strange... I know repeated playback seems to buffer the stuff to memory but it's always increased playback, not decreased it. :?

That sounds reasonable. you're now playing out of your page file. Turn down your RAM preview setting.

I don't know what you've got the preview RAM set to but given your numbers Vegas gets to a point where there's only 400MB left for the OS and everything else. Are you really sure you need the preview RAM setting so high?
