Panasonic P2 conversion
That looks good. It costs $195. Anybody try P2Forge? It's only $45 and it supposedly will covert in batch mode. This would be good for me because I'm working with someone who will use iMovie for experiments. He doesn't know how to use anything else. ;-)

Renaming Sony Vegas?? - VOTE!
........ Sony Video Professional ...... Marketing tag - "SVP beats FCP!" Funny thing though, I've had people tell me how much better FCP is than Vegas. I always ask "Have you ever used Vegas?" The answer is always "No." I always follow that with "If you've never used Vegas, why would you say it's inferior to FCP?" Then they either get pissed off or just go quiet. :-( I have FCP as well as Vegas and Premiere. Each has strengths and weakness's. I prefer Vegas.

What's with the Cinescore Shopping Cart? The "Add To Cart" price for a Cinescore theme says $14.39 yet in the Shopping Cart it is $35.98. I went all the way to step four and the price remains at $35.98.

Your Computer Chronology
I bought my first computer in 1985. The choice was between a IBM "clone" and a Macintosh. The question I asked was, "Hmmm... a monochrome display, 128K ram, no hard drive, and cost over $2000. So which one can I upgrade to a color monitor and add a hard drive and more RAM without buying a new computer? Okay, I'll take the IBM clone made by Columbia Data Products please." I am pleased to say that it was a decision that I'm STILL glad I made. ;-) Oh yeah, my second computer was from a small PC maker in Texas by the name of PC's Limited. A guy named Mike Dell started the company out of his college dorm room. I only bought two or thee desktop computers after that. I've been putting together my own PC's from parts since about 1996. P.S. I've used Macintosh's since then, for me there never was any reason to drop Wintel PC's in their favor. Apples stuff is good, just not "better" enough for me.

floating camera
NewBlueFX might have what you're looking for, they have a plug-in called "Active Camera." The plug-in is available in either their "Motion Effects" bundle or their "Sampler Pack." You can get a trial download. The "Sampler Pack" was a bonus available to early up-graders to Vegas 9, that's how I got mine. I went to NewBlue and bought more of their effects packages. :-)

New FX Controls (Alien)
JR, you said "What you need to do is set the length manually when you are in Boris." I've read the documentation a few times and I just can't get it to work! :-( Do you know where there is a comprehensive Boris FX & Vegas for Dummies tutorial? ;-) I've searched the web but I haven't found anything good enough for my puny brain. By BS, I meant that I wish Boris would make a version of their filters to work easier in Vegas either by dumbing them down or making them a lot smarter. And of course they should work with 64 bit Vegas too. I really like how well the Boris chromakey filters work, but I couldn't make them work inside of Vegas. They work easily in After Effects as I mentioned, I just hate using AE for video.

Vegas and other Sony products for MAC
Apple makes some very nice hardware, though they have a very limited selection of models. Basically they have five different laptop computers, the MacBook Air, the MacBook Pro, the Macbook, the MacMini and the iMac. Yup, IMHO the iMac and the Mini are simply less portable laptops! The MacPro is a competitively priced multi-CPU workstation. They have NO desktop single CPU computers with multiple PCIe slots and room for multiple hard drives. This is the platform which I, and many other editors use. Anybody can get a very fast video editing computer for around $1500 sans monitor. The MacPro starts around $3000, at twice the price I'm willing to pay it should run twice as fast, it doesn't! Apple make a good operating system. As does Microsoft. I have Apple FCP Studio. It works just fine but it has no overwhelming advantages over Vegas. I wouldn't really want Sony to port Vegas to OSX until they have dominated the Windows based editors. Adobe and Avid aren't going to give up soon, so I hope that Sony just keeps, ahem... perfecting Vegas. The biggest difference between Apple and the rest of the worlds computer makers is Apple's marketing. Apple has many loyal zombies repeating every marketing phrase Apple makes. 99% of the Mac fanboys I've talked to don't have the slightest idea how a computer works. The first clue of the clueless is when they confuse applications with an operating system and then they confuse it all with the hardware!

