Multicam & color fx
Musicvid.... I tired putting putting the fx in the project window, but that didn't work. I'm guessing you have to do that before the multicam edit. My issue is I don't color correct till the end. Maybe I should change my work flow, but I really like waiting till the middle or end of the edit and have looked at the footage a few times before I have at the color work. Thanks all for the advice.....

Thanks. I'm really looking for shortcuts in technique. I don't have problems manually color correcting. It's applying 2-3 color fx quickly to multiple cuts after a clip has been chopped up into 10-20 smaller clips..... Right now I do that by making a clip the way I want, copy it, and the ctrl clicking on 2-10 other clips and then paste event attributes on to them. If those new clips already have fx on them, they have to be deleted first. Very manual and labor intensive, but it works for me... Just looking for quicker/easier way....

Vegas 10a - Problems with Cineform.
I am not able to use the Codec for output from within Vegas 10. NeoScene runs as a stand alone and Vegas V9 can still see / use the Cineform codec for rendering. In Vegas V10, the cineform codec can be selected but when starting the renderer error message about not finding the codec. I deactivated, uninstalled, rebooted, and reinstall, and activated Neoscene, but still get the results. I'm using the trial V10. I went back to V9 for current project as V10 crashed 2x on me, one time rebooting the computer as I was scrubbing through abunch of native 5D and Gh1 files. Maybe 30-40 on the time line. The other time it hung when playing. Will try again later..... I purchased a license but haven't installed it yet..... Just don't have time for any more testing right now.

AVCHD gh1 Flicker Vegas 9 but not Vegas 8
I have Cineform's neoscene and that works fine for transcoding the AVCHD files and QT files for Vegas. However, their licensing makes it difficult to switch between computers. It would be nice if they were like others and let you have one copy on workstation and one on laptop. The switching between computers is a hassle, so I don't do it. As to the occasional quick edit using the AVCHD files, it's a shame V9 can't do it.

Render settings are the same. Preview shows the problem which is the same on render. Properties are the same for both. I've spent enough time messing with it to think it's a codec problem. It's sort of baffling that ver 8 doesn't show the problem but v9 does. I'm traveling and using win 7 on my lap top which has way less on it then my workstation. I'll try it when I get back to see if I can replicate the problem. I was hoping someone else has/had seen this problem and could tell me to add or delete a codec and my problems would be over. It's strange that windows media player works fine but when in Vegas v9, I see the problem.

Lars, there is no easy answer to your question. FCP is used by many. It has it's pro's and cons. I personally don't like it because you have to buy into Apples way and doing things, their way the highway. The few times I've used it, I find things I like and don't like. I am always disappointed in the rendering times for the extra cost of the workstation. It performs and renders no different than other computers. It needs horsepower to render. In regards to buying their workstations, you are paying 2 premiums. One is to get the workstation chip from intel and 2 is the apple hardware. The apple workstations are engineered and the layout is beautiful, but you pay a big premium. I don't believe you get the dollar payback from intel on the two CPU lines. I'm very happy with the cost performance of the i7 . I did a render test on a $1000 i7 quad HP notebook this week that I'm thinking of buying. It rendered a windows HD clip in 12 min 15 seconds. (cpu at around 90%+). My q6600 did it in the same time and my i7860 did it in 7 minutes and 5 seconds.) Every time I think about getting a FCP system, I eventually stick with Vegas because I can do so many things with it and it's not worth the extra money for a new set of problems and no performance gains. A full blown FCP workstation sans the extra storage (same cost) is about 4-5 grand in the USA. I can build a i7 machine for around $1200-$1500 in the usa which is only slightly slower. Add on the cost of Vegas software vs FCP and there is more savings. I also usually run with 4-9 drives in one of my workstations. Mac workstations are limited to 4. With Win 7 and the new intel chips, performance problems are lessening. Working with proxy files would help if you can figure out something that fits your needs. In another generation or two of CPU's, I'm hoping playback problems disappear entirely. Upgrade your current machine now and then buy another when Intel launches their next line of chips. I keep two workstations churning and use the older one with a raid 5 mass storage. I make all partitions 2 TB and backup to 2TB drives. Works well and I don't worry about losing anything other than fire or theft. Upgrade the CPU/Mem/MB every 12-16 months and make the current workstation the backup machine when I upgrade. Good luck on your decision and let us know what you decide.

