Inactivity from Sony Creative Software
Right JR, Microsoft still won't abandon 32 bit. But it still seems to be a necessary concession to the realities of what kind of hardware people still have and use in the non-Apple universe. Really annoying to me is the fact that many of the current sub $500 Windows tablets are 32 bit as far as I know. No 64 bits applications on these bitty computers. :-( It is wise of Sony to still make a 32 bit version of Movie Studio for this market. It would be nice if Sony included both 32 and 64 versions.

Vegas Pro 12 editor teaming with FCP editor?
XBERK, what you went through is not really new. I did PCB layout. I started doing designs in the 70's with tape on a light table. I was one of the first to embrace using ECAD software in the mid 80's. In the 90's I went to work for a large electronics company. All the recent engineering grads were super fanboys of Unix based workstations. They laughed at PC based CAD software. They said that PC's would NEVER be able to compete. Well, today ECAD vendors products are written for Windows and run on PC's. Yes, I know that some are still using Unix or more likely Linux to get their jobs done, but it's a smaller and smaller market. Some are using OS X computers with their Unix programs ported over. I don't knock people who use Unix/Linux/OSX to get their work done, except when they make claims that Windows software and PC's are inherently inferior. Those kind of claims say more about a fragile ego than a rational assessment of technology!

Opening Project Takes Hours
MUTTLEY, I couldn't duplicate your #3(A?) "renaming a parent folder..." step. Vegas 12 still goes "Not Responding" for me. Just checked what happens when closing (File... Close...) a troublesome project. Vegas 12 goes "Not Responding" and takes a few minutes to actually close the project. Still only one core being used. I also tried modifying the Project Media window options, no improvement. I'm kind of suspicious of those new features in the Vegas 12 Project Media window. "Smart Bins" and "Tags" are new to Vegas 12, they weren't there in previous versions. Could these be the source of the ridiculously long loading times? Is the Project Media code trying to add or figure out how to tag files? Is the new "Smart Bin" feature out-smarting it self? ;-) Ned

Opening Project Takes Hours
MUTTLEY, Looking at your systems specs, our computers have only one thing in common, 8 GB of RAM, so I monitored the Windows Task Manager Performance graph. When opening my old project, with the Project Media window open, the RAM usage didn't go up very much but only one of my processors four cores was was being utilized, only one! When I opened the same project with the Project Media window closed all four of the processor cores were pegged for just a few seconds then the project loaded in a few more seconds. I speculate that the Project Media window calls single a threaded sub-routine when opening projects and that it is choking (a technical term ;-) while trying to do whatever it trying to do! I didn't submit an official bug report. Now that is a confirmed bug, could you? Nedski

MUTTLEY, try this. 1 - Start Vegas 12 2 - Close the "Project Media" window 3 - Open your troublesome project Does it open much faster? 4 - Open the "Project Media" window Does Vegas go "Not responding" for a long time? What you're experiencing is similar to what I've seen when opening a large project started in an older version of Vegas. No amount of futzing would make it open as fast as a project started in Vegas 12. I've have no solution yet. Nedski

VP 12 "Project Media" problem
VideoTguy, tried it, no improvement. Thanks. The Project Media window is doing bad things. So far it's repeatable. NOTE: This problem does not seem to affect the opening small Vegas projects! The "large" projects I'm having the problem with have have about 200 - 250 items in the Project Media window. I guess I'll try to find if there is a tipping point with the number of files in a project.

VP 12 "Project Media" problem
Jerald, nope, no external drives. I have three internal drives. The OS and Vegas program is on the boot drive. The Vegas project files and the video files are on two separate drives. Check my system specs, I'm using Vista 64. All of the latest MS patches are installed. Video card Nvidia 9600 GT has the latest driver as well. As I mentioned this problem does not exist in VP11. The Project Media window is really an essential tool. :-(

