H.264 out of Vegas 9/10
Thanks all, much appreciated. Had to ask 'cos I'm getting so many requests from clients that have Macs and keep saying (in their technology ignorance) that they will only play H.264's in Quicktime Player. I'm tired of doing the 'export out uncompressed and re-import into QTPro' to get these files so was trying to see if there was a way to get it straight out of VPro. Quoka

Who Has a Deckilnk HD Extreme Card
Got 3 HD extremes. They all work with 8.0c and 9.C - beautifully! Win7 & XP64. Must be PCIe bus and 64bit Trick (I think) is to re-install the decklink drivers after you've installed Vegas. (or was that the other way around?) Don't give up. Interested if anyone has Blackmagics new Decklink Studio working as its a much cheaper option.

new Core i5 build = audio dropouts
This sounds similar to issues we had with Vista - think it had to do with the O/S having to keep perfect sync between Audio and Video using a windows command (this is very general info as I can't remember exactly) and if it couldn't keep sync it would give drop-outs . We tracked it down and turned off the setting - again I can't remember where/how as I'm not the sys admin guy. If you want me to pursue some more info let me know and I'll go hunting. Thing that is strange to is that its on XP.

Forum Poll: Which Version of Vegas?
8.0c - it has Decklink working 9.0b - when I need RED Means I have to Edit RED in 9.0b and then render out to see it on SDI from 8.0c. Not a great workflow but it works....

Black Magic DeckLink or DeckLink HD Extreme
cspvideo: If you are content to to use vegas8c, you can capture directly into Vegas via the Decklink cards. We use batch capture from VTR decks and this works without any problems. As it was said in one of the other replies, you would probably find it easier to just use the capture utility that comes with the card - in Blackmagics case - Media Express. (this will also output to tape as well) BTW make sure you have Hard Drives that can sustain HD capture. We use striped 2x500GB standard sata drives and get 200MB per sec. which is easily enough for what you want. Only reason I'm pushing BM cards is that we have so many of them, and the thought of paying for a whole heap of much more expensive AJA cards doesn't appeal.

Black Magic DeckLink or DeckLink HD Extreme
We have HD Extremes and SD cards. We use them everyday, all day, for monitoring to SDI monitors and output to SDI tape decks, with Vegas. They work flawlessly with 8c (after copying the files to the correct directories - search forum for how to set them up). They were 'officially'(?) supported under version 7d, but not 8 or 9. But can be made to work correctly under 8c. Currently I believe they can't be made to work under V9, but I hope, if the whisper I hear is true, that Blackmagic & Sony are maybe trying to get them working again. They are a brilliant combination, and for the folk that work more in the HD - DVD area, the Intensity card would be ideal. 'Tis very frustrating presently to be held back from editing in our current workflow with V9. Vegas keeps looking for "Pro" status, but until they get a good cheap SDI workflow it struggles to achieve it.

I have NEVER been so angry...
I cannot believe anyone in the world would be so blind (to put it kindly) as to not do incremetal saves (as per Ethan). I have ten people work for me on Maya-Combustion-Vegas-AEX etc and if anyone of them ever came to me and said they have lost days of work because they don't have a version from 10 minutes ago they would be sacked on the spot. We have projects that have 3 to 400 incremental saves. Now that doesn't excuse SCS for not putting a simple incremental save button on the top of the workspace - AS HAS BEEN ASKED FOR OVER & OVER AGAIN BY MANY PEOPLE. It would be so easy to write the code for it - and not be forced to use a 3rd party script. SCS - LOOK AT COMBUSTIONS IMPLEMENTATION OF INCREMENTAL SAVE AND GET OFF YOUR HIGH HORSE- WE ARE THE ONES THAT USE YOUR SOFTWARE _ NOT YOU!

"The documentation for V9 states you can use a BMD SDI card for preview." Can someone point me to where it says this?

Blackmagic-Design HD SDI
We have been running multple Decklink HD Extreme cards on a couple of Dual Quadcore Xeons, and a Single Quadcore PC. They work flawlessly with 8.0c(32bit) but don't seem to be supported in 8.1 64 bit. We just installed 9.0 (32 & 64) and neither appear to have any internal support for Decklink. We re-installed the Decklink drivers hoping this may do it - but alas it still doesn't show up. We are hoping(big-time) that either SCS or Blackmagic write drivers for 9.0 as we have invested heavily with Blackmagic hardware and don't relish the thought of now having to buy AJA cards. BTW it looks like AJA only have support within the 32bit version of V9. If anyone has had any success with getting Decklink/Intensity to work in 9.0 can you let us know. Cheers

Render crashes anyone?
I've got to add my two-pennies worth to Bob's comments - We use Vegas for full Broadcast output for national TV. Flaky AAF, No EDL and lack of full support for Decklink are the only things stopping this app from being a fully professional NLE. We have a stream of clients coming in watching us work on Vegas and they are incredibly impressed with its speed and ease of use, but every time they talk about interchangeable files with other facilites I have to put my tail between my legs and tell them it doesn't have industry standard interchangeable formats. These clients are in and out of other facilities using Avid/FCP/Flame/Pro-Tools/Fairlight,Premiere etc. and just expect us to be able to 'exchange' with these. I have no intention of jumping ship, but you would think that for Sony to have its name in front of Vegas they would address these points.

