new resolve 14...

ushere schrieb am 25.04.2017 um 08:43 Uhr

looks like i'll be leaving vegas completely once 14 is past beta release. now has a fairlight audio page - probably the last strength vegas had. AND, at $299 for the studio version it's a no brainer....

i shall miss a great many people who inhabit this forum, especially for their help and advice over the years, but my loyalty for vegas has been so severely tested over the last couple of years that it's time to take a new road.

I haven't used Resolve yet. So here's a question: What does Vegas still do better? Phrased differently: What would you miss? (e.g. Intuitive ease of use? Wider format support? More customization through the scripting API?)

ushere schrieb am 26.04.2017 um 01:06 Uhr

well, of course, there's scripting - whether one's own, or such as ed's wonderful excaliber, etc., this is something unique to vegas and the jewel in the crown if you like.

ease of use is another advantage, i can rough cut and trim faster and more accurately in vegas than any other nle i've ever used, but there after they're all pretty much the same, eg, fx, etc.

audio was a very strong point earlier on, but what with plugins and vst's and such it's advantages are beginning to fade.

finally, vegas has rather lost direction - there have been no real innovations (other than gimmicks) for many years, and every release seems to have ignored some existing bugs. and as for gpu implementation, it is well beyond a joke by now.

that said, 14 is a VERY rough beta at present, but what it does show is great innovation and a team both responsive and dedicated to its future - which unfortunately is more that i get from magix.

Ok, according to your point of view, what path should Vegas takes on and what feature should be added?

my pov is very simple - stop with bells and whistles, gimmicks, and tinkering around the edges. fix the known problems once and for all, and for goodness sake, after 3 to 4 years of endless problems with gpu GET IT FIXED and working with modern cards.

i've been using vegas commercially since ver 4, and during the yeas have toyed with nearly every other nle, but always came back to vegas. but as i wrote, the last few years have been a great disappointment - sony obviously wanted their catalyst suite to take off (it's apparently belly-flopped) and let vegas go to magix, who seem to have done nothing substatial (as yet), other than buggering up the icons to a point where i simply gave up and went back to 13.

if vegas is to stay in the game they need to take a long hard look at who their intended market is, and work hard at satisfying it. it certainly isn't 'pros' in as much as there's absolutely no collaborative tools at all, and the loss of media manager means many indies (such as myself) are now left without any transferable media management between projects. if they're after event pros then they need to look at stability with large / long / mixed format timelines, and the ability to render such tl's reliably.

i think that magix no show at nab speaks volumes regarding their perceived market (even if they are a europian based company, the us market dwarfs all else), and mainstream pros are not it.

anyway, what do i know, i'm just an old fart who's made a living from video production for almost 50 years and still misses the clunk of vtrs lining up for an A/B roll edit ;-)

I fear that Magix knows what their market is and it doesn't involve people who use cameras.

I haven't gotten very far with the Resolve beta in 15 minutes. I keep hitting Control-Home and the cursor doesn't move.

NickHope schrieb am 26.04.2017 um 09:59 Uhr

Plenty of bugs in the Beta. Probably not a bad idea to watch from afar for a while.

Anyway downloaded the beta also, wish you al the best, still on VP13 off course as i mostly only read new bugs, then this then that on VP14, i try to follow this forum and see/read what the updates are, i am glad VP is alive thanks to MAGIX but its also dead at the same time.

thank you richard. appreciated. i will however await 15 to see if anything does develope, since, as i wrote, res 14 is really in no way release ready, even for a beta it's still way too buggy to consider using seriously.

Get rid of the cheesy transitions, enable legacy GPU support for those like me editing on Laptops, fix the gamma shift issue from the go get, a dark interface to ease eye strain for long editing sessions and Magix would have my money for the upgrade. Resolve is nice, but let's face it, the cutting and now audio features are bolted on to what was essentially a grading application. Since I can't even get Resolve 14 Public Beta to work other than opening, there's no real test I can do to say one way or the other.

