Rather than activating the External Monitor option, why not just drag the Preview monitor to the second screen and size it large? Wouldn't this save resources by not having to make two separate viewers active? -Spoken by someone with a wimpy video card

Because the Secondary Monitor function applies deinterlacing, and color profiles, and other tweaks to try and mimic a studio monitor. The small preview window is inaccurate and just a "preview" of what the video might look like once you render it. Two different views of the same video, one more accurate for color correcting, and one less accurate for fast editing.