New FX Controls (Alien)
Well if you think the NewBlue UI is difficult try using Boris FX filters in Vegas, they're darn near useless to me! I still can't figure out how to preview a Boris FX video in Vegas and I still don't understand even how to get an event's length in Boris. I've read the very terse documentation where Boris mentions how to use the effects in Vegas, they sort of blame Vegas for the difficulties, but that's pretty much BS, NewBlue's filters work seamlessly in Vegas, both 32 AND 64 bit versions! The Boris FX filters are very nice and they work just fine in After Effects. I wish they would work that well in Vegas. I have a love/HATE relationship with After Effects. ;-)

OT: Microsoft to open retail stores
Coursedesign: AE can crash for a lot of reasons, including using 4GB RAM without error correction. Is it the only program crashing? It's the only program I can make crash repeatably, it's not random. Sometimes a warning dialog box will popup letting me know the program is about to tank. When AE memory usage goes over 70% I have to save my project, exit the program, relaunch AE and continue. I've tried mucking with the cache and temp preferences without any big improvement. The Adobe "help" files are often unhelpful. I've searched the web for a better explanation about how to get AE to behave, but I haven't found much. How in the world do people use AE to edit large HD projects? Do they break every thing down to thirty second snippets? Do they all use Mac Pro's with 16GB RAM? Does the Windows version of AE CS4 behave better with large projects? Thanks, Mr CD

I'm using AE CS3 on Vista 64. My computer has 8GB of ram so AE sees and uses 4GB. I've had AE crash several times. I only had a 30 second composition with a dozen 1920x1080 Photoshop bitmaps. Does the OSX version of AE utilize more than 4GB? SOT- IMHO the OSX GUI has absolutely NO superiority to any version of Windows. Having only one pull down menu bar for all applications made sense when the Mac only had a 9" screen but nowadays it's an annoying limitation. Also the OSX Dock is far inferior to the Start menu and Taskbar, it takes up too much screen space and it far less customizable that the Start menu. But I know I'm in the minority because I've never seen anybody customize their Start menu. It's so friggin' easy to do. Oh yes, I do have a computer running OSX 10.5.5 and FCP Studio 2. I got it not because it's "better" I got it because more people in the video business are using it. Oh and another thing, 99% of the people I talk to about computers don't have the slightest idea what they are talking about! Seriously they don't. I met someone who was the proud owner of the "latest Intel G5 MAC." This person also told me "You CAN'T edit video on a PC." OSX and Windows each have annoyances, I don't have to knock Apple's products to justify my preference for Windows! :-)

OT: 8GB Q6700 desktop
So what exactly happens when there is a fault? Please cite specifics, thanks. My computer does not spontaneously reboot or lockup. I have 8GB of DDR2 RAM. It is non-ECC. Basic specs - Vista 64 SP1, Intel Q9450 @ 2.66 GHz, Intel DP35DP mobo, G.Skill PC2-6400 4x2GB, XFX Nvidia 9600 GT 512mb video.

Noisy computer-need suggestions
Eileen, There are lots of videos on YouTube about building PC's. Just now I just typed "build PC" in the search box and there were 67,600 hits. I'm sure at least some of those should be helpful to you. Another web site I just found is http://www.pcmech.com/byopc/ this page has 23 steps. There are really only three things you need to put together a PC. #1 - a phillips screwdriver, #2 - patience, #3 - the ability to install software, #4 - patience. Oh yeah, that four things. ;-) Except for laptops, I haven't bought a pre-made PC since the 1990's. There are several reasons I put them together myself. The biggest one is that most pre-made PC's don't have what the parts I want. Many vendors will customize their computers somewhat but the price gets a lot higher than if I just buy the same parts and do it myself. No, I don't worry about tech support, in the very rare occasions that a parts breaks, I just replace the part myself. Computer parts prices always go down, there are always good prices and they are pretty easy to find.

OT: Real life Dilbert manager quotes
A company I used to work for had photo ID badges for as long as I worked there, almost 15 years. In the late 1990's they put in magnetic badge readers at all the doors and no one was supposed to enter or leave the building without "badging in." They sent out a stern warning e-mail to all the employees. Well, coincidentally enough, that very Friday there was a Dilbert cartoon about photo ID badges. I taped the cartoon to the door of the room I parked my butt in. On Monday the cartoon was gone. The department head called my in and told me "Don't pull up that kind of stuff here, people don't like it!" A true Dilbert moment!