How to adjust levels in a portion of a clip?
@ Gene Aum For about three years I recorded lectures at a local observatory. I tried masking the presenter and playing with the levels in Vegas. The noise in the masked portion never looked good. The solution that worked the best for me was to use two 3W LED spotlight bulbs with square, homemade snoots made from black foam core. The total cost was under twenty dollars each. I hung the lights from the eight foot high drop ceiling. One light was pointed at the lecturer straight on, the other was on the right side, at maybe a 45 degree angle. The light at 45 degrees was to illuminate the lecturers face when they turned towards the screen. The snoots would limit the light spill on the screen. The lights were about eight to ten feet from the presenter. The room was dark except for the light from the screen and recessed red lights in the ceiling. The lecturers were literally right next to the screen and most of them would, as you've mentioned with your presenters, physically interact with the screen by touching the screen with their hands or using laser pointers. Since you move around to different rooms, I'd suggest that you mount the lights on inexpensive, black colored, light stands and put them between the presenter and the first row on the audience. Here is an example of one of the lectures. I also used two cameras in the example. I did use the method of adding their PowerPoint presentation once in a while. It was extremely tedious to time their slide changes. Check out this lecture. I didn't use the LED lights for this one since it was in a large auditorium and I had a very cooperative lighting person! I also would use a wireless lavalier mic. Good Luck!

VEGAS PRO 11 DOES NOT LOAD PROJECT ANYMORE
Here is one method I learned from the folks here about opening up projects that don't want to be opened. I recently had a problem opening a project and I found that just one of the project files was corrupted. MOVE all the files associated with the project to another folder or RENAME the folder they are in. When you open the project Vegas will ask for the location of the missing files. Chose the "Specify a new location or replacement file" option. Bring in the files one at a time by answering "no" to the dialog box asking if you want to use the same location for all the rest of the files. You go through this procedure until you find the file(s) that are making Vegas balk. Sorry if my explanation is sort of vague! I hope you can experiment and solve the problem.

WOT: LCD TV as computer monitor
"Thanks for all your input. What kind of connections would I need from the pc to the tv. Not all TV's have pc input." I use inexpensive 3 or 5 meter DVI to HDMI cables. I have two PC's, a cable box and a Blu-Ray player connected. Each cable costs between $5 and $20 each from a major online retailer. I tried the analog VGA "PC" input with an expensive VGA cable, the results were clearly inferior to the all digital connection. The simplest way to describe it is it's "fuzzy," stick to digital if you can.

WOT: LCD TV as computer monitor
I'm using a 42" JVC JLC42BC300, $500 from Costco. It has a CFL backlight. It does has RGB Gain and Offset adjustments, though I haven't seen the need to change them. My Mark 1 eyeball says the color is acceptable. It looks somewhat better than my previous display, a 37" Westinghouse monitor I bought in 2005. I sit about three feet away from it when I'm using the computer, I sit about seven feet away when using for viewing TV or HD or SD video discs. I like it. I guess if I had unlimited funds I would get a few 27" 2560 x 1440 monitors that are specifically made for color accuracy, until then I'm satisfied. YMMV ;-)

Vegas vs FCPX vs Premiere vs Avid
Martin, as you might be able to see from the comments here is that Vegas has a great number of strong features. Also you might see that most of the negative comments about Vegas are about it's stability. I hope in your review that you make the reported stability of each NLE as separate section. You should read the user comments of each NLE forum. I've have Vegas 11, FCP7 and Premiere CS5 and I've had stability problems with all of them. Since none of them are perfect, I choose the NLE that is the closest to perfection and that is Vegas! As some others have suggested, I don't think you should review older versions of each NLE., especially FCP. Apple killed the old versions of FCP. FCP X is pretty much a completely different product!

Let's play " Guess the video camera"
I notice that most of the interior is in focus so I would guess that it has a small sensor. The exposure range is pretty good, the highlights and shadows look pretty good. Maybe a three chip Panasonic model such as the HDC-TM900?

