Since you’re not going back out to tape you could also use the Canopus ADVC-50 which is a bit cheaper than the ADVC-100. The ADS Pyro A/V Link would work too but it has some problems capturing old tapes which ADS Tech is working on but haven’t fixed

youve confirmed my suspicions that Norton AV is taxing my CPU resources. My ISP offers email Virus scanning for $1 per month, that might be a better way to go. cheers JC

You want to use VBR to get better quality. Try the settings I suggested. This will allow the encoder to use 5000Kbps if it needs it for a scene with a lot of motion and steal from other scenes that don’t need it so the average is 3000Kbps.

I have no personal experience with USB capture devices but I can tell you what I know: You’ll need USB 2.0 support (not USB 1.1) to do full resolution captures. So if your PC only has USB 1.1 forget about USB capture or plan to add a PCI USB 2.0