9.0 Render times with Render test HD boost!
Just did the render test - basically 2x as fast as my last results!! 38 seconds. Dual quadcore Xeons, 8GB RAM. SH......T!!!! its fast.

Free AAC Colorlab plugin rocks!
This plugin more than rocks!! Just did realtime Colour Correction & Glow FX on Standard Definition - playback realtime.... hopefully this is start of things to come. Many thanks to Carl Ådahl!!!!

Xpx64 vs Vista 64 network speed
We are running Vista Ultimate SP1, with VP8.0c &8.1. This doesn't sound like others are experiencing this slow down on a network.

NEW Rendertest-HDV.veg
2 x Xeon Quads - 2.8Ghz 8 GB Ram Striped dual sata's QFX 1700 etc - pretty much the same set up as "xstr8guy" except slightly slower cpus. 8.0c - 63 seconds 8.1 - 54 seconds (16 threads) Bang for buck the i7's seem to be better value - but for sheer grunt the Xeons still seem to reign. I've run the test a few times and checked the settings and these times are correct.

Working with HD files slow?
I also have a new twin quad core Xeon, Vista64, with 8GB RAM, same graphics card.... and guess what..... my older dual core w/ XPx64 plays back files better as well. What have Intel/MS done that we get faster/more cpu's but slower playback.... very confusing/frustrating.

PDW-700 XDCam HD422 performance question
I'm using XDCam HD422 files on a system spec'd like yours(its a dual core opteron). I can playback at 20-25fps in preview mode. I turn the Video RAM to "0" so its not trying to put any video into it. I also have read off a local 4xscsi drive striped array. I have been watching the cpu's and they never seem to go above 50% - this could mean that only one cpu/core can be used at a time(it makes sense). As we all know XDCamHD422 compression is heavily crunched down - so it takes a lot of grunt to decode and display. I use 2 x Dell 24inch LCD's, but like to run my project and Video preview window at 1024x576 (this may possibly help with decoding & fps - not sure though) - this gives me plenty of image to look at without having to sit back from my desk to view the entire screen. I also pump the image out via "video preview on external monitor" - via SDI Decklink to a SDI CRT - this gives me the best of all worlds. Good to hear about others using this camera/workflow. Now if I could just get XDCam HD422 - 8.1 - 32 bit colourspace - Decklink - all working without freezes ......... nirvana.

Thanks Bob, I took your advice "....to the letter?" The problem was(yes its working) - Camera Hire place gave me only one software disk - application software for browsing the unit. I needed a separate disk/file to install the drivers. It only works on 32bit XP, and the browsing software only partly works, but lo and behold Vegas works a treat with its XDCAM Explorer window. It is so easy and intuitive. We are now working with full HD 1920 422 files. On my 3 year old multicore PC I get 20 - 24 fps playback (it was shot at 25p). Pics look amazing, colour grading works a treat -very happy vegemite.

Slightly OT, but still relevant... I posted a question re. XDCAM HD422 yesterday - got some helpful answers to work flow. BUT still can't get the process happening. XDCAM HD422 shot on XDCAM PDW-700 camera - to optical disk. To read the disk I have the standalone unit PDW-U1 which connects via USB2.0. Sony supply a FAM driver(software) so that your computer sees the drive as an Optical disk drive. I have 2 diff XP SP2 PC's with this loaded and I still can't get the PDZ-1 Proxy Browser software or Vegas XDCAM explorer to recognize the Unit(PDW-U1). Its like XP won't recognize the FAM driver, hence the software can't see the unit. Has anyone been able to connect to this unit from a PC(not MAC)??

Good vs Best render for rendering to NTSC DV avi ?
I agree totally with JohnMeyer. I have done test after test looking at the difference of Preview-Good-Best, and done quite exhaustive picture comparisons on a broadcast monitor.(I'm looking at this monitor all day) I am forever changing the settings based upon what I want to achieve for the final output, a couple of days ago I output a TVC at preview quality to Digibeta 'cos it gave me the sharpest image, without any defects in motion or jaggies. I had prepared all the graphics at exactly the correct resolution and position in photoshop b4 taking them into Vegas, so I didn't have to resize etc. What does bewilder me, with some source footage being exactly the same as the project setting & no effects or moves applied, Best softens the image - I'm still trying to work out if Vegas is treating some types of source footage different - like it having an imbeded colourspace that forces the output to be recomputed, not just passed through.
