A camera that shoots 1080i may also shoot in standard definition, but it is wrong to say 1080i is shot in standard definition.

You can also shoot 1080i and DELIVER in standard definition.

1080i means a widescreen ratio of 1920 x 1080 with an interlaced image.

not to mention 1440x1080i FILLS a 1920x1080 frame with a 1.33 aspect ratio.. in turn a HD panel (1920x1080) shouldnt need to scale your image

Yes, 1080i is always widescreen.

To add to that, HD is always widescreen, whether 1280 x 720p, 1920 x 1080i, or 1920 x 1080p.
