Thanks! Btw you didn't mention Bit Defender... a nice 64 bit Firewall / Virus scanner.

Anyway for those interested in 64 bit progress - the PlanetAMD64 forums are the place to go - http://www.planetamd64.com/index.php?act=idx

I for sure don't believe everything read on the web or this forum, especially when coming from certain posters. <wink>

That's three times you claimed something I don't know about. Here's something I do know. Microsoft ALWAYS makes a public announcement whenever a new version of its OS is released for public consumption and such announcement is carried on major TV networks, etc..

I've nether seen or head any such announcement and you keep moving the goal posts. The FACTS are the page you linked to offers only a trial. The so-called upgrade, technically an EXCHANGE ($12) Microsoft itself warns may void the warranty of your hardware and said "exchange" only applies to preinstalled systems.

Another official Microsoft page tells the WHOLE story.

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/64bit/upgrade/default.mspx

You can EXCHANGE a 32 bit version of Windows XP for a 64 bit version. Such exchange depends on if or not Microsoft's parnters are part of the deal.

However IF you build your own system (many in the forum do) then this "deal" may or may not apply depending on what you bought hardware wise, from whom and when.

https://microsoft.productorder.com/clientx64/default.aspx

Silly threads like these turn sour because people talk at each other instead of to each other. Since you obviously need to have the last word, take it. The facts speak for themselves.

this is NOT a trial version http://tinyurl.com/9oymx

can't you understand ? Why do you deny the obvious ? How do you explain that people already purchased it and that it is shipping and also comes on several pre-built systems that I already mentioned?

If Microsoft did not release it , is tigerdirect, bestbuy and amazon all selling fake copies?

Get out and go to a good software store, you can buy it right off the shelf ... How many more examples do you need?

Just admit when you are wrong please ...

Not to mention you can also buy Server 2003 64bit edition, which has been out some time. The first update for XP64 was just released this week in fact (minor)

other places that currently sell it

The "obvious" from one of the sites you yourself reference:

From Microsoft's license agreement for XP 64

By purchasing this product, you agree to adhere to the System Builder license from Microsoft.

Get it yet? You're talking apples and oranges. The version you're talking about is sold as OEM, meant for system builders. That's why only a T R I A L version is available off Microsoft's own site or they give you a option to "exchange" from a earlier 32 bit version, but with strings attached. Unless you think Microsoft has a new sales policy where it refuses to sell its own products how else will you try to explain why Microsoft isn't selling its newest OS itself off one of the world most visited web sites?

Answer: Its only released back channel. If or not you find it on a few web sites or even if you see it retail, Read the full license agreement.

Hint: This isn't meant to be a CONSUMER version of Windows yet, isn't sold as such, and has restristions in the license. That's why Microsoft hasn't done the usual press releases, announcements, advertising, yet.. The main reason is it would be stupid to market a product they've had tons of problems develping, little driver support yet, and admit itsn't ready for general release and even say on their own web site isn't a good choice and that most people should still stick with the 32 bit version of Windows. Interesting, you ignore all that and then claim I don't know what's going on.

You're already 1,000 yards down field from where the original goal posts were. How much further will you try to move them?

I keep quoting MICROSOFT, who I'll assume most people will agree is the authority on their software, not you.

More things MICROSOFT SAYS a click off their main page:

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/64bit/upgrade/default.mspx

"Before you make the decision to move to 64-bit, we recommend taking the following steps:

• Read the information on this Web site about Windows XP Professional x64 Edition. Unless you are pushing the boundaries of the 32-bit architecture, you will probably find that a 32-bit operating system is still the best option.

• Investigate whether or not 64-bit device drivers are available for the components in your PC and the peripherals that you use (scanners, cameras, and so on). Since your 32-bit drivers will not work on this version of Windows, it is important that you make sure your devices are supported."

Even Microsoft, the developer of Windows XP 64, suggests don't get it. LOL!

Also remember this forum is suppose to be about Vegas. There is no 64 bit version of Vegas. So regardless even if anyone has a 64 bit computer and gets their hands on some 64 bit version of Windows it doesn't mean a thing. No 64 bit version of Vegas to run on it, so its all mute.

Cheesehole wrote on 6/1/2005, 3:51 PM
The point you keep ignoring is right now there is no 64 bit version of Vegas and there is no RELEASED version of 64 bit Windows either.

BB, it's definitely released. I realize I'm repeating what's already been said but Windows 2003 64 bit has been out for a while, and XP 64 has been out for like a month now.

However IF you build your own system (many in the forum do) then this "deal" may or may not apply depending on what you bought hardware wise, from whom and when.

You can buy the OEM version right here if you are building your own system.

I shop at Zip Zoom Fly all the time - I'm sure it's completely legit.

It's not that Windows 64 isn't ready, it's just that there are so many gaping holes in hardware support because of lack of drivers for common items like scanners and printers. AFAIK there is nothing from Canon and very little from HP and Epson.

We went through the same thing when NT4 came out. The OS was solid and a so much nicer to work with than Win95, but we had to suffer until the hardware manuf. caught up on the driver front.

Now that Windows XP 64 is officially released I'm sure drivers will start coming out faster.

Hey BJM, thanks for the link. I'm thinking of experimenting with xp64 pretty soon. Do you know if you can do a dual boot with xp 32 on one partition and xp 64 on the other but having the single serial number to run both os's?
B_JM wrote on 6/1/2005, 5:20 PM
yes - you can dual boot .. i run them in the same partition myself as they dont use the same directory names for anything .. (dual partitions are a better idea)

Since it is sold all over the place (bundled with a cable usually to meet the OEM restrictions (sometimes not even)), and the same price as Xp32 , and that is it exactly the same version as any retail version in EVERY respect .... it is worth it to at least try it out .. Tigerdirect says they have been selling copies like hotcakes .. they are certainly not some minor dealer ..

drivers have been less an issue (now) - I have no problems now with the hardware I am using...

Aren't those boards ready for the AMD dual cores?
B_JM wrote on 6/1/2005, 7:08 PM
amd dual cores --

you know, I don't even know ...

I highly don't think the K8N board is - as it is the older pin out.
