Nested Timeline BUGS

When a Nested Timeline is created the performance is very slow if the Project Media Window is active.

In the video below there are 4 nested timeline in the Project: (Cam_01, Cam_02, Cam_03 and Cam_04). Using the Open Nested Timeline button and returning to the main project or minimizing the main project and restoring causes performance to be very slow and the project to take a long time to respond.

If the Project Media Window is disabled, performance returns to normal.

Anyone else confirm this problem?

When switching to the Nested TL and back, all media files are closed and must be reopened. Therefore, it is important that only the media files used in the TL are in the project and unused ones are removed from the project. Tools -> Clean Project Media

I just tested it again and I also see this difference. It seems like the media files in the parent project are not unloading. This would explain the fast build of the TL. This needs to be looked at again in more detail.

Edit:

It is not the media files.

When the project window is closed, no undo and redo buffer is created. This is probably the crucial difference.

@matthias-krutz

I agree with you. Apparently the delay occurs because when the Project Media window is active and has nested projects, Vegas always reparses all files in the project. I find this unnecessary, except when changes are made to the audio file where it is necessary to create the audio proxy and the new waveform view.

Another VEGAS bug with nested timeline: Sometimes the Create Nested Timeline option does not keep the correct project settings when creating the nest. When this occurs, is necessary correct manually the properties in the nest and in the main project. See my screen record bellow showing this bug.

There are still more problems:
1.It is not possible to create a nested timeline in the events of a nested timeline.

2.It is not possible to create a nested timeline when a nested timeline is selected along with events in a project.

At the risk of sounding like Debbie Downer, I never thought nesting needed fixin'.

Perhaps, it needs un-fixin'.

@john_dennis Yes, there are several ways to reach the goal. I personally find the current approach of handling them all in one VEGAS process more elegant. However, it still has a lot of room for improvement.

Here are a few more points:

For comfortable switching between Parent and Nest, it is important that the current cursor position is adopted.

In the Project Media window the Use Count increases with every Nest call. It is a small bug that is mainly noticeable when cleaning up the parent project, when files cannot be removed that are obviously not used.

Markers are not transferred to subprojects.
