That's just something we have to deal with. You lose it in the safe zone, so the only time it really becomes annoying is when you use teracking or screen shots. I'd like to see it go away, too.
I think VV3 had it only on the left, if memory serves. The problem is, there is no "safe zone" with screen shots & WMV renders, so you DO see it...
there are a number of things that can cause this. In fact, many DV cameras generate a black line on either edge.
Another thing that might cause this is a mismatch between project size and render size. Is your project also set to 720x480? Or is it 720x486? The later would create edges on the sides as the whole frame would be scaled down to 480 tall.
First, safe zone is the outside of the picture which won't generally be seen on regular TV.
This doesn't help when the frame is downsized or in some transitions, where the edges are visible. Also, when converting to formats for PC viewing, such as wmv, MPEG etc, everything is seen.
I too get this problem with reguklar PAL DV, 720 x 576. It can be removed by cropping, but this takes lots of rendering time for long projects and softens the final pic a little owing to the resizing.
I thought I remembered reading a suggested fix way back, relating to matching output settings or somesuch, but I've spent ages searching on 3 different forums without luck.
It's normally a camera issue. Some cameras put I think 20 pixels on the borders. If you use the full screen on TV the black lines never appear, but if you make PIP they appears, in this case , crop the picture on the PIP.
I think, as everyone is saying, the solution lies in how the product will be viewed. If it's for dvd then you just have to leave it. You could put a black matte around it if you need to clean the edges. You might want to do that anyway if you plan to project it.
If it is just for computer playback then you might do a few tests. If the final will be 640x480 progressive then you could set your project template to 704x480 and then use track motion to make sure the vertical dimension fits. This will crop the horizontals. You may as well do this with a rendered avi- especially if you are using that render to also make other files.
Anyway, do a few tests of samples to see what you get.
Your project is set to 720x480. Right?
In the preview window the image goes to the right and left edges?
But in the render the image doesn't go to the right and left edges?
Why would the Sony support people need to chime in? It's a CAMERA issue. My XL-1 has a black vertical line, about 4 pixels wide, on BOTH sides of the video. It's the way the camera records - nothing to do with Vegas. Other cameras behave differently giving differing amount of black in different areas. I don't see what the issue is about.
In my case (PAL DV) the black sides show in preview, so they are there from the camera as has been said. They are not huge, but they are there. My camera is a 3CCD Panasonic EZ1.
It is an issue when it comes to either showing on PC - CDRom etc, or applying an effect or transition which brings the frame edge into the main part of the screen.
I realise that cropping is the sure way of dealing, but I'll also try fiddling with project settings as Rob suggests.
The DSR500 does this too. Its a fairly high end camera.
If your target is the PC then cropping surely works. The project settings thing I was describing was just another way of cropping. I think it should be faster than stretching to fill frame.
Remember-640x480 square pixels = 704x480 non square (ntsc) . If this (or a multiple of it) is the target size then you've got room to crop by changing your project settings.
