1080i wide screen?

Daveco2 wrote on 12/9/2007, 5:35 AM
My HDV camera shoots in 1080i and when I capture via VMS it comes in as an m2t file in 1440x1080 format which is 4:3. This looks like widescreen video in the VMS viewer and the DVDs I make also come out as widescreen with no problem. But I thought to be widescreen, it had to be 16:9. How does this work?

For editing, I use the VMS template: HDV 1080-60i (1440x1080,29.97fps), the same as the m2t file type. Is this right?

In the DVDA , I use the Property NTSC 720:480. Is this right?

Thanks,

Dave

What's happening is that the pixels aren't square. they're actually 1/3 wider than they are tall, so each pixel is 4:3 as well. Multiply the 4:3 image format by the 4:3 pixel size and then you get 16:9.

You should be choosing the NTSC widescreen template.

Ok, Chienworks, very good. Thanks.

But the templates in VMS are:
(1) NTSC DV (720x480=1.5)
(2) NTSC DV Widescreen (720x480=1.5)
(3) HDV 720-30p (1280x720=1.78)
(4) HDV 1080-60i (1440x1080=1.33=4:3)
Number (4) seems the closest match to the format of the m2t file and it says HDV. Is this not the right template?

And for DVDA, the templates are:
(1) NTSC Widescreen (720x480=1.5)
(2) NTSC Widescreen (704x480=1.47)
Is (1) template correct?

Yes, it is. Remember that 1440*1.3333=1920.

Eugenia,

Thanks. Making a lot more sense now.