JohnnyRoy So if Sony made a iOS iPad video editing app similar in scope to the iOS iMovie would you be buy it? Of course, the video projects should be able to be read/transferred to Vegas yes? There are quite a few iOS video editing apps, I wonder if Sony could be persuaded to write one or outsource it? Sony Creative could dip their toes into the Mac world without bankrupting themselves or burdening the Vegas 13 team. ;-)

JohhnyRoy. Thanks, your explanation of "It just works" is far more enlightening that how most Mac users explain it. I can appreciate your experience. I've heard some pretty weird things from a few Mac users I know. One told me that I could NOT edit video on a PC... as I was handing them a DVD I edited/created with Vegas and DVDA. Another Mac user proudly boasted "I can search for anything on my Mac!" The oddest claim was a former Apple employee proudly showing off their new Intel G5 Mac Pro, that's right, they said Intel...... G5! Maybe you should modify that phrase to say "They all work together, easily!" In a previous life I used Apollo, Sun and HP-UX workstations for E-CAD work, so I do know how flexible Unix and it's variants can be. PS. The only app that I have now that can really crap up Windows is Adobe Premiere CS5. It's very strange, Premiere was the first NLE software that I had. It came bundled with a Miro A/D card in the late 90's. It would always make Windows 98 hang or crash. I gave up on it. Twelve years later even the latest version Premiere hangs! I found Vegas around 2001 and still prefer it over all the others I've tried. Ciao

JohhnyRoy, it's obvious that you like Apple's hardware. I have no problem with that as I've stated before. My question is, what do you like about OS X over Windows 7? Are there some programs that are OS X exclusive that you can't find an equally good Windows program? Obviously Final Cut isn't one of them! Do Adobe's programs work somehow better under OS X than under Windows? Please be as technically specific as possible, phrases like "It a smoother experience" or "It just works" are fine for the computer illiterate, but I'd like to know if there is some advantage that I'm not seeing. I've had a few Apple Mac's in the past and I have one of my computers doing double duty as a Hackintosh so it's not like an Apple hater, I just don't really see the point. If it's just a personal preference like a Coke vs. Pepsi comparison, I can appreciate that, I'd just like to hear any tangible reason you prefer the OS X environment. Thanks for indulging me.

JohnnyRoy aka ~jr aka iJR ;-) Seriously though John, your use of computers is at two different ends of the spectrum. For one you have an $3,000 - $6,000 Apple Mac Pro with dual CPU's for your complex video/graphics needs and a $500 tablet for your portable, simple creative needs. Not everyone, including me, works/shops in that marketplace. Every few years my budget allows me to spend ~$1500 for a new computer with an extremely important caveat, I usually want to keep the monitor I'm using. I just bought a 42" JVC JLC42BC3000. I use it as both a monitor and a TV. I'm going to use it for a while. My previous monitor is a 37" Westinghouse LCD, I still use it for dual monitor video editing. The price for a Mac Pro with dual Xeon Hex CPU's and >32GB RAM and multiple server grade hard drives IS cost competitive with others computers that are similarly configured. I've have priced them. BUT.... Apple simply has nothing in the $1500 price range for me. I can buy or assemble a mini tower computer for $1500 that easily matches and/or or beats the cost effectiveness of the base $2500 Mac Pro. Mac Minis and iMac's simply don't compete in this category. I'm not criticizing your choices, I'm only trying to point out that the solutions for your computing needs are not always optimal for people who have different needs! I would suggest to you that you make a note of this when you discuss computer configurations. I REALLY appreciate your postings here and your Boris tutorials. I just watched the BCC 8 preview. When will BCC 8 for Vegas be available? I hope the upgrade price is low. :-) Nedski

Search for the word Hackintosh, you'll find several web sites that give lots of information on what PC hardware is compatible with OS X and how to put together your own. You can spend as much or as little as you like. You'll have to buy OS X. Avoid a pirated copy. Apple theoretically could sue you for not following their license agreement, but so far they've only gone after companies that sell PC's commercially with OS X installed. IMHO they would have a PR disaster on their hands if they went after an individual. I found NO compelling reason to use the OS X operating system except for software that exclusively written for it. I bought Final Cut Studio just to see what all the hoopla was about. FCP has some nice features but I thought its limitations far outweigh the positives, especially when compared to the functionality and ease of use of Vegas. Apparently Apple agrees with my assessment about FCP, they KILLED the old versions of FCP and completely rewrote it, it's now called Final Cut Pro X. Yes, I know that the older versions of FCP had a lot of features for collaboration by multiple editors, not anymore though. I would speculate that the Asian market for Apple built PC's would be tiny because of the premium Apple charges for their computers. If anything, I think that the Asian markets would be the leader in using Hackintosh's! ;-)