GH1 AVCH 5D 7D QT Cineform and Vegas
I still don't understand. Neoscene preserves all the data, but when I view the original 5D .mov file in Vegas and pull in the NeoScene file, they show different on the scope and they look different. The image loses a little of it's dynamics. When I render out the 2 different files from Vegas and bring them back into Vegas, I get two different files (actually the same as were in vegas, 1 at 0-255 and 1 at the 16-235). They look and are different. I'm making the assumption that the dynamic range of the file has be altered (truncated and squashed). Sorry for being thick headed, but I just don't get it.

GH1 AVCH 5D 7D QT Cineform and Vegas
Dave, what's the difference when I render out a 5D QT file from Vegas (that's still at 0-255) and I use the Cineform Codec and when I transcode with NeoScene? From within Vegas, the Cineform Codec leaves the levels at 0-255 for the 5D .qt files. The originals and the Neoscene files at view differently in Vegas and they output differently using Cineforms codec. Wouldn't it be possible to give us a choice in NeoScene as to truncate or not? I'm sorry if these aren't intelligent questions, but I just don't seem to get it. I'd much rather edit in 0-255 and make the decision on output whether to go 0-255 or 16-235.

I installed a program from Nattyware called Pixie. I get the same readings from Pixie for RGB as I do from the Sepia FX color picker in the Vegas Preview monitor. I do not get the same readings in photoshop. Fun stuff.

Thanks, I knew it was the long way of doing it, but it was one I knew. One of the feature I use to balance in Photoshop, is lightness under saturation. I guess I should give HSL fx a try. Thanks.

Canon 5D footage available for viewing and comment
Nice Job. "I shot it with a cameraman and I was Director/Gaffer. We started at 8am and wrapped at 5pm with a 40 minute lunch during which the entire crew broke, and ate burgers. Both of us had a great lunch." That is a lot of shooting for 1 day. Congrats on not only the final project, but getting that amount of shots and setups in one day. I'm impressed. I'm in total agreement with you. It was and still is a game changer. For every naysayer you will find 100's of users whom agree with you. For a first time user of the camera, you did good. Lots of forums out there to help. In the US, the camera was not officially shipped out until the week of thanksgiving in 2008, not September. All other footage seen before that were from loaners and prototypes. I saw your equipment usage list on youtube, but was curious as to if you used a steadicam or so other mounting system on a couple of the hand held shots? It is a pain in the butt to do some of the work arounds for a few off the camera's "left off" or purposely "taken off" features, however, they can be worked with like external sound or using Magic Lantern firmware hack to use external connections into the camera and control the audio level. Some of the common complalints I see from people whom don't like the camera, are based on "pixel peeping" and the rolling shutter effects. I have the 7D and 5D and those are legitimate issues. However, as you alluded to in this tread, JUST LOOK AT THE FINAL RESULTS. The rolling shutter issue has to be managed. There are just some shots this camera isn't going to be able to do. Any chance you'd put your footage up on Vimeo or maybe Exposure room? You work will show better in my opinion. That being said, enjoy the camera and keep up the good work. Technology is moving fast and there are new markets being opened up because of this camera. Something new will be here soon enough to knock the 5D MKII into obsolescence 5 years from now we will laughing our asses off as we say "that was lot of work shooting and in post to make the camera work". However, we will also be saying, yea, but I became a better filmmaker and made money, so it wasn't all bad.

Core i7 940 vs Core 2 Quad Q6600
I did what you are talking about. I sold a Q6600 (1of 2) and spent another $400 + and upgraded to a i7 860 2.8. I haven't had time to overclock but am running Win 7 Pro and I get 50% + increase in rendering times. I edit 1920x1080 qt footage from Canon 5D these days. I would give you a 100% vote to upgrade your computer.

