Best Turnkey Vegas/Sound Forge Vista64 PC for $2K?
JohnnyRoy, well you certainly know more that most people and you're right, a server/workstation class computer is certainly better in many respects, especially in a high usage environment, but forum member "Pixelstuff" had a budget of $2,000. HP's workstations and even Apple's Mac Pro (a workstation class PC with a Unix variant OS) starting price is well over $2K, closer to $5K when well equipped. That's why I, and apparently you as well, choose to build our own, this way we get what we really want/need/ or can afford! The HP my friend got was their top of the line consumer grade PC. It seemed reasonably well equipped for a consumer wanting good performance. Nedski

Best Turnkey Vegas/Sound Forge Vista64 PC for $2K?
Hey JohnnyRoy, what "parts"are better and how are they better. Really, I'd like to know. I mean do they state exactly which parts they use? Please be specific! Looking at HP's description of their XW4600 workstation, the only difference I can see is that they use ECC RAM. They don't give any real details about what/why their workstation would be a better choice. The reason I'm so very skeptical is because I worked in a company where some of the people would say "Any workstation is better than any PC..." When I asked them to give some evidence for this claim they NEVER gave any rational response! One guy, with a doctorate in computer science no less, said "Because this computer says "workstation" on it, that's why it's better." I knew why some computers are "better" than others. Most people don't have a clue. Sorry for the rant, I'm just looking for people who have useful knowledge and are willing to share it. Nedski P.S. A friend of mine, with a EE Masters degree, didn't want to put together a PC like quite a few of us here on the forum do. So he bought the following PC from HP. It's here.....DVD A 5
Well.. I made a Blu-Ray disc with DVDA 5. No problems. The 41 minute video took less than hour to render in Vegas8.0b. I put in 66 chapter markers. It took about 42 minutes to create the disc. I gave up on animated (motion) buttons though, it would have taken four hours for DVDA 5 to render them! So I went with 66 static chapter buttons. I burned it to an LG BD-RE 2x disc. The burner is an LG GGW-H20L. My PC is has a Intel Q9450 2.66ghz CPU, 8GB DDR2800 RAM and Windows Vista64. My video source is a Sony HDR-SR7. Nedski P.S. Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that it plays fine on my PC using Cyberlink PowerDVD Ultra. I don't have a set top Blu-Ray player.

I just downloaded and installed it. No smoke or flames... yet ;-) I rendering (in Vegas) a 41 minute Blu-Ray, 1440x1080, 25mbps project right now in preparation for DVD 5. I added over sixty chapter markers, I want to see if DVD 5 will choke on a boatload of motion menus! My new Core2Quad PC is now going to earn it's keep. Nedski42

Terje, So what, if any, tweaks for Vista 64 made Vegas happy? Or is your 8.0b running without any issues? Be they serious or just annoying. I'm planning on finishing my current video project on my old XP computer than copying it to the Vista PC and seeing if it survives the process! I have been reading about making tweaks to Vista, but if you know of any that make a difference with Vegas, I'd appreciate it. Vegas is my most valuable application. Thanks, Nedski

But Terje old pal, don't you want to run Vegas 64 when it ships??? Will it run on XP 64? Almost all of my external hardware has Vista drivers. The only one that doesn't work is a Mustek scanner. The driver barely works with XP! Have you read much about how Windows 7 will be "better" than Vista? Other than a new marketing scheme from the boys in Redmond? ;-) Nedski

Oh, one more thing, my new PC has Vista 64 installed vs my old PC with XP SP2 installed. The new PC has a Core2 QUAD 2.66ghz, 8GB DDR2 RAM, Vista 64. The old PC has a Core2 DUO 2.66ghz, 4gb DDR2 RAM, XP SP2. I ran John Cline's HDV render test. The old PC took 4 minutes, the new PC took 2 minutes. I haven't done any serious tweaks on either PC. As Terje mentioned, you should make sure that there are Vista drivers for ALL your critical hardware, including BIOS updates if needed! Nedski

Terje, Since the original poster of this thread asked to “config my new Vista computer for Vegas” it is distinctly unhelpful to start by calling Vista a “disaster.” Making a blanket statement calling Windows Vista a "disaster" without qualifying the statement is as close to fear mongering as can be! Make a freakin' list of who is affected by the differences between XP (or any other OS, you too Macfanboys!) and Vista. There are distinct sets of users. 1. Corporate computer users. 2. Corporate IT departments. 3. Small business users. 4. The small business IT person, who usually is multitasking! 5. The individual user. 6. ????? There are also a few distinct hardware scenarios as well. A. The user of new computers, ones that have the latest OS installed. B. The user of older computers, ones that have an older OS installed. C. ????? I've advised, since the days of Windows 95, that individual computer users avoid installing a newer version of an OS over a previous version. The bigger the OS jump, such as trying to install Win XP over Win 95 is just asking for trouble! I usually suggest that the individual either buy a new computer with the latest OS installed or they buy a new hard disc for their old computer and install the new OS on it. My advice for the individual is multiplied many times for business's large and small. So my take on Vista is, for an individual computer user, that the difference between XP and Vista will be usually matters of annoyances of varying levels As Terje correctly points out, the differences between XP and Vista for corporate users and IT departments can be very significant! Vista might be a “disaster” for Microsoft Sales because corporations are hesitant to upgrade thousands of computers, but that doesn't mean squat for an individual computer user! ;-) P.P.S I've just put together a new PC with Vista, it works fine, but I'm going to shut off that really annoying UAC security feature!