Noisy computer-need suggestions
I put together a Core2Quad PC earlier this year. I have one Nvidia 9600 GT, 8 GB of DDR2 RAM, three Western Digital 640 GB SATA II drives, a LG Blu-Ray burner. I bought a "Antec Sonata Plus 550" Black/ Silver Steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case with a 550W Power Supply. It has lots of fans and it is very quiet. So quiet that most ambient noise in my house drowns out the sound from the PC. I'm six feet away from it and I can barely hear it. It's so quiet that I can fall asleep without it bothering me, the only thing that will bother me is all the lights from all the computer equipment. The blinking lights from my network router and cable modem and the hard drive light are what I'll notice if I wake up in the middle of the night! I was really pleasantly surprised how quiet it turned out to be. P.S. I'm really annoyed by sound when I'm trying to fall asleep, unlike many people, I HATE the sound of rain when I'm trying to snooze! :-)

Capturing Audio in Vegas

Right click on the background of the tab and choose "show disabled devices." 4. Right click on Wave Out (or Stereo) Mix and click enable. 5. Now it should work the same way as Wave Out Mix in Windows XP, allowing you to record any sound your computer makes. In addition, right click on the icon and set the properties to "use this device" and then click on the "set default" button. I just tried it on Vegas 8.0c, Vista 64 and it worked. OT: vegas 8 on linux (please vote)
YES, make Vegas work with Linux and OSX and Solaris and HPUX and AIX and Amiga OS and DOS. AFTER...... Sony has made the Windows version with all the features that have been requested and all the features of all other competing editing/compositing/2D3D effects software and squashes all bugs that crop up during the development. And when their market share is greater than Final Cut and Avid. UNTIL THEN..... Sony shouldn't waste a minute of their resources on porting Vegas, or any of their other software, to other operating systems. :-) Nedski P.S. Can you port Vegas to my HP-41C soon? Questions I should be asking: Vegas vs. FCP
I've had a few days using FCP. In that short time I found some very nice features that I wish Vegas had and also some features that were not so good, such as the audio. Note, I didn't have a chance to use Apples Soundtrack Pro. I don't currently have a Mac, I had an older model for a while but gave it away. I've had PC's for over twenty years. I find both are way more alike than Mac or PC fanboys rant about. Having said that, I would not get FCP and a MAC unless someone or some business offered me enough money to justify spending that kind of money. If I had lots of spare cash I would probably get one just to play with. I wouldn't want anything less than a well equipped Mac Pro. The iMac's and Mini-Mac are not robust enough for serious editing, IMHO. I have the same thoughts about Avid's editing products. There would have to be some sort of overwhelming monetary reason to buy them. Bottom line, having experience with FCP or Avid won't hurt you! BUT, if no one offers you enough business, and you don't have enough time or money to treat them as a hobby or education, stick with Vegas as your primary editing software. Nedski, P.S. I'm currently vying to edit a local indie movie. Their ad said they wanted someone with FCP experience. When I went to the interview, they told me that they really wanted to edit it with Vegas and that I was the only one who answered the ad who even used it!

Edit Canon 5D Clips in Vegas?
I downloaded three files that are straight from the camera. http://www.usa.canon.com/dlc/controller?act=GetArticleAct&articleID=2127 I simply dropped them on the timeline of Vegas 8.1. The preview playback could only manage 3 or 4 frames per second on my Vista 64 Quad2Core 2.66ghzPC. I'm rendered to the Blu-Ray 1920x1080 template. It took about 20 minutes to render the three clips ~ 40 seconds total. Nedski

psst . . . don't tell the SLR guys!
Well sure it's a video camera. Sure it doesn't have all the features of a typical professional HD video camera. I still want it! I'd like to hear from people who have and use pro HD cameras what they think of the samples now available. No arguing about specs please, just judge what samples exists! And please no comparison to Nikon D90 ;-) I'd like to hear how it compares to the image quality of a Sony EX3, just the image quality, not a feature comparison. OT SD cardcams and long scenes
The same "problem" exists with some other camcorders that store the video on flash memory and/or hard drives. I have a Sony HDR-SR7, it has a 60GB hard drive. The same thing occurs as with your Canon. With any recording over 15-17 minutes the camcorder splits it into files of less than 2GB. The solution, which is not documented very well, is to use the included Sony "Picture Motion Browser" software to import the video files to the computer. The software will correctly "stitch" the files together so that there will be one continuous event when placing the file on the Vegas time line. I briefly looked at the Canon Pixela software documentation and it doesn't mention this problem/solution either. I would suggest that you try using the Canon software to transfer the video files instead of copying them with the Windows Explorer. NOTE: The Sony "Picture Motion Browser" is incompatible with the 64 bit version of Windows Vista. I had to re-install Vista twice because the Sony software installed a device driver that would cause the OS to not boot! I don't know if Sony has fixed this or if there is a work-around. So if you have Vista 64, try the Canon software on Vista 32 or XP 32 first. Nedski