I have NEVER been so angry...
As one who is frustrated and pretty fed up with the current state, me thinks it's not much better elsewhere. Went to the cow and read a long thread about FCP which is similar to many postings here when a new version comes out. Examples, it's a .5 upgrade, this is stupid, it doesn't work, why didn't they wait for 64bit to come out, hand writing is on the wall Apple is not putting effort into it cause the pro market is too small and not worth their effort, this doesn't work, it's stupid, etc etc etc. Then listen to everyone talk about Adobe's products being buggy, (I haven't updated much of their stuff as it's getting too bloated and their activation has caused me problems so I quit buying their stuff). Avid is never a consideration because of costs, AVIO I watch but never consider as I've a history of their stuff sort of working, but its takes a lot of effort and knowledge for do's and don'ts. Guess I'll head over to the Media 100 forums and look at them. In their day, they were the best working system out of the box. Not sure what they are currently, but I don' hear a lot of rumblings about problems. Not sure how big their market sizie is anymore. Unfortunately it seems to be a reflection of what's going on in the world. Everything is getting harder and sort of going to crap. There are not a lot of good options out there. Wouldn't it be great if Sony figured this out and put a real beta program together for their next release (kind of like Microsoft did with Win 7). I am running Win 7 on 3 of my 6 machines right now and damn if they aren't running good. I'm all XP and OSX. My macbook is not supported on Win 7 and I've had to figure it out myself. Proof is in the pudding, the last 4 weeks, OS X has only been running about 5% of the time. I've pre-ordered 6 copies of Win 7 at reduced prices. Not unhappy with XP, just want some of the new features and more speed. Sort of the same reasons we jump on Vegas upgrades too soon. With hd, render times are way too long and anytime we can speed it up, that's very desirable. Between that and new features, it's not hard to want to try the updates before their ready. Not sure how hard it would be for Sony to put a release candidate program out there for 3-6 months before releasing it. A good web page, 1 person monitoring it and a weekly or bi weekly meeting with the developing team and 1 good person to try to mimic the problems internally. What's so hard about that?

"I have NEVER been so angry..." I can tell you I have experienced the same reaction to Vegas 9 myself since putting it on a computer with a fresh install of the SO for testing and using purposes. I've been around a while and installed many NLE systems. The current state of NLE"s is that they are less stable and harder to maintain IMO. Yes, they do more, but at a terrible cost. Our current state of affairs with NLE's, bugs, workaround, install / deactivate, reinstall, reactivate in this industry makes me sick. Yes I can figure out work arounds, but they take time and energy and besides being tiring, the learning curve is painful. Gotchas seem to running our lives these days. I just purchased Neoscene, ( I work by myself and have 3 workstations and a 2 laptops that I honor the vendors licensing agreements on). The number of steps to go through to buy, download, install, activate, deactivate, etc etc etc..... is ridiculous. I currently own the product, have serial and activation numbers but am not able to run it because of activation issues. Have to wait till Monday to find out what I did wrong. Too many steps. Lately, I have been finding less capable programs to use with simpler licensing agreements that I use because I can maintain and install them without the drama and lost time due to activation issues. I constantly change, update and rebuild my systems, and many activation systems cause delays and extra work to get them up and running again. I own some programs that the vendor has gone out of business and I can't even install their programs anymore because there is no may to activate them. Pretty sad. I find John Cline's comments about looking at new solutions interesting as he's been around a while and been very loyal to Vegas and defends Vegas many times when it's getting bashed. He may have written that in a moment of frustration, but frustration builds when all we want to do is edit our footage and we are constantly getting bit in the butt with bugs. I went to Apple last week to do some timing test with the new FCP. I am considering going back to the Mac for editing. Got there and found out I'd also have to buy a new laptop cause FCP won't install without a dedicated graphics chip and my macbook doesn't have one. Also, to my dismay, they hadn't loaded up FCP yet, so I wasted more time and left more frustrated. I don't have the money to spend on a full FCP system, but I'm still considering it because of the sorry state of affairs with my Vegas setups. We can make almost anything work, but who wants to put all the effort into maintaining a list of bugs to avoid. Nothing is more frustrating than having put in time on a project and having your program become corrupted. Redo's introduce more chances for mistakes. More mistakes, more time, more missed deadlines, etc... For all the good things that Vegas has, the damage being done by number of issues that have to be worked around and the increased number of crashes, in my mind, is driving more people to look elsewhere. V9 might end accelerating the number of people who look elsewhere. Frustrated and Angry. That pretty much sums it up. Sony, can you hear us?

