Vegas on a MacBook Pro?
Vegas will run perfectly on an Apple laptop. You can either use bootcamp to boot native windows, which will give you top performance. Or you can use virtual machines like VM ware fusion or Parallels. This is slightly slower but fully integrated in Mac OS X. I have tried both and on recent machines and it works very well.

OT: regarding Zoom H4N
Ulf, Distortion is a well known issue with the Zoom H4N. Basically the external inputs are pretty much useless as their levels can not be controlled (the level-setting seems to work AFTER the A/D-converter). Furthermore they are also very "hot" - so you need to feed them from an external mixer and set the H4N's internal level to 100 (straight) to avoid distortions. Mac Pro- format 1 drive to 2 NTFS for Win 7 and XP
This is Apple's statement about running Windows 7 in Bootcamp: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3920 Apparently they don't fully support it yet but I have seen numerous reports of people who are using it without problems... Congrats for getting this complex setup running :-) What macpro do you have? AFAIK the very first version doesn't support OS X 64-bit. I have the 'early 2008' version and I can choose to boot into 64-bit OS X by holding down both the '6' and '4' keys at boot-time. There is also a terminal command to make this permanent if you wanted to... Vista 64 did install without any issues on my machine as well.

Mac Pro- format 1 drive to 2 NTFS for Win 7 and XP
That sounds impossible to me since the Apple boot-manager can just handle one NTFS and one HFS+ partition. But - why don't you just install Win 7 64 using bootcamp ? Forget about the 32 bit Windows - both the 64 and 32 bit version of Vegas will run fine with a 64 bit Windows. At least on my Mac Pro this works nicely. However, I have Vista 64 and not Win 7 64. I heard there are still some issues with Win 7 in Bootcamp. Don't know the details, though. BTW, the paragon software will only allow you to read and write NTFS partitions. It is not a partition manager.

I am using Vegas since version 4 and followed all updates until 9b. Being disappointed by Sony's recent developments (or better: lack thereof) I started switching to Final Cut Studio 3 a few weeks ago...

All tracks missing when reopening Veg V9 64
I often have the same problem with Vegas 9 when opening a large project (90 mins) with many clips and effects. Try to open a small project first or add some tracks manually to the timeline. Then open your big project. This works for me most of the time. Martin

Choppy playback of Vegas HD files on PS3
I found this as well. Try different bitrates. For me it usually works as long as the bitrate is not exceeding 14 mbps.

Vegas and other Sony products for MAC
Funny - there seem to be just two kinds of computer users in the world: Those who have never used a Mac and those who love it ;-) I have switched more than a year ago and couldn't be happier. Today we have four Macs in my household and a fifth one (a MacBook) is just on its way. In fact, Vegas Video is about the only reason why I boot into Windows Vista from time to time. Everything else is now purely OS X for me. And yes: En emulated Windows runs much faster under OS X in many aspects than a genuine copy on the same machine. This is not against the laws of physics but simply due to the fact that all file IO is handled by the much, much faster OS X instead of Windows. I have experienced this many times myself (using Windows XP and not the even slower Vista...). You wouldn't believe how fast Word, Excel or Powerpoint start up in Windows XP inside a virtual machine unless you have seen this for yourself. Even setting up the Virtual PC took less than half the time than installing the same OS on a genuine PC (OS X cached the whole installation CD - all by itself). Martin

Current Vegas 9 bug collection.
22. In Vegas 9 - 64 bit: Opening a large project with many clips may result in a blank timeline. The project is there (it plays back!), but the timeline is completely white and never updated when other windows are dragged over it.

On my MacPro (2008 model with 2x 2,8 GHz quad core and 8 GB RAM running Vista Ultimate 64): 8.0b = 1:50 (4 Threads) 8.1 = 1:36 (4 Threads) 8.1 = 0:53 (8 Threads) 9.0(64) = 0:50 (8 Threads) Edit: I should add that all of the above were made with Video Quality "15" and Render Quality "best" (i.e. the default values).

