1080 50p to 1080 30p

I've been reading with interest some posts on converting video to youtube. I don't do a great deal of this and what I have done so far has come out pretty well (IMO!)

I see that youtube prefers 30p. I record in 50p. I always select disable resample and know that if I'm converting to 25p it just drops every other frame - easy.

What happens in the rendering process for 30p rendering from my 50p footage? Does it just drop 20 frames per second or does it do something else? Will Vegas fully manage this frame rate reduction or do I need to help it in some way.

Thoughts appreciated.

With resampling disabled, Vegas will drop frames in a 2:3 cadence -- AxCDx, or similar, resulting in slightly choppy playback. For smoothest results, you really need Twixtor for this kind of work.

But 25p is also a preferred Youtube frame rate, so why not use that?

Agreed. 25p should be fine for YouTube. You will gain nothing in the conversion to 30p.

Well, to be pedantic, 30p would give smoother motion than 25p. It depends on how well you convert the 50p to 30p as to which would be better in practice.

Native or Twixtor 30p would be smoother.
50p->30p without resampling would be worse than 25p imo, due to the uneven cadence.

Agree.
Not only would the cadence be problematic, the effective shutter angle is going to be around 100deg, combine that with he 25fps and it could look juddery, add in the dropped frames and you could add "jerky" as well.

Of course all that depends on the content but without motion estimation resampling I see nothing to gain from 30p over 25p. Even if I had Twixtor or whatever I'd still do a small test first because those kinds of plugins are a Class 1 render hogs.

Thanks for the replies. 25p seems the logical way forward

Agree.
For best results, turn resampling off.
