VLC Player? You got the latest? Woah!
Thanks for the tips everyone. I decided to find out if there was something else out there that was fast AND customizable. I found the PERFECT player - KMPlayer which can be found here: http://www.kmplayer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=8351 Within seconds I had customized it the way I wanted it. Not only that but it will play virtually everything you can throw at it without downloading any extra codecs. It is also blazing fast even when you use a skin like "Ironman" with all it's flash videos, etc. While I'm not likely to use it, my son will love it. I do understand that skins are secondary but being able to customize what I use is important to me. In fact I can state that this is by far the best player I have ever used. For those who want something just as powerful but without the eye candy use Windows Media Player Classic and install the K-Lite Codec Pack (pretty much everything you'll ever need). I guess that's why there are so many options out there - because we all have different tastes. :-)

YEah, bad idea V777, don't use it. I'm not sure I understand. You are the one who started this thread and spoke so highly of it. Yet you can't even give some sort of idea as to why this is a problem. Is it that this is a great player but it's just poorly documented and skins are a long way from how great WMP and others do it? If so, just tell me. Thanks.

Well I just tested it and I'm not impressed. The first thing I did was to check out the preferences. I saw a place to change the Skins. First I have to browse to the skins folder and manually choose a skin. Nothing happened. I decided to check the documentation which only exists online. I went here: http://wiki.videolan.org/Skins and the instructions were totally wrong. I decided to close out of VLC and end my testing for now. But before I typed this I opened it one more time and now it has the skin. However, it also gives the error: File reading failed: VLC could not open the file "C:\Temp\vlt2\layout/cone.png". Furhtermore it will not let me change to other skins even though it shows them in the list. I selected a new one and it blinked. I closed VLC and reopened it but it still has this ugly skin with a white screen and a blue fuzzy strip through the middle. If it can't do skins then I can't trust it to do more complex things.

I just recently learned of VLC and have not had a chance to fully test it. I've downloaded this latest version and will check it out. My big concern is that like most of these "FREE" utilities they will start charging a fee.

Congratulations on what appears to be a very nice system. As was mentioned by several others - upgrade to 64-bit to really take advantage of all that power. P.S. I want one. :-)

It looks pretty good. If you can afford it go with more memory, bigger hard drive, CPU. There's no video card choices but the nVidia listed here looks good. Skip Norton Security Suite (bloated, slow, bad). Add Adobe Premiere Elements. Even though you use Vegas it's nice to have another NLE to play around with. That's all for just a very quick review.

OT: Need advice on budget for tax write off
John, I'm not quite sure how you misintepreted what I was saying. Let me be crystal clear as to what I mean. If you volunteer/donate or in any way freely GIVE of your TIME or SERVICES then you can NOT deduct it from your taxes. No way, no how. However, I deduct the cost of every single DVD that I burn for charity and all of the ink and paper and DVD cases and I track all of my mileage. I still get the tax deduction for my dedicated office space (which is huge). Let's just say that I do understand how all this works (we got $12,000 back in taxes this year). Bottom Line: It seems that the majority of people are in agreement here. Check with your tax specialist to learn for yourself. If money is tight then do jobs that pay. If you've been blessed with some extra, then by all means give to charity.

OT Diehard Vegas Fan
WordStar was the first word processor I learned. My computer days go back before that.. COBOL programming using a keypunch! I too have some old software that is as reliable as the day it was released: Lotus WordPro (I think the first version after AMI Pro) though most of my work is done in Word, Lotus Approach (a far superior database to Access which I also own), an old label program that was made for Windows 3.1, a journal program I bought from Parsons in around 1992. Back to the OT Topic - Vegas is still the top of my list for NLEs and I have used many. Whenever someone on the Liquid forums mentions something about Vegas like "multicam sucks," I share about how it blows away the same feature in Liquid. Not only that but I learned it after one post on these forums and no additional training. One of the mods keeps deleting my posts and you should hear some of the "crazy" responses. It's almost like some sort of cult. :-)

OT: Need advice on budget for tax write off
I have a sort of philosophical question: If someone does charity work (aka volunteers their time and services), is it really appropriate to be asking, "What can I get out of this?" I'm one who looks for every legal and ethical tax advantage that I can but I don't see the point of doing charity work if it causes this much grief for a person. When I give my time and services I am doing it because I believe in the cause or there's some other compelling reason. The bottom line is: I'm doing it for free by choice and I don't expect anything in return from either the organization or the IRS or anyone else.

A CPA or Tax Guy will be the best bet. They should know the tax law in your area. I highly recommend having a professional do your business taxes.

I've been told by my tax guy here in Oregon - That's a no-no. You can't write off something that is not an ACTUAL expense. Perhaps that's why it's called "charity" (aka generosity, kindness, etc.). Check in your state but I am fairly positive you will find the same to be true where you live.

I never heard of them. They look good but the fact that you have to create an account just to get a price tells me it will be too much. I think I'll stick to SmartSound and Digital Juice which have both served me well over the years. Thanks for the link. It's always good to see options.

How's your video business?
I have a full time job as a Network Adminstrator. I do run an actual business as an LLC at visualappeal.org. I have never advertised and I am constantly getting requests to do projects for people. Our last major project, released on 11/29, was for a 3-camera shoot of a performance by seven magicians. So I am thankful for the constant flow of work. It allows me to buy more goodies. :-)

This forum is one of the worst I have seen. It is unbelievable that someone would be opposed to others having a choice. I believe in having the OPTION of subscribing to a thread or not. It is certainly NOT selfish and to suggest that is ignorant.

Thanks I was able to successfully use my Sony DCR TRV-720 to preview on my desk TV. It's amazing how different it looks on my LCD monitors compared to an actual TV. The LCD monitors make the video look washed out while the TV has a richer, more saturated look. It's also not quite as sharp on the TV. I've got some other priorities right now but will consider the Canopus 300 at some point. I did check prices and reviews and it looks good. I appreciate all the comments.

Seeking ideas/advice for video project
I've done this type of thing on several projects. One of the things I like to do, depending on the audience and the purpose, is to speed up the action. Start with the standard speed with some soft music and narration. Find a spot that lends itself to a change in tempo. I've sped it up and added some of the "circus-type" music. This will take some good judgment as some people may not take it the right away; so be careful. You can also use some epic-sounding music to build tension. In that case you might want to even use some slow motion with blurs between scenes or other changes. The key is to keep this moving and whatever you do don't have fast or slow for long periods of time. I also would not mix them in the middle. However, I would use slow at the end with some fast in the middle. These are just some quick thoughts. I've got to go as my wife is calling me for dinner. Bye.
