AFAIK, there's only two ways to get things in/out of a HDCAM tape:
A- Use Sony Xpri's native transfer. This is like firewire/DV, except for HDCAM. Xpri (with the hardware) is no longer sold, so this is not really an option.
B- Go in via SDI, 1920X1080. In the deck, it will filter the signal and lower the resolution to 1440x1080. It will lower the resolution on the chroma too.
2- HDCAM *SR* is a different story. Broadcasters usually don't ask for it.
And why does the "1440" version look vertically excessive?
What do you mean?
Does your preview have Simulate Device Aspect Ratio Turned ON?
Without that the 1440 version will look kind of 'tall' whereas the 1920 version having a 1.00 PAR will look correct.
I think 1440 will be fine. However the people you need to be asking is the post house.
As far as I know you can print to HDCAM from Vegas, just need a fast enough PC and a Decklink card with HD SDI.
HDCAM SR though is another matter entirely however I think given enough grunt and a suitable card Vegas can do it. Need dual HD SDI and very fast disk arrays.
Please, please be careful. I had an issue with the BMD codec renderered out of Vegas and loaded into FCP, the client reported the entire clip was just black. Someone else from memory seemed to think this was a known bug, it might have been fixed. Clip opened OK in Vegas and the client lost interest in the whole process so I have no further info.
