I need to create the new audio file to be 2 frames early in order for it to be correctly synchronized in the new output file. Jeremy

Removing A Nasty White Background
Try using the Secondary Color Corrector instead of Chroma Key. Set alpha to zero to make the matched area transparent, and you can adjust the hue range and luminance levels with more precision than you can get with Chroma Key. Jeremy

HD render to DVD - avoid pillarbox?
Thank you, John! That's exactly what I needed. Black bars gone but original shape retained, at the small cost of a little trimmed off the top and bottom of the image. Jeremy

I increased the "rate" on my timeline...
The above works for VegasPro 9,10,11,12. (Elastique time stretch was not available in earlier versions.) The time stretch method isn't used when 'Lock to Stretch' is selected, so it doesn't matter which one you pick. I've used 'Lock to Stretch' for years to avoid time stretch artifacts when adjusting separately-recorded audio to match video. For small changes the pitch change is undetectable. Currently works fine on Vegas 7. Jeremy

Cineform render with Vegas 7?
I'm finally working on a project where I need to replace the audio track, and I found that the free program Avidemux does this very easily. Open the video file, go to Audio and select "external wav" as the audio source, pick your audio file, then select Save Video. Thanks, Nick, for the pointer.

There's a BBC documentary from 1986 commemorating 50 years of British TV, posted on YouTube by Stefan Sargent, who writes a column in DV Magazine. Part 2 of the doc describes the early days of British TV. It's quite good.

Cineform render with Vegas 7?
Thanks so much! I should have mentioned that I do have NeoScene installed. Yes, I was able to select the CineForm HD Codec v7.1.3 in the Video Format selection, and construct a template for HD rendering. One thing -- I'm re-encoding a CineForm file to replace camera audio with separately-recorded audio, but the video is getting re-rendered even though the video settings match the clip properties. Is that normal?

OT: YouTube back to 360p?
Yeah, you'd think, but not so. The videos I posted at 720p default to 360 and offer 720 as an option, but the videos I posted at 480p can only be watched at 360.

Flourescent NTSC flicker removal
Donald Graft's deflicker 1.1 for VirtualDub works great for 50hz flicker on NTSC. There are some other VD deflicker filters that aren't helpful.

record google earth?
Too bad about the permission. I didn't know that when I used Google Earth as part of an animation for an opera production (Don Giovanni). I first tried the trial version of Google Earth Pro, but it watermarked the video with "Trial Version". Went with a primitive shareware screen capture program, AviScreen Classic, that ran at about 4 fps, so programmed a very slow GE tour. The happy result is here:

What are the issues editing 30 fps in Vegas?
Easiest way is to set the Playback rate property for the clip to 0.999. Stretch the audio track to match the video length and set 'Pitch change: Lock to stretch' to avoid any fancy stretch artifacts.

OT: Photographing DLP projectors
Thanks, everybody! Actually, the projections are mine as well, so I have complete control over the situation. The odd thing is that looking at the scene directly, the color balance between projections and stage lighting is fine. (I'm using a warm color temperature setting on the projectors.) It's just in the camera's viewfinder that the projections are blueish. The recording is mainly for archival purposes, so it's not totally tragic if I can't get the projections accurately rendered, but I can't help wondering if there's something odd going on with the camera vs. the human eye. I observed a possibly related problem shooting a show a few years ago that had quite a bit of purple in it. The human eye sees purple at the far blue end of the spectrum because the eye's red sensors are still active as the blue sensors reach the edge of their sensitivity. I would look at the set and see purple, but the camera was seeing only blue.

OT: Mailing DVDs - new US postal regulations
Media mail is still around -- it's now $2.13 for the first pound. First class is cheaper for lightweight packages, and gets there faster too. Media mail can take three weeks to get across the country.

image shifts depending on background
Sounds like a common problem with consumer CRT TVs called "bloom". If the image is bright, sending all those electrons to the phosphor screen drops the high voltage, and the deflection magnets steering the beam have a greater effect and the picture gets a little bigger. Nothing you can really do about it except avoid abrupt changes from dark to light. Jeremy Edit: Dang, Worley, you beat me to it!

Anyone having problems downloading Vegas 7.0c
I had trouble a while back trying to download the Vegas 7 update using Opera. Finally switched to IE and all went fine. Go figure.

Any quick way to "Undo" Loop region?
One way is to type "IO", which sets both in and out points to the cursor position. Since the keys are right next to each other it's quick to do. Jeremy