Barton-Santello schrieb am 27.04.2017 um 08:12 Uhr

I've been testing DaVinci Resolve 14 (Beta) and finding this Beta crashing like crazy. Aside from the crashes, I realized that besides the software's sleek interface - being the new shiny thing, it's just ANOTHER approach to an editor. Whether it's Vegas, Premiere Pro, Final Cut, Video ProX, etc, they all have their strengths, their weaknesses, their bugs. Vegas is holding its own and Magix has had it less than a year. Magix is strong on audio and I'm sure over time, the Magix and Vegas teams will be share their technological expertise and Vegas will continue to improve.

Leslie has got what he wants. A minimalist cutting floor machine. I get it. I got from the Leslie's get-go.

However, I haven't had the decades of experience Leslie has had with real film splicing and cutting. What I have with Vegas is the ease with which I can jump about with different ideas and generate new and different ways to get a story across. Again, I haven't had the decades of cutting that Leslie has had, I'm open and have been to the edit style that Vegas has and will continue to spread before me. I can liberate my ideas from arrangement to CC to Colour Grading to Audio SFX to Titling to Scripting from any ANY point in the process of VP NLE activity. Now, to some, this maybe daunting, and not what's been used to, to me VP continues to be a breath of fresh air and a daily excitement: "Now, VP, where are we going today?". To others it's tantamount to being a distraction and an anathema.

As I said, people who use DR, I get it. And again, again, I get and continue to get why I use Vegas. And guess what, Leslie, my bells and whistles ain't yours, I get that too. Used DR and find it restrictive and contrary to my way of how I discover my narrative.

ushere schrieb am 27.04.2017 um 12:26 Uhr

grazie, as ever you're spot on. my work generally revolves around talking heads and whatever footage i, or they have to add, along with stills, graphics, etc.,. it's old school doco style, depending more on basic visuals than fx. (i do, or rather did, corporate stuff, but am turning most of it away since i really don't need the income or headaches it brings;-)).

i still maintain that nothing comes close to vegas for my rough cutting purposes - it's a sheer pleasure chopping down a 2 hour interview into 8 or so minutes, i'm totally oblivious to the process and can concentrate completely on what's being said, etc., but for c'key and cc i much prefer resolve, but that's a purely personal workflow choice - i've pulled good keys in vegas, just as i've cc'ed in it.

my ongoing gripe with vegas has been its dependency on vfw, lousy gpu, and lack of vision (the icons in 14 made sure of that;-)). i've made a great living from working with vegas and would have happily continued but, once sony washed their hands of it and magix didn't offer much in 14, i felt it time to make a change whilst i still had/have some active brain cells capable of learning new tricks.

that said, i haven't uninstalled vegas 13 and am unlikely to since for run 'n' gun editing it beats resolve hands down.

So, if I'm to distill your original comments, it's your wish for MAGIX to get VP14, latest build, right. Do you think that repeating your wonder and pleasure at DR will activate MAGIX into making VP work? Really? But I could be wrong, as you know this trade very well.

i might know video production reasonably well, but i've no idea about software production ;-)

my hope is that magix might pay some attention to the noises going on hereabouts and make 15 (i've given up on 14) a release that'll capture myself and other long-term users back into the fold.

marc-s schrieb am 27.04.2017 um 20:53 Uhr

I'm seriously looking at Resolve as well. Still on Vegas 13 and will definitely take a look at Vegas 15 but they need to really fix/improve things or I will probably migrate to Resolve. One thing that struck me a few years ago is when I heard somewhere that Resolve had a team of 100 people in Singapore working on it. If that's true it explains why they have made such leaps and bounds ahead with the software. The amount of new features and innovation with each release is mind boggling. If the new version solves the slow playback and is comparable to Premiere I can't see a reason not to switch if they can stabilize it. Vegas on the other hand releases some bug fixes and a few minor features and sends me never ending e-mails to me to upgrade on a special upgrade price that never ends.