/RANT ON "I run Vegas on my Mac and am quite happy with it." "Vegas is already compatible for Mac! OS X + Bootcamp = Vegas on a Mac" "Once the new Mac Pro's are released with Ivy Bridge later this year, that last Windows PC will get the boot and I'll run bootcamp instead just for Vegas." This is very odd. It seems as if folks don't understand that the only essential thing that makes an Apple Macintosh PC different from PC's manufactured by companies such as Dell or HP is the operating system. They all use Intel (or compatible) CPU's, they all use disk drives, RAM, graphics chips from third parties. Apple, Dell, HP and others all use these core components made by other companies. The major PC manufacturers, including Apple, only add a few finishing touches to the hardware. These finishing touches may please the eye of the beholder but they have a minimal impact, if any, on performance. Apple uses it's own proprietary operating system OS X, the rest use Microsoft Windows. Using the Microsoft Windows OS on an Apple PC does NOT equal "running Vegas on a Mac." It is now a "Windows PC" assembled by Apple Inc. /RANT OFF

I believe that Adobe has written software for Apple since the introduction of the Macintosh. It is probably why some people still say "...Mac is better for graphics." This was true then, I believe it hasn't been true for a long time! Macs are still good, don't get me wrong, I'm not bashing them, I just don't think they have any major advantages over well made Windows computers. I just checked the Amazon sales ranking for Adobe Photoshop, the Windows version is at #45 and the Mac version is at #71. Vegas Movie Studio HD Platinum 11 is ranked #53. So Amazon sells more copies of Vegas Movie Studio than it sells of the Mac version of Photoshop, very interesting! So I agree that it would likely be a waste of resources for SCS to create a Mac version of Vegas. IMHO Sony should include a copy of Vegas Pro with EVERY Sony camcorder over ~$1000 and include Vegas Movie Studio with all camcorders under ~$1000. I think there would be many more converts to Vegas this way!

Current Market Share of NLEs
My totally unscientific way of measuring software sales is to go to Amazon and check the "Amazon Best Sellers Rank:" on each piece of software. Ranking number as of 12:45 AM February 27, 2012 are as follows: Sony Vegas Pro 11 ranks at #1586 Adobe Premiere Pro 5.5 ranks at #1932 (CS5.5 Master Collection ranks at #1060) Apple Final Cut Studio 3 ranks at #846 (I believe Apple only sells FCP X directly via download.) Avid Media Composer 6 ACADEMIC ranks #4227 (I can't find the full version on Amazon.) I wonder and/or doubt if any of these companies tells anyone their sales numbers. I once tried to get a general sense of Adobe PhotoShop sales figures by asking the question on an official Adobe forum and I was rewarded with insults and nasty comments from the forum administrator!

It plays very jerkily with VLC. VLC 1.1.5 reports the frame rate as 119.880119. What camcorder is it from? EDIT: Sony CX700V AVCHD Clip As palm of hand hits forehead SMACK!

OT: What was YOUR first personal computer?
May 1984 - Columbia Data Systems MPC-1600 $2700. I don't have anymore but I still have the receipt. 4.77mHZ 8088, 128k ram, 2 360k 5.25" floppy drives, MS-DOS 1.1 and lots of bundled software. I was researching computers and I heard about Apple's Macintosh, I think it was around the same price. I didn't get the Mac because the answer to the following questions was NO. "Can I use a larger monitor? Can I use a color monitor? Can I add a hard drive? Can I upgrade the RAM? Does it run Flight Simulator?" The Columbia PC, referred as a IBM clone in those days, could do all those things and more. I don't regret my decision even one little bit. :-) My last pre-built PC was a Micron 486. I've built all my desktop PC's since around 1998. I built myself a Hackintosh just to see what all the fuss about Final Cut was... not bad, just not a Vegas killer. ;-)
