Contour Shuttle Pro Settings? Where?
Excellent. Glad someone had the information you needed. I'm probably misunderstanding things, but it sounds like you're going about this backwards. The Control Panel for the shuttle comes with settings for AP6. They're included with the Shuttle driver installation. You shouldn't have needed to install AP6 to get a set of Shuttle settings, I think. You're right, the forum looked a bit dead. That's what happens when you have a product that really doesn't need updating. There's not much for people to talk about.

Issue with VP15 staying in memory after closing
30 minutes might be about right. I was occasionally watching the processes in task manager while doing other things and eventually Vegas150.exe disappeared from the list. Maybe I should also keep an eye on FileIOSurrogate, but I'm not going to sit here and watch it today. (I probably will now that I've said that.) I'm thinking faster RAM and HDDs shouldn't make a difference of tens of minutes unless some component of Vegas is looping faster than it can catch the condition that ends the loop. I filed a support request before posting here so that box is checked.

There's also some promise of user settings being shared on their forum. That might be what you're thinking of. http://forums.contourdesign.com/ <edit> I just clicked around in the ContourDesign forum and didn't see new settings files. I'd copying old settings to apply to new software versions.

Trouble sorting out codecs in VP15
Well, I had a copy of TSMuxer stashed away so I dusted it off and tried both a quicktime YUV422 and a ProRes file in it. For the ProRes it said it couldn't read the tracks, and for the YUV422 file it just shrugged it's shoulders and gave up with an empty dialog box. Reading the notes on it I think the only quicktime it can handle is mp4 in quicktime. No joy there, but thanks for nudging me to look at it.

Hey Grazie, do you mean settings beyond all the legacy settings included in the Shuttle Pro control panel? I just reinstalled it about an hour ago and applied old VP13 settings to VP15. Seems to work but then all I really needed was the wheels on my Xpress.

Not enough time or brain capacity on my hands, unfortunately, so I forget things I knew a year ago. Thanks for the reminder about TSMuxer.I think what you were doing was taking a quick glance at the output text, seeing bits, seeing 16, and saying "ah-Hah!" because you expected to see a bit depth field that wasn't there. So here's a snip of output from a plain 8-bit uncompressed AVI clip. Yes, MediaInfo picks up the Bit Depth for this one. It also shows average Bits per Pixel as 24, or 8-bits per channel for every pixel, which is what i was trying to say earlier (and failing as 422 refers to how often those U and V values are sampled, not that they're sampled at 4-bits. The average still comes out to 16 bits per pixel.) Frame rate : 59.940 FPSBit depth : 8 bitsBits/(Pixel*Frame) : 24.000

Hi Jam_One. Renaming the Quicktime YUV422 file as an AVI allowed Vegas to load it into a project but only audio plays. Not surprising as Vegas knows what to do with the audio stream but not the video stream. Also, Windows media player did the same thing, playing the audio while ignoring the video. I guess I'd never tried that. Playing the audio without the video is also what Vegas would do if it were using quicktime to play the .mov file, so I think this is pretty normal. Luckily I can transcode it to something else that Vegas can use. MusicVid, I'm not trying to give you a hard time. The 16-bit idea seemed plausible until I realized the MediaInfo field I was looking at wasn't saying the file was using 16-bit color. So I'm sincere in asking you what you meant and what fields were leading you to that conclusion?

Okay, this isn't really helpful or useful. The file is 8-bit per channel. The mediaInfo field I cited isn't referring to bit depth per channel so you must be looking at something else in the mediaInfo output. I don't know what that is but it's not "Bits/(Pixel*Frame)". (there is a Bit Depth field with a value of 16, but it's in the audio section so I doubt that's what you're looking at) After a bit of testing I determined that VP15 won't open that file's video stream even if it's using the QT plugin. So the workaround is to batch convert the media if I want to use it in Vegas. The BMD UltraStudio HD Mini appears to just output a raw stream over Thunderbolt. The capture software is in charge of encoding the file and the choices are very limited 8-bit YUV 422 uncompressed was just the least-bad choice, evidently. As for us feeding it the BMD box 720p SDI, it's enough for our purposes. In any case I don't personally need to interface with the BMD hardware so that's not my problem. My problem was just an unreadable file. The solution was for me to batch convert everything into something Vegas 15 could use. I was just hoping someone had some useful insight. Okay, I think I need to write-off that 16-bit answer. MediaInfo appears to be reporting 16 bits per uncompressed pixel but with 422 sampling that'd be 8bits+4bits+4bits = 16bits. In other words it's 8 bit color depth. Nothing exotic. So more likely this is just a matter of it being a quicktime codec that VP15 isn't using. For my purposes I can drop the entire folder into Adobe's media encoder and batch convert them to something Vegas likes. I'm not making a movie, I'm just reviewing footage and outputting stills. I'm not going to worry about transcoding when it's painless. Next question is whether VP13 should be able to decode ProRes as ProRes is what they'll inevitably provide. If not then maybe I should upgrade to VP15.