9.0a update issue (ends prematurely)
I installed Win 7 64bit two weeks ago and have a minimal amount of programs on it. Vegas 9 64Bit has been a disaster. Took 3 days to do a 1 day edit with it. I finally got the 2 hr time line to behave using Cineform files mixing 1080p and 720p. Did the v9 64 bit upgrade today and it installed without a hitch, no error messages, etc. Did a quick test with new footage and the 2 hr time line I just got done with and no glitch so far. I expect glitches but am keeping my fingers crossed. In the middle of the 3 day edit for the 1 day rough edit, I went out and looked at FCP. Apple didn't have it on their demo machine yet so it cooled my heals for a few days. I waited till 2 weeks ago to buy V9 as I didn't want to be test subject. Guess I didn't wait long enough. Frustrated, but calming down till the next edit.

Frameserver: BETA Testing . . .
Sorry for my lack of knowledge, but will somebody explain the how and why of frameserving as it applies to use with Vegas Video. I see it mentioned on the forum here, but have no idea how it might help my workflow as I don't know what it is. Pretty sorry statement for someone who has been around digital video editing for 20 years.

I'm sorry I don't have much time for testing nor is my editing system set up with my fastest raid. I do have vegas 8.1c on my server with an old crappy video card and that has my fastest raid. Hopefully, I'll have time to get a faster raid on the edit machine, or change graphic cards and put the intensity card in the server. My editor is just using 2 striped 7200 rpm drives and a test Raid card that sucked and I pulled it out. It has a middle of the road graphics card and used to overclocked to 3.2, but now running at 2.4 because of some issues that are probably from having too many software programs and codecs in it. No time to rebuild right now. My server has 6- 500GB SATA Seagate drives raid 5, (about 80% full right now) an old graphics card, and Vegas 8.1c. I did clear a 500GB partition, so at least it's not cluttered for a video test. Preview set to 1/2 size and preview mode on my editing monitor with no scaling allowed: 3 cineform clips 1920x1080p on 3 video tracks and they playback at 29.97 in a 1920x1080P time line at 29.77 as clips with no fx but scaling on 2 tracks. I have the bottom one full screen and the 2nd and 3rd ones scaled as picture in picture. They didn't play back at full frame best quality at 29.97 fps. 20 seconds transitions between the two clips played ok and when I did a transition between two clips on bottom track and had the two scaled pics on two more tracks, it took a quick hit to 26+ fps for the transition time. Dropping the single audio track was good for 1 fps. Then it was 27_ fps. When having 3 audio tracks, the frame rate dropped a tad. These numbers were with 2 audio tracks disabled. I'll try some uncompressed files later. OT... I used to set up some systems with raid 0, 8 -10k SCSI drives. We were able to do 4 tracks of realtime uncompressed SD Video and 4 alpha channels with a fair amount of realtime effects. Blurs, scales, color correction, etc..... Company went under and product was discontinued (844/X Media 100). I kept supporting the product for a while and did some storage work. I did one system with ide drives 7200 that worked converting 8 drives to scsi then running two scsi channels. When trying the same thing with 8 sata drives in stripped 0, I got higher speed ratings on reads and writes then I did on the 8 10k scsi drives in raid 0. However, I could only do 4 Realtime uncompressed SD tracks and 2 alpha channels. Audio didn't really matter as we had those on different mechanisms. I think the difference was the seek times on the 8 SATA or IDE drives we tested with. We dropped a few frames with 4 Video channels and 3 or 4 Alpha channels. I later went to 5 drives each on the 7200 RPM IDE drives (2x5 for 10) with each 5 drive set converted to SCSI, then we could run the 4 Vid and 4 alpha channels together. Didn't make any sense unless the SCSI protocol has quicker access calls. Gave up after that, but have always kept in the back of tmind that raw through put is good, but access time is also needed for multi track playback. It's always good to have audio on separate tracks, but in todays world our video and audio are many times in the same file. Anyway, back to Vegas. I'm up to my neck in both work and home stuff so not much time for reconfiguring or testing, but will try to get a properly set up system as I'm going to have to start doing lots of editing soon on some projects. Would like to upgrade to a new i7 processor and maybe Vegas V9, but am too swamped to take chances and make changes right now.

