Well it's no longer 16:9 but I guess you mean is the resultant 4:3 of lower visual quality than the original 16:9 and the answer is yes, assuming the source and output are of the same resolution i.e. SD.

However you're only loosing horizontal resolution which seems to be considered not as bad as loosing vertical resolution.

However if your source is HDV and your output is SD then cropping to 4:3 will leave you with enough resolution to be doing no harm.

Still why not leave your material as 16:9, 16:9 is the norm down here and is in most parts of the world or soon will be. Why cripple your footage for the future.

this would be going into a revision of a 4:3 project as supplement material. just trying to figure if I should just shoot at 4:3 for this or not