I am using a Mac Pro (2x 4 core, 8 GB RAM) since last spring and have Vista Ultimate 64-bit running under boot camp. All I can say is this machine works like a charm. No problems under Windows whatsoever. Vegas 8.1 and 9.0 (64 bit) can use all processors and all of the available RAM. I am also using Vegas 9 (32-bit) under VMWare Fusion in an emulated Win-XP environment. Again - works like a charm without any problems. I have never tried to capture footage in the Virtual Machine and I have not seen evidence that VMWare supports FireWire either. But that's not a big deal as the Virtual Machine can easily access both the HFS+ Mac harddrive as well as the NTFS Vista harddrive (both read and write) out of the box. Apart from that I can only support what others have already said: Mac OS X blows any Windows operating system out of the water. I even have Windows 7 RC here (again, running in an VMWare virtual machine) and I am not particularly impressed. The only reason for me to continue using Windows is Vegas Video. For anything else I have now switched to OS X. Martin

You can either run Vegas on your Mac by installing Windows in a separate hard disc partition (as a Dual-Boot using Apple's bundled Boot Camp Software) or you can purchase a Virtual PC Software (like VMWare Fusion) and run Vegas on your Mac desktop. Both methods work fine.

Magic Bullet Movie Looks HD and Vegas 9 (64-bit)
... and what about the Cinescore Plugin? I have no luck getting this installed either. BTW, I am keeping Vegas 8.0 (32-bit) on my system for now. Whenever I reinstall Magic Bullet and/or Cinescore both show up in Vegas 8.0 only. I guess this one is also not compatible ?

why 1920x1080?
When you render out to WMV-HD (aka VC1) some players do not understand the anamorphic video format 1440x1080 (1.33 aspect ratio). That is probably the only reason why you would render out HDV-material in 1920x1080 (1.0 aspect ratio). In blu-ray (mp4) such limitations do not exist to the best of my knowledge. Since I am using a Sony PS3 for playback I render out 1440x1080 m2ts files (mp4) all the time.

Vegas and Mac
I switched to a MacPro last spring. Both the hardware and Mac OS X are absolutely impressive and years ahead of Windows Vista. You won't believe how smooth an operating system experience can be. Meanwhile I also got a ancient iMac G4 (700 MHz) - just for the fun of it. Even this 7 year old machine runs circles around my wife's lastest generation Vista laptop! I am feeling much like you are:: I LOVE Vegas Video's workflow. So I have a dual boot setup with Vista Ultimate 64 on my MacPro. Fortunately, Vista runs on the Mac with no more problems than on any other machine... But for anything else I'm now strictly using OS X. If only Sony released a Mac version of Vegas

OT: vegas 8 on linux (please vote)
Thanks to Vista I have switched to Mac four months ago and I could not be happier. The only reason why I still have Vista installed as dual boot on a second partition is Vegas Pro. So my vote goes to Vegas for Mac ! Martin

I am using Apple's BootCamp dual-boot software to start either Mac OS X or Vista Ultimate 64. The software ships with every Mac and is very easy to set up. You'll only need a genuine copy of Windows to finish the installation and - voila ;-) Martin

Vegas with iMac
Yep, works very nicely on my Mac Pro under boot camp with Vista Ultimate 64. Also works with VMware fusion right on the OS X desktop. I only wish Sony would release a native OS X version of Vegas ;-) Martin

2, 4 or 8 cores?
Why not look at Apple's Mac Pro? They have two quadcores (X5400; 1600 FSB; 45nm Penryn based) and they are very competitive. Vista 64 runs on these machines like a charm (dual boot). I've received mine just three days ago and have installed and tested everything but didn't find the time to do speed tests with Vegas so far. Martin

Is 64-bit Vista required for 8-core support of Vegas Pro 8.1? Or will the 8-core support also work with 32-bit Vista ?

To Deinterlace or not?
Rocky, I did a lot of testing in this area in recent years and my recommendations are: For DV source: Do not deinterlace. If you did, you could only deliver 30 progressive frames per second instead of 60 interlaced frames. The quality per image would not benefit from progressive scan as the source was already interlaced anyhow. For HDV source the same principle applies. However you need to make sure Vegas handles the different fields and resolutions correctly. It is best to use 60fps progressive HD as an intermediate format before you finally render out to 60fps interlaced SD: 1. Set up the project in it's native HDV format (HDV 1080-60i) 2. Change the project settings to 60 frames Double-NTSC, progressive, deinterlace method 'Interpolate Fields': 3. Render the video using your favorite SD-template (in interlaced format) Martin P.s.: Of course you can argue that for HDV source material, progressive SD is an improvement because each HDV-field already has 540 lines. I prefer the smoother motion of interlaced material over the last bit of resolution coming from progressive rendering. But that's personal taste, I guess (and also depends on the type of material you are working with). P.p.s.: If you render not for DVD but for playback on computers I would always prefer to deinterlace the material in Vegas because most computer playback software does a very poor job when deinterlacing. In this case you could also render 60fps progressive and get the best of both worlds.
