Default in Render not working
It's the latest version Vegas Pro 13. Windows 7 The renders work fine. It's just that when I'm done rendering a file (let's say to an AVI master), the program doesn't return to AVI. Rather it goes wherever it feels like (MPEG2). It's aggravating.

Export DNxHD using AVID codec- INSTALLATION??
John Rofrano - once again I would like to THANK YOU for an outstanding tutorial. We have known each other for many years, and through that time I have called on you for advice and guidance. You never let me down and this tutorial is a clear example of your thoroughness and teaching skills. On another page someone asked if any "professional editors" used Vegas. Well, I have been using Vegas exclusively since version 3. I have found it to be fast and all-inclusive. I've completed two features and hundreds of national commercials with it. It has been my main tool in the winning of dozens of national awards. I am able to accomplish virtually all effects without having to resort to After Effects (except for Chromakey and Stabilization). I have continually tried to switch to industry standard Premiere - which is admittedly getting better than awful, - but any time crunch, it's always Vegas that I turn to. And one of the best features of the software is this very forum. In the old days, I was a frequent visitor and contributor. And any time I have a problem, this is where I turn. And 98% of the time I get an answer. Quickly and correctly. Actually the only problem I have with Vegas is it's marketing department. How they have not be able to present Vegas for what it is; one of the most facile editing programs ever created, is still a source of amazement to me. When Apple abandoned the professional editing market, Sony should have been there to pick up the pieces. Well they gave that ball to Adobe - too bad. RENDERING HD TO SD FOR TV
It worked perfectly. That button is VERY WELL CONCEALED - I guess it's a terrorist thing. In the RENDER AS box, under OPTIONS there is the "Do not Letterbox" click box. What a lot of aggravation I've been through for that. So THANKS set - you are the best.

V13 Crashing (glitching) on renders
Hey Old Smoke - no need to get snippy - I'm in desperate need of help. I had already done your suggestions, but unfortunately even they didn't work. The problem is so weird that I posted it three times with different wording in hope someone would recognized the problem. The GPU was already set to off. The Win Update is not auto. And she was working just fine yesterday. I admit it did often take two or three reboots to get running but once it started, it cooked. Now it simply can't get past that stupid GPU load - it gets there and closes. I've been using Vegas since v3.0 and consider it one of the most under-rated edit softwares on the market - hey they ALL have problems. Right now I'm just trying to get back to work.

CLEAN start on Vegas??
It's killing me Tom - two months of editing - rendering for final output for national tv campaign - v12 won't get past the darn GPU insertion (don't have it - had it turned off - everything worked for the last two months, etc.) Your CTRL/SHIFT absolutely brought me back to a menu with a reset to factory button, but even though the rest of the launch took longer (as it loaded stuff), when it got to the GPU - it closes. I'm rendering on another computer, so I won't have to hang myself, but this is my main axe, and it worked yesterday. I'd like to get it running again. I also installed the latest update of v13 on this machine and it boots just fine. Then it crashes in weird ways on rendering (admittedly 103 video tracks aint nothing, but v12 handeled it all just fine. Go figure...it's probably some system or machine glitch - well you know what I'm talkin' about. Thanks for your help. v

Do not see an AVID export in my Render solutions. Do i have to import a new codec? If yes - where can I get it? If not - which of the Render As solutions do I use?

how to do a clean install on VP12?
Still lost - started Vegas 12 with SHIFT/CTRL and opened a current project. Went to RENDER TO A NEW TRACK and selected my favorite few render Codecs. Click show Favorites only - it worked - three codecs came up - hooray. Closed the window. Opened it again and once again my machine selects an old Architect render codec.. I haven't printed a DVD in nearly a year. What am I doing wrong?

multiple edit stations?
Thanks for the fine feedback. Everything has been working well, and it's comforting to have all data in one place, and backed up every night. I will upgrade my ethernet to cat 7, just to keep the system clean. Right now we are storing all elements on an i7 connected by the ethernet. Is it possible (preferable? ) to keep the data on a third, data only machine? How would that work? Would it be more efficient?

export Prores?
OK - I'm shooting on a Canon C300 (and 5d mk3) and editing on Vegas using the AVI HQ1080 24p YUV coded and it works like a charm. Vegas reads the files right out off of the camera CF and is a dream to cut with. But DG media { a well known distirbution and telephone numbering company}, and they only want ProRes for retitling. I used StreamClip to send a H264 file and they accepted it but inferred the quality was not up to ProRes. My footage is gorgeous and I don't want to lose one "bit" of color and/or sharpness. If a Mac mini will handle the job for $500 bucks, I will grudgingly buy one, but will I then have to add the cost of Final Cut? And what do you suppose I'll need in total to get these files out?