Actually, MV, maybe you could explain to me the 16-bit detail. For a Prores 422 LT file that VP15 can open, MediaInfo reports: Bits/(Pixel*Frame) : 1.864 For the YUV 422 file, MediaInfo reports: Bits/(Pixel*Frame) : 16.000 I assume this is the info you're using to say that the file is 16-bit, but 16-bits per what? Fairly obviously MediaInfo isn't referring to bit depth here.

I did a quick scan of the Blackmagic post results. I'm not actually connecting to one of their devices, I'm just getting video from someone who used one for live capture. They've got issues to sort out of their own as the files are too big to do a rush backup at the end of the shoot day. 16 bitness is part of the problem, but they're also uncompressed. Not my circus but I'm still stuck with the monkeys. In any case I can find workarounds while gently encouraging them to solve their capture problem. I see a lot of mention on the forum that VP13 should read ProRes. That's not my experience so far but if it did I could save my money and skip the upgrade. Or just grease my elbows and dig in to PPro rather than fight it.

Thanks MV. Yeah, I saw the 16 bitness. Oddly PPro claims it's 8-bit but maybe that's because the project is 8-bit. Or it's lying. Or both. I don't see the reference to level 6. Is that knowledge in your head or information in the text? I'll follow the Blackmagic thread.

I think it'd be a different story if you could say that you've completed a handful of short films on FCP and a handful on Vegas Pro. Then your opinion would have some weight. I work for some people who've completed and sold a handful of feature length docs. They can edit, but they've always brought in a professional editor for the jobs because a) The editors don't produce so they have a lot more time logged editing and b) they bring another perspective to the project. These men and women almost always can work in more than one edit environment (although Vegas never comes up in the conversation). For a producer, a big consideration is that the editor should be replaceable if necessary. They may quit, you may fire them, they may die, you may kill them. Whatever happens, you want them editing in an environment where they can find another editor. By the same token, if you're an editor you may want to work in an environment that would allow you to replace yourself. You may want to quit at the same time they want to fire you. If you can recommend a replacement you can then bow out gracefully without reputational damage.

the next question would be what is the last most stable 32bit version Dunno. Vegas 4? (Seriously, the 32bit versions have addressable memory ceilings and give you just enough rope to hang yourself.)

New User Interface for New Vegas Pro
- 1 regarding Microsoft's Ribbon bar. It's horrible. I'm STILL trying to find things on it. What has it been, 5 years? I'm never going to memorize the various ribbons. I'm never going to try. I remember when the SCS team (or was it Sonic Foundry) simply tried to add some color to the interface. Many forum users dubbed it a "Hello Kitty" interface and raised holy he** about it. Personally, while I wouldn't mind a better look, what I think would be most useful is basic functionality improvements. Like being able to grab at the intersection of three windows and adjust all of their sizes at the same time. Or some sort of iconic indication in the Project Media window to show that media has mediaFX applied. VMP's example illustrates something that's always bugged me about the track view. You can choose a color for the track header button. Why? It would have more of a reason for being if it made the whitespaces of your track media actually match that color. But then the Hello Kitty Resistance would need a switch to turn the clip coloring back off.

I am confused, do we have TWO accounts
Maybe there are two accounts. I think I was being told that my account had successfully migrated, but when I look at Grazie's profile I see his tens of thousands of posts counted. Mine shows the handful I've made today, and my old handle (nickname) seems to be taken. Probably by my migrated account. So, yes, I guess there are two. <edit> Okay, I went back again to my confirmation email and clicked the migration link again. This time it worked and I am once again rmack350. Maybe I should update that username to rmack550 next year when/if I hit 55.</edit>

I didn't have to be signed on through the Magix site first. However, their migration instructions... fine, but I spent a bit of time going back to them to be sure I was doing what they instructed. Not that they were confusing, just that there was room for doubt.

I think the forum doesn't have links to Magix websites...yet. It appears to still be a work in progress. As for the pics, you can set that up in your profile. And as for two accounts, I suppose if you had previously set up a Magix account and also migrated your SCS account today then you might have two accounts.

No, but there is a language setting for German. You might have accidentally ticked it, or they might still be fooling with defaults for the pages.
