Thank you for the info. The first thing to do in Vegas Pro is to go to Options/Preferences/Deprecated Features (tab) and check the 'Enable the QuickTime plugin' checkbox. This may be needed because the format profile is QuickTime. QT in Vegas Pro is a deprecated feature because Apple some years ago ceased QT support for Windows.

If that doesn't work, it may be that the variable frame rate (VFR) mode of the media (common to most phone video including Android phones) is not always accepted by Vegas Pro. A long history of this on the forum if you search VFR on the forum. The most common advice where VFR has caused a problem is to convert the media to Constant Frame Rate (CFR) via a utility such as the free Handbrake ( https://handbrake.fr/ ).

Ok tried turning off the variable frame rate, video still does not show, also tried handbrake to convert and no luck there either.

What's your file i/o tab say? Is "enable legacy HEVC" checked? If so, uncheck it and restart Vegas. It should play back in Vegas but performance of highly compressed variable frame rate 10-bit HEVC isn't likely going to be good.

(Quicktime does nothing for this type of file.)

Bingo! Video now shows! But very choppy! Is there anything that can be done abou that? The video file shouldn't be variable frame rate, I set it to 60.

RogerS schrieb am 23.11.2021 um 14:24 Uhr

Yep, as expected. It is variable frame rate- look at media info, but it's a phone and that's how they work:

Frame rate mode                          : Variable
Frame rate                               : 59.166 FPS
Minimum frame rate                       : 30.000 FPS
Maximum frame rate                       : 66.667 FPS

Programs like Shutter Encoder or Handbrake can covert to constant frame rate AVC which Vegas likes better and is way easier to process.

Beyond that, right click on media and "create video proxy."

What are you using as GPU decoder? If it is AMD or Nvidia, there is no GPU decode, so can't expect 4k60 HEVC to play smoothly. It is a bug they don't fix. If you have a working Intel IGPU, Vegas should have auto selected it as GPU Decoder. Vegas is not good at playing back 60fps HEVC even if you are using GPU decode but you most likely are not using GPU decode by your 'very choppy' remark

Ehemaliger User schrieb am 24.11.2021 um 08:34 Uhr

@Ehemaliger User Yep agreed, I used to struggle with HEVC (H.265) , i swapped my old phone over to AVC (H.264) which plays a lot better in Vegas, also when rendering out from Vegas use MAGIX AVC/AAC not MAGIX HEVC/AAC to get better playback if later re-importing back into Vegas.

An iPhone website says -
Open Settings > Camera > Formats.
Under Camera Capture, you have two options: High Efficiency, or Most Compatible. Tap on the one you’d like to use.
High Efficiency uses HEIF and HEVC for your photos and videos.
These take up less space but may be incompatible with older devices. Most compatible uses the standard JPEG/H.264 formats. Note: 4K at 60fps and 1080p at 240fps requires High Efficiency to be enabled.'

It can be seen if you right click on the media on the timeline - Properties - General

@Ehemaliger User He's recording in dolbyvision HDR, these are the specifics

  • The Dolby Vision iPhone recording specifications:
  • Codec/Format : HEVC Main10 video in Apple Quicktime container (.mov)
  • HDR format: Dolby Vision with HLG base layer (Profile 8.4)
  • Transfer Characteristic: HLG (ITU-R BT.2100-1)
  • Color primaries: BT.2020
  • Chroma sampling: 4:2:0
  • Bit depth: 10 bit

I don't have an Iphone 12 or 13, but it looks like there is no AVC option, so there is no GPU decode unless you're using an Intel with an IGPU enabled. It's baffling to me that they don't fix this HEVC 10bit problem, Iphones are the majority of phones sold in USA

Ehemaliger User schrieb am 25.11.2021 um 08:46 Uhr

@Ehemaliger User 👍 I don't have an iPhone either, i bought one for someone not long ago & going through the specs i suggested changing that setting if they were going to be editing, don't know what came of that but my old Huawei (most hated, couldn't wait till my contract ended, gonna fix it with a hammer) phone, i turned it off about 4yrs ago & this Samsung S21 Ultra i've not enabled the HEIF, I mainly film 4k 30fps now, don't know if 4K at 60fps needs it on like the iPhone says it does, & It'll film in 8k but i never do, i've nothing that'll play that on my PC 😕 & it was a while ago so might try again but i think Vegas says no when i import 8k 🤣, i don't know if it comes on automatically with that 🤷‍♂️ so yeah they all need to get their act together.

Ehemaliger User schrieb am 25.11.2021 um 12:19 Uhr

I tried the 8K (HEVC 420 8bit) from S21+ , it loads and uses the GPU decoder, it's sort of works at PREVIEW/QUARTER, on the 8K timeline, a better experience on a 4k timeline in PREVIEW/QUARTER

With the Samsungs many people will leave HDR off due to incompatibilities but maybe not so much with Iphone's that have DolbyVIsion HDR due to it's backwards compatibility with HLG HDR and SDR