Master86 schrieb am 27.04.2017 um 21:40 Uhr

Resolve 14 is more to the height of Vegas Pro 14, really, not to say.
Vegas Pro 14 is an amateur product, not completely finished. Make it to the snatch, a shame to have it out filled with bugs and updates. I hope the Sony alumni will create something new and really stop with Vegas Pro, because there you kill the software with these beats. I said my opinion, if some its not pleasing, I do not care, I at least I say the truth.

Barton-Santello schrieb am 27.04.2017 um 23:46 Uhr

Master86 Not sure what you're you mean by Vegas being an amateur product. The software has been developed and refined for about 15-years now and has been used by media professionals and independent filmmakers over that time. All editing software has bugs and issues as a result of the constant change in video technology, a multitude of computer hardware designs (including memory access, GPU configurations,), third party plug-ins, etc. Also, changes to each computer's operating system version. Yes, bugs are frustrating, but if you think about it, you have to wonder how any video editing software on a computer can remain stable. It's almost a miracle.

Each person has to determine which editing system works best for their needs. Editing software like Edius, DaVinci Resolve and Sony Catalyst all seem geared for TV & Media professionals; whereas Magix Vegas Pro, Video ProX ,Adobe Premiere and Final Cut, I see as software for 'creators' and 'storytellers'. I'm generalizing, but just making a point.

I don't think calling Vegas Pro an Amateur product is technically correct; or, for this forum makes long-time users too happy to hear.

Richard Jones schrieb am 28.04.2017 um 12:26 Uhr

That's one of the most sensibly thought through comments on this subject of "bugs" and the fact that a "bug" will often effect some but not other users highlights the truth of what you are saying.

Richard

ushere schrieb am 29.04.2017 um 01:55 Uhr

completely agree with the two previous posts re bugs. however, if vendors would specify in detail what systems they test/recommend then i'm sure they'd be a lot less noise - look back at avid and their studio systems - they had bugs but were able to keep them in control to some degree.

Serena Steuart schrieb am 30.04.2017 um 10:40 Uhr

In general I agree with Grazie's and Ushere's comments on the ease of using Vegas Pro, although I think it started to go downhill well before version 14. There came a time when the legacy structure needed deep revising to fix various bugs, but instead the developers kept adding little bunches of goodies that, too often, further weighed down the basic structure. I always liked its intuitive methodology, which for me made an easy transition from cutting film to cutting video. Now, Davinci Resolve is a powerful professional colour grading package designed for co-operative post production and Black Magic have a vision that retains all that power and facility whilst developing it into a tool also for the 'lone producer' who does it all in-house. Version 12 provided much better tools for editing and v14 is adding powerful audio tools, all whilst improving that already existing. V14 also has a re-built 'back end' to improve processing speed for more ordinary computing facilities. This will be costing quite a bit and is done within BM's philosophy of solving problems facing video producers. Yes, Resolve has a learning curve and not something you should tackle without instruction. Fortunately there is good instruction available on Moviola and if you want capabilities to explore different timelines then version 14 is designed for that. Indeed the beta version isn't great yet (let's keep Donald out of it) and I've gone back to 12.5.5, but the purpose of the beta is something along the lines of crowd identified bug finding.

aboammar schrieb am 06.05.2017 um 16:30 Uhr

I am running Resolve 14 Beta and it works very smoothly with no crashes what's so ever! It is extremely stable for a Beta version, at least on my system!

I will definitely buy the Studio version of Resolve 14 when it is released, and for only $299, who could ask for anything more?

Sure I will still be using Vegas Pro 13 for a while, at least until I master Resolve. However, I am also keeping my eyes open and waiting for Vegas Pro 15, after that I will decide if I will move completely to Resolve or upgrade to Vegas Pro 15.
