Sound levels and mix for festival submission
Yes, that's the target for broadcast, but what should be the target for cinema? And if it's going to end up on a streaming service like Amazon, is that a different target, or would that be considered "broadcast"? Since I don't know where this film will ultimately end up, is it best to mix each segment to some standard of -3db peaks or such, and then in my final master project, adjust the final mix to match the target? I've only ever put things up on YouTube or made DVDs before so this whole film festival/streaming service world is new to me.

Vegas Alternatives
I'm looking into Resolve. It looks really interesting, and it seems like they are actively working on adding new features. I've been with Vegas since 3.0, but it seems like they haven't fixed some basic things (like media management) in a long time, and I'm really needing those features now as I get into more long-form work.

Is Canon C100 MKII a good choice?
Martin, I've only used AVCHD. I haven't tested working with MP4 in Vegas, but when I get a chance I'll try it out. My understanding (from a limited reading about on the internet) is that the quality between the two is comparable, with a slight edge going to AVCHD. So, I just settled on AVCHD and have used that when I don't need to really do any grading in post. If you are going to do any serious grading, you will want an external recorder. Adding a Ninja to a C100 puts it in the ball park with a C300 mk i in terms of quality. It is a bit of a pain to have more gear to carry but for what I'm doing I really needed the boost in quality. If you just want to run and gun without a lot of fuss and minimal grading in post, then using AVCHD/MP4 with WDR is a fine choice. If you use CLog, you WILL have to grade in post. It is extremely flat looking - no contrast, low saturation, and doesn't look good right from the camera. Another nice feature they introduced in the MK ii is there is an actual on-camera mic now for doing scratch audio, without having the handle attached. The next step up is to attach a 1/8" mic like a Rode Videomic Pro to the hot shoe on the camera. Next step is to attach the camera handle with the 2 XLR jacks and then you can use things like wireless mics and better shotguns.

Is Canon C100 MKII a good choice?
I have a Canon C100 MKII and I love it. I also have a Canon XF305 and the C100 is a big jump up in quality. I often have to shoot in less-than-ideal lighting and the C100 footage holds up very well even when pushed to 10,000 ISO. (I was always frustrated with how grainy the footage from the XF305 looked in low light and always had to use Neat Video in post to clean it up.) I shoot in AVCHD but rarely edit with that. I bought a Atomos Ninja external recorder and the quality from using that (it's Apple ProRes) is better than the AVCHD recorded internally. Editing with either AVCHD or ProRes is much smoother than dealing with the MXF format that the Xf305 output. I shoot almost exclusively in CLog and do grading in Vegas using Magic Bullet.

Anybody using virtual OS's for Vegas?
Does using Vegas in a VM support external audio interfaces? I have a Presonus Audiobox USB that I would want any of the VM's to be able to use. How about multiple monitors? Is that supported?

How to get Video from iPhone?
I use an app on the iPhone called "Image Transfer - photo and video transfer app over wifi". It lets you use a web browser on the PC to transfer images/video between the iPhone and your computer. Using bins: project takes forever to load
I have the media manager installed, but I can't figure out how to make it work with subclips. My project has 10 long actual clips that I need to slice into many short (few seconds) clips. Is there a way to do that in Media Manager?

Using bins: project takes forever to load
So, it appears that bins are basically broken. I created an empty project, with no media at all. I just created 30 empty bins, saved the project and reopened it. It hangs trying to open it. This happens on two different machines, one running Vegas 12 and one Vegas 13.

What mouse do you use to edit with
I use a Microsoft Wireless Notebook Optical Mouse 3000. I like it because it has a clicky scroll wheel so I get tactile feedback when zooming in and out on the timeline.

