16 bit audio on 12 bit camcorder...

This is not 100% on topic, but I am capturing into Vegas so that's something :) anyway, my src tapes were recorded on a Sony VX-2000 with audio at 16 bit. I am capturing them into Vegas from a Canon ZR-70MC, and the display on that says the audio is at 12 bit. I searched the forums for something on this, and the closest I got was that the data that is on the tape will be transferred as is via firewire into the PC under the guise of an avi wrapper - is that all I need to know? If so, then the audio retains 16-bit status regardless of what the canon display says, correct? Or do I need to worry that it is being converted from 16 bit to 12 bit?

thank you, Gurus -

David

It will not be converted as far as I know. I'd say that is the record setting on the camera, you should be able to change it to 16 bit on the camera unless Canon have done something weird. Even if you cannot I don't see how the camera could change it.

If it was recorded in 12 bit that is what it will stay at. Most DV cameras have a 12 bit and a 16 bit setting, if you use the 12 bit you can go back later and insert another audio track on the tape like a voiceover or music or something like that. If it is recorded in 16 bit you can't insert audio (unless you bring it into an editing program.)
