Fast 'storyboard' style pre-edit?
Actually, there is a 'select everything from this point on' feature in Vegas Pro 8. Right click on an event (brings up the menu), and select 'Select Events To End'. That does not select ALL events to end. It only selects those on that track. That means that unless you choose other tracks and THEN that selection (which is what I was referring to) then all of your work from that point on will be out-of-sync. This is my single biggest disappointment with Vegas.

Pinnacle Studio 12 is amazing and much better than previous versions. I only point out using PS 12 because of the request for a storyboard feature. I personally have absolutely no use for this feature. Even though I used it when I was starting out I have not used it since. Vegas offers everything I need to quickly edit video. Yes, there are some things I'd like to see changed. One would be to have a select everything to the right (or left) without having to find the first clip on each time line, hold the Ctrl key, select them and THEN select to end. What a pain. I have to say that's one advantage that Liquid has over Vegas. Also when cutting I have to again hold the Ctrl key and select each track and THEN cut through them all. In Liquid when cutting it cuts straight down through everything EXCEPT locked tracks. That makes it very fast to edit. Just some more thoughts...

OT: 1TB HD after MIR - $79
All things considered - out of the thousands of hard drives I've gone through both at work and at home here are the rankings from best to worst: 1) Western Digital 2) Seagate 3) Conner 4) Fujitsu 5) Hitachi (almost as bad as Maxtors) Way, way, way at the bottom: Maxtor (honestly there are probably worse drives but I can't think of any right now). I'm sure there are some missing from my list. There are names I can't even remember.

Vegas and The New year
2008 was a great year in many ways. I switched from Liquid to Vegas. I guess I don't look at any "problems" in Vegas as being that bad because I came from an NLE that was hideous and rampant with problems. The other thing I'm thankful for is our video business made more this year than any other year (in some cases two years combined). All of my videos for the last six months have been done in Vegas and the users are raving about them.

Bizarre responses. I was not implying that the video should be made by an amateur. My assumption is that this person knows their way around a camera. If not, then naturally it would be futile to pursue this type of purchase. In my world I want to own the equipment AND be responsible for being properly trained to use it AND be in control of the process. I'm sure there are plenty of great people out there that can do this for you; I'm just not interested in that. Hopefully, I've been a little clearer this time - Get the equipment BUT only if you are capable of using it properly. How's that?

What's All This About 1080p and 3 Gbps?
The demise of OTA would bring much greater social issues with it. We already have a huge gap between the tech elite and the tech poor. Please explain. Thanks.

Authoring program (other than Architect)

I'm confused about your suggestion. DV-AVI IS the less compressed format. Did you mean something else? FWIW - The results of the method I use are spectacular.

Authoring program (other than Architect)
I understand you are on a limited budget so i hope it's okay to give my preferred method of authoring DVDs. 1) Render as DV-AVI out of Vegas. 2) Use TmpGenc Video Encoder XPress (I think that's the name but I'm not at my video computer). 3) Create DVD with DVD Lab Pro. IMO this is a fantastic piece of software and does a great job. 4) Use Nero to burn. The media I use is ProDisk DVD-R Printable White. I can't think of one DVD that has ever failed using this process and I have burned thousands of DVDs.

OT: New IE security flaw is huge.
The security problems with Internet Explorer are Microsoft's fault because they insisted that Internet Explorer had to be integrated into the operating system to benefit themselves at our expense. The same way it's the banks fault that they got robbed. FYI - IE is NOT integrated with Windows.

OT: Blu-Ray made the top of the list...
Interesting list. It's hard to believe that anyone would have a Gateway anything at the top of the list. From what I have seen so far I believe Guitar Hero World Tour is superior to Rock Band 2. I will likely be getting that for my son so I (I mean he) can rock out. He's right on about the i7. I just discovered Hulu yesterday so i can't comment yet. So far it looks like there is something there (maybe even better than Vimeo). He's totally right about Blu-Ray. I still can't believe that there has been so much confusion and problems with this product. Generally by now the media would have dropped fairly drastically. I simply will not pay that much for blank media and I'm not going to buy movies that cost $10 more than their DVD equivalent. For one we won't notice much difference on our 720p TV. Also, some of the Blu-Ray are just DVD upsampled so even on the best TV the difference is neglible. I know this has been discussed so I'm not trying to start another discussion on this. My main point is in how much the media costs and the fact that this product seems to be in limbo.