How do I "flip" over a portion of a clip?
At first I tried the 3D blind transition, but it didn't work right because my clips weren't centered, so they rotated funny. Then, I figured out it could be done if I did things in this order (say I am trying to flip clip A into clip B, and both of them are supposed to be on the left third of the screen): 1. Use Event Pan/Crop Mask tool to select the exact cropping I want on each clip (a third of the frame) 2. Use Event Pan/Crop Position (with Size About Center off) to slide each clip to be centered on the screen, making sure they are exactly the same size, and exactly center. 3. Overlap clip A and clip B on the same track, apply 3D Blinds Spin. 4. Use Track Motion to slide the whole thing to the left (or right), so, instead of centered, the clip shows up in the third of the screen I want. Thanks for the suggestion.

How do I "flip" over a portion of a clip?
I figured out how to do it using 3D Track Motion. There's an option to disable - "Edit in object space", and then I can use the X offset under "Rotation" to move the plane of rotation over to where I need it. Then, when I rotate about the Y axis, it rotates around the center of my video slice, rather than the center of the whole frame.

How do I "flip" over a portion of a clip?
Yes, that is similar to what I am trying to do. Are each of your squares a separate track, with each square a whole screen (just shrunk down with Track motion)? My problem is that because of my masking and cropping, each track has only a small visible portion showing. So, in my example, I have Track 1 that is cropped and positioned to take up the left third of the screen, track 2 takes up the center third, and track 3 takes up the right third. What I really want is to be able to move the point of rotation on each track so it is centered on that visible portion, not on the center of the screen.

Can't see transition durations with grouped events
I like to expand the tracks when adjusting the crossfades - I find I can hit the correct edge easier, and I like having the visual reference to the audio track below. Unfortunately, if you've grouped your events together, it won't show you the transition duration, unless you click "Ignore event grouping" first. To me, that's a bug - it should always show you the duration, regardless of whether things are grouped or not. Good reminder about dropping the transition on the cut - I'd forgotten about that.

You Tube playback mystery
Who's your ISP? That was happening to me almost every night. Things would be fine during the day, and that at night, it's like someone put the brakes on YouTube, with exactly the symptoms you are describing. In the morning, everything would be fine. When I googled it, a lot of other people were seeing the same thing. The ISP's won't admit it, but I think they intentionally throttle some traffic.

OT: YouTube 3rd party content issue
When your video matches third party content, the third party gets to decide what happens to your video - they can ask that nothing happens, they can have your video pulled, or they can monetize it. If they monetize it, people will see ads when your video is played. If they have it pulled, your account can have a negative mark against it. Too many copyright violations and your account can be suspended. In my experience, deleting the videos is sufficient, and I doubt you will hear from anyone.

Also try hitting Shift+F11. Look in the Help for Keyboard shortcuts and search for ones dealing with track list. They're all ones dealing with F11.

NeatVideo Pro: Get it 4 Vegas or CS3 AE/Premiere?
John, why do you say "...or the less desirable method of checking the box in the NV plugin"? Seems to me that's pretty easy and that's the way I've always done it - in fact, I have a FX preset with it checked and I just always use that one. Is there a downside to doing it that way?

I filmed a fascinating lecture on the differences between men and women's brains and how that affects how we should be teaching our children. Basically, women have a whole lot more going on up there than us guys. I told my partner (a woman) that's my excuse for why I'm such a Neanderthal at times... my brain is pretty much just idling...

Track Motion lost after event deleted
Couldn't you have used the "Take" functionality to simply right-click and drag a new piece of media onto your existing event, thereby preserving all the attributes and keyframes?

New Blue Title 2: Positioning objects in Z space
NormanPCN, try this and see if it doesn't work as I've described. On the Vegas timeline: 1. Track 1 has "Text 1" event. 2. Track 2 has "Text 2" event, just below the event on Track 1. Text1 is now in front of Text2 because it is higher in the track hierarchy. 3. Set Track Motion on both tracks to "3D Source Alpha". 4. Set the Z position of Track 1 to some positive number, say 100. Text 1 is now behind Text 2, even though it is higher in the track hierarchy.

I guess I assumed it would work the way I described because if I make two separate tracks in Vegas and set the Track Motion to "3D Source Alpha", I can move them in Z-space and they do change positions relative to each other, regardless of the order in the timeline. Oh well - I guess i can just change how they're stacked to solve my problem.