Ha ha Kimberly - that is funny. In truth I lectured on production, lighting ,\ directing and greenscreen at the annual Las Vegas NAB for about five or six years. I generally had "standing room only" - I guess people liked my slightly off-color jokes along with my slightly off-color footage. 4:3 screen markers
Been extraordinarily busy with large project (yayyy). Alright here's my issue. Having moved to Florida about 15 years ago, I gave up a lot of the "big time" stuff I was doing. There is simply no market for $100k plus commercials outside of NY, LA and occasional other cities (even Miami, I'm told) - but by and large my "professional" endeavors have drifted to regional commercials, sales and training films with budgets about the same as we used to spend on food. I had no choice (being a "film whore" and totally addicted to creating media. So I gave up 25 to 50 man crews and relearned to shoot with 2-5 trusy assistants. But recently, I've been approached once again by national advertisers. The issue is that all my production is now done in HD - 16:9. But a lot of these national advertisers (primarily in Direct Response) take the master commercials I produce and send them to duplicators that put special tagged telephone numbers on them. And here, stateside, a LOT of regional broadcasters are still only showing 4:3 media. In fact one of the largest of these telephone duplicators still do all the numbering and titling on TAPE! (Can you believe it?) SO - you darn well better have you primary action and titles in a 4:3 constrained box. And YES I did make my own semi-transparent mask on a separate layer, which I flick on and off whenever I need to know what will be in the end movie. BUT - I made the template myself (and have no trust in my handiwork). Thus I'd like a "professional" title safety template for 4:3 on my 16:9 editing screen. And - oh yeah, while we're at it) I'd also LOVE a color bars generator built in to my edit system. That's gotta be, say what? - 10 lines of code?? Because there are STILL MANY people out there with old, trusty, and worn out CRT tv sets. Does that answer your Q, Sir Grazie?

Vegas Pro not 'professional'?
Someone asked if I could show some samples of footage edited in Vegas. How about this? http://victormiltassociates.com/ Everything I've done in "digital" has been done with Vegas (all the way from V3 to the current V12). Because I've been shooting a long time, the cameras start at 4:3 Sony Beta's, to the Z1 (one of my favorites), to the Canon 5D ( a lot) and now I just shot with the Sony C300 - and I may be back in love again. Oh...those curves... Some of the footage was from my (looong) past and all of that was shot in 35mm and edited in various manners which predate digital editing. But once Digital "came of age" - I dropped 35mm like a hot potato - and NO - you could not convince me to return to film for any money in the world. Wanna argue that with me - well i've got over a million feet of 35mm footage in my locker - what have you got? Now - belligerent smart ass comments to the side - you folks live in the greatest era in media production - EVER! And my main tool for video editing (and a hell of a lot of effects) is Sony Vegas. For high end stabilization and keying (national broadcast quality) - I still use After Effects. For most corporate work that will end up on the web - I do it all in Vegas. Thanks Sony.

Vegas Pro not 'professional'?
I don't know what's a "professional" editing system in 2013. When I bought my first AVID in 1989 it was strictly an off-line solution. The images we edited were 320x120 and looked like poop. BUT I regained my life, for the first time. At the time I owned a full BetaSP edit system (about $400k). We could cut our own national tv commercial in a studio I built in my home. At the time it was unheard of, to have your own edit system. A half million investment sort of kept the club elite. But tape editing was sloooow. We accepted it. Hey, it was still faster than cutting in film. My non-linear AVID changed all that. TV spots that generally took five days to edit "on-line" on tape, I could knock off in a day or two. Then we would generate an edit decision list EDL and bring it into an edit studio in NYC to be rebuilt on 1" tape. When the AVID became air worthy (that is the resolution was suitable for broadcast) the whole game changed again. I dumped my Beta decks, waveform monitors, Abacus digital effects and genlock and a whole room full of gear which I no longer remember the names of. In the late '90s I bought my first DV camera a Sony VX-1000 and shot one of the first DV national commercials for American Express publishing. They loved it. I did well and soon was back to a half million in AVID gear, but steady work at the old rates paid it all off in a year or so. Then huge profits. In about 1998 I met Douglas Spotted Eagle at a trade show in Yonkers and he literally knocked my sox off with this new all digital editing system - Vegas 3.0. It did everything my AVIDs with banks of SCSI drives and all kinds of other gear, did. And it worked on a cheapo desktop. And it functioned fast and easy. And I could teach my staff how to do simple logging and straight cuts. A-freaking-mazing. But I still had a large vested interest in tape completion (although by this time it was totally off `1" and on BetaSP. No more schlepping to the city. In 2000 I moved to Florida - sold off most of my hardware and began to edit only in Vegas - ON A LAPTOP! I've never looked back. I used to own 2 AVID Media composer 4000 systems (about $90k to $120k). They crashed all the time, but by and large they delivered. Since that time I have created dozens of national tv commercials, won scores of prizes, edited three features (and won more prizes for them) - all with the ever more wonderful Sony Vegas. Sure it's had it's moments of despair. News flash - THEY ALL DO! I continue to edit virtually everything on Vegas. I own CS6 - big deal. Only the keying system is better than my Vegas. Everything else I can do without any other help. 3D graphics, and edits. Sound editing and color correction. I used to go to five different specialty shops to do what I now do at home. What else is there? Why is Vegas "not professional"? Because unfortunately Sony simply doesn't promote it to a professional crowd.. But on the screen - you can't tell. And in the end that 's all that counts.

It's a question of fear. If for any reason the color is bad when you go to tv, you want to be able to point to the monitors and say, "Hey, it's a broadcast monitor. " So I want to match that w/o spending four grand.

I confess, I have NO idea about transfer rates and other important items. That's why I turn to this chorus of experts. It seemed like a good idea, and I assumed that "flash drive" was the same as SSD, but now that I think about it, I realize it was not SO smart, in reality.

changing defaults
That's what I thought (after using VPro for nearly 10 years). Nope - I set it to what I want and it defaults back to what it wants (Architect template). Naturally, I forget - make the render and then yell and scream and throw things. Gotta be a way without reinstalling and losing the various things that I like.

Label a file on timeline
Right click the clip on the video. Change the PROPERTIES to the new name of the clip. You can change the PROPERTIES name on either the audio or video. Vegas will still remember the original name of the footage for you, as well. You will also want to click VIEW>ACTIVE TAKE INFORMATION to see this info on the timeline.