OT: TDK BD-R $4.99 Circuit City
Update # 2 I checked the Trumbull, CT CC for some of these discs. The web site listed them in stock. Got there.... nope, not a one. :-( I just tried printing on a disc. It does not look good at all. It's all beaded up and runny. I have an Epson R1800. Oh well, life sux... then they won't let you die. Nedski

OT: TDK BD-R $4.99 Circuit City
UPDATE...... I dropped by the Danbury, CT store and found two on the shelf, so I bought them. There weren't anymore in stock. :-( Craftech, not only did I check the link you provided (thanks again, BTW) but I printed out the web page and brought it with me to the store. I now do this often because I've been been to some stores that will deny knowledge of prices on their own web site! Wasn't there a class action lawsuit against BB for this evil, evil, practice? ;-) It appears to me that the surface of these TDK discs are printable. The surface is matte white with the TDK logo on a portion of it, but the rest of the surface seems to be usable. Has anyone tried printing on one of these discs? Nedski P.S. I hope this is the beginning of a Blu-Ray media price war!

Camcorder for College Level Video courses
TheHappyFriar said... "I just can't recommend a camera over $500." Well, the Canon Vixia HV30 can be had for under $800 from Amazon or B&H. That's not too far from TheHappyFriairs $500 limit. It's an excellent camcorder. I've myself have sworn off tape based camcorders! I have a Sony HDR-SR7. A big part of the equation for you is what/where/how the video will be edited. Both HDV and AVCHD demand a fast computer and compatible software. If you get the Canon HV30 you can shoot in standard definition DV if your editing environment is not advanced enough to handle HD. OT: Why premium cables cost so much
Coursedesign, please stick to audio. Your straw man arguments about drugs do not make your ideas about cables more credible, they do just the opposite! Also, please don't fall into the parallel discussion about amplifiers, keep on the subject please. Now tell us please, which audio interconnect cables have you tested? Please tell us the manufacturer and model number. What is "cheap" vs. "expensive" cables. I would really like some cold, hard data. Do you really think there would be any audible difference between Monster Cable's "Standard Interlink 100" at $10 per meter vs. their "Sigma Retro Gold" at $1000???? I'd imagine that being skeptical about a 100 to 1 price ratio would be normal, even for the most deluded person on the planet. C'mon, tell us all, inquiring minds want to know.

Cables for speakers only need to be of adequate thickness copper for the current. Double the thickness if you wish, just don't be an idiot to pay hundreds or even thousands of dollars for those magic "audiophile" cables. If you want to see how deceptive it can get, read about James Randi's attempts to get one manufacturer of these so called "audiophile" cables to submit to a double blind testing. http://www.randi.org/joom/content/view/102/2/ Randi offered them one million dollars if they could prove their cable were superior to even those over priced Monster speaker cables. Oh yeah, I certainly know that when a high frequency analog signal in the megahertz to gigahertz range is run through wire, the AC impedance of the cable can have a drastic effect on said signal. The AC impedance of a copper wire is almost negligible at audio frequencies, only the DC resistance is of concern.

Then at the last minute, M$ changed parts of the WDM to make room for changes to MP11 and a different DRM structure. This broke many of the drivers that were in development effectively burning the OEM's with developments costs that could not be recovered and making them start from scratch. I don't believe it's the OEM's fault because M$ can't make up their (collectively lost) mind." - - - - - - - - Well, if Microsoft did that, shame on them! Bad, bad Microsoft.... bad, badder, baddest DRM! However, I'd like to know how all that screwing up affected the usability of PC's shipped with Vista installed? Well, this revealing of Microsoft's and PC makers mistakes in marketing Vista as an UPGRADE to PC's being sold with Windows XP is probably well deserved. HOWEVER, what about PC's sold with Vista already installed??????? How many of these PC's are problematic? Is Dell, HP, Toshiba, Gateway and others selling PC's with Vista installed and they don't work? I for one do not blame Microsoft for not having drivers for every piece of hardware. It is up the the hardware makers to have drivers ready for Vista. I think all hardware makers should have Vista drivers for their current, not discontinued, products. The development of Vista was not a secret, was it? I also believe that all software makers should have made their current products Vista compatible. Of course, that includes Sony Creative Software! These two scenarios are vastly different and the difference should always be emphasized by critics. These kinds of problems with upgrading operating systems is why I always advocate installing a new OS "clean" and not trying to "upgrade" over the previous OS!

Cyberlink PowerProducer HD-DVD
So Laurence, I'm trying Ulead as you suggested. You have used this software I assume. I'm not having much success, though it seems more hopeful than the Cyberlink software. I guess since no one answered my original question about Cyberlink Power Producer, no one has even tried it. Could you please give detailed information on what Vegas rendering options you use and if there are any options in the Ulead software that help? Nedski
