To "DGates":

"So what's the sharpening sweet spot? 250?"

It will likely vary, depending on subject material and how good/bad the results look with different degrees of sharpening when seen on a good TV (and you can get away with levels of sharpening with HDV that would look terrible with Mini-DV). In Vegas, I use a preview window that is 1/2 of 1080x1920 on a sharp LCD monitor, and I generally run the preview at "Best"-"1/2". For checking the center of the image at full resolution in the preview window, I switch to "Best"-"Full". Generally, with no dark image parts against skies or with other important contrasty edges present, sharpening can be greater (in a range roughly between 200 and 350) - but I will know more about this as I work with it more. Best to just experiment for yourself with different values...

More:

I have been using a Vegas Pro sharpening value of 0.250 with Mercalli in my current project (shot with a hand held HV20 at the "Chicago Bean", without my usual camera brace), and I have been placing FX in the order of Brightness & Contrast, Color Balance, Saturation, Sharpening, and finally Mercalli to output a final version of each clip with a single compression pass (not all of those filters were used on all the clips in the project, and any additional ones needed could have been added in the string before processing). I will then assemble the final versions of the clips (which had their audio tracks also worked on before export/import from/to the timeline using "Ctrl M"). I did notice that several of the eight final clips I had made to date had bad frames introduced during the processing that were about three frames from the clip tail ends, requiring the cutting off of the ends of those clips. I ran all of the modified clips through "Mpeg2repair" for checking, but none showed any errors even though a single frame in each of several was mostly covered with green blocks. Further mysteries - but this is not very bad compared with earlier problems with red-black frames when using the old .dll file...

Quick question: You don't need the actual computer you are running it on connected to the net, right? You can just register on another PC that is connected and get the numbers required and such?

I keep my edit system off the net.

Thanks.

I am having toruble using it with HDV footage (HV20). It doesnt seem to recognise it as 1440x1080 and says it has to render at 720-25p?

does anyone have any ideas?

Cheers