I have set up and used about 8 - 3ware and Areca 8 port pci-x and pci-e raid 5 systems and 1 -16 port system. Some for me, some for others. My base assessment is: 3 Ware better tech support and can reach someone to talk with immediately. I learned raid 5 on the 3Ware systems, so more need to call and learn. Areca, pretty much email only. I haven't used there tech support much, so can't really say, but the one time it took a while to hear back. Like in days not hours. Speed. I find the Areca to be faster on the reads and writes. I'd pick the Areca for video editing over the 3 Ware. I'd pick the 3Ware for support for a server app. Reliability. Both A + with modern versions of their cards. Had some issues with faulty drive signals when the drives were OK on some 3Ware cards years ago with IDE drives. Doesn't seem to be an issue with SATA drives. I generally use 500GB SATA drives with 5-8 in raid 5 configs. Have a couple set up with 5 - 1TB drives, but haven't done any video editing on those. One of my areca setups, runs 7 days a week and serves as a server but also with occasional vegas editing 8.1c. Have always used 10k drives on SCSI and 7200RPM on SATA and IDE. I'm going to be doing some editing, similar to what Lars is using his 10k drives for. When I get some experience with the Cineform files and uncompressed, I'll let you know. I currently have a 6 drive setup in one of my machines on a Areca 8 port pci-3 card running on an Intel q6600. I'll probably try both 1080p as well as 720p I'm finding my 5D files render out way faster in 720p and most people don't appreciate or see the difference on their sets. Whole other conversation there. Long processing and rendering times are getting to me. Another thing, when you back up from these raid systems to another raid, it's very fast. I have tried inexpensive raid cards with port mulitpliers and the back up is fast. Now, I just use external e-sata drives off the motherboard and stripe two 1tb drives in raid 0. Figure between raid 5 and raid 0, I'm semi safe with two copies. In about 5 years of doing this, I've had some raid drives fail, but never lost any data. It's always nerve racking while you rebuild a raid 5, but with a backup, not so nerve racking. For DYI's, if you pay attention, 2x1TB 7200rpm drives on sale around 175-190 with $60 bucks for external e-sata case and cables/brackets for 2 drives. About $240 for 2TB's external back up or 2 drive raid 0. Not bad.

I emailed the company and got a reply saying there were hard at work on getting it to work with Vegas. I asked him about maybe making a stand alone version. I currently take 10-20 5D Mark II clips (*.mov) files and have them rewritten into one file with chapter marks. This is a non destructive rewrite and from what I understand they can redo audio without messing with re-encoding the video. Anyway, it's a great way to archive and find stuff in a hurry. I suggested it would be great if we could tag or list a bunch of .mov files and then point to a master audio file and replace the audio with the master audio when it writes on a single file with all the clips. His response was he liked the idea and would look into it. My guessing is can probably accomplish this pretty easily as he already has the code to compare the audio waveforms then sync them up. I watched a demo today with a fellow using 6 cameras. The syncing process was real quick. Keeping my fingers crossed that we will see it in Vegas sooner than later.

Don't Upgrade yet to V9 if using Cineform
Been watching the FCP crowd being able to process the Canon 5D Mark II files a heck of lot more quickly than most PC users. Little jealous. Thought I'd go with Vegas 9 and had high hopes for the 64 bit (still running 32bit here) with Cineform. Now, I'm not so sure. Anybody tried the Canon native .mov files in version 9? Do they play in realtime? Edit any faster? Anyway, this was too long a read, but at least it saves me the upgrade money for a while.