I remember when people were complaining about a supposed "virus" in one of the video games I wrote (maybe Kiloblaster). It wasn't a virus but it was being identified as one. If there IS a virus then it likely came from the site you downloaded it from or it is incorrectly identifying it as a virus. There is no trojan in KMPlayer.

OT: Decent Printer to print direct to DVD
The cost of a complete set of cartridges for the Epson is almost as much as the cost of a new printer that comes with cartridges, so it would be an equipment upgrade replacing the ink. Actually, they hold different amounts of ink. The replacement cartridges typically come in two sizes (something like 7.4ml and 11.1ml). They include the smallest and some printers (not necessarily Epson) include a starter cartridge that is much smaller. My one complaint about Epson is that they made it impossible to buy other cartridges. On the bright side - those other brands are what usually causes all the problems.

Odd. For years I've heard how great Epson is. It's one of the reasons I switched from HP. When I saw how incredible the quality was on an Epson compared to HP I was sold. Later when I started printing to CD/DVD I had a few difficulties with the tray on the 900. The R320 lasted through several thousand DVDs. The RX680 has a much sturdier tray and one that is easier to set. You can even line it up easily with one hand. It prints perfectly every time. Of course some day I hope to be able to afford a bulk printer. These things are almost like some sort of a cult: 1) I love Intel (though currently using AMD) and when I say that several people will talk about how Intel sucks. 2) I love Windows XP (also use Vista on laptop). There will be people who rave about how much better their MAC or Linux box is. I have several Linux distros (mainly Ubuntu and US) but prefer XP. 3) I love KMPlayer (just found it) and people want to talk about how much better x, y, or z is and how KMPlayer has all kinds of problems (which it doesn't). 4) I use an nVidea card and people will tell me that ATI is better. (I've used just about all of them). 5) I love Western Digital hard drives. I've actually had people try to say that Maxtors (the worst drive on the planet) are better. What a joke. 6) I love Dell products. There are those who say that Dell sucks and HP, et al is so much better and way, way, way, more reliable. Not only that but they throw in a sunny vacation to Hawaii for any purchase of $500 or more. Let's see.... Well there is so much more that could be said. P.S. I started with computers in 1972 and learned COBOL and keypunch. So there. ;-)

An Epson printer is your best bet unless you need to do hundreds of DVDs. I have used the 900, R320 and currently use the RX680 which rocks (and also doubles as a copy machine and scanner). This last one handles them better than the other two Epsons I used and the print quality is hard to beat. I use ProDisc DVD-R printable with the white surface and can't remember any that have gone bad. I burn thousands of DVDs. The photo quality for my covers is also fantastic. I've used Canon, HP and many others and Epson by far rules!

How do you play at greater or less than normal speed in KMP? Hold the Shift key and press the number key + or -. Experiment with other hot keys. There are lots. For example + or - will zoom in and out respectively. Use the arrow keys to move forwards or backwards 5 seconds at a time. Space bar pauses (like most NLEs). Pressing modifier keys like Shift and Alt will allow you to do even more very quickly. Check it out. The more I play with this the more I love it. At this point I have no reason to use anything else. :-)

The version of KMPlayer I am using is 2.9.3.1428 and it has been rock-solid. It has played everything I have thrown at it. Now instead of using WMP (which is slow and bloated) for most stuff, and QT for .mov videos, and another product to play .flv (from YouTube) - I just use KMP. I love this player. Tip - Try the Ironman skin. It blows away just about any skin for any product I've ever seen.
