2 simple video questions

skanji wrote on 10/25/2007, 10:37 AM
1) how do I 'break-up' a single video on a timeline? what i have been doing is let's say the video is 1 minute long and i want to have 2 parts of it (:10-30) and (:40-55), I make 2 instances of the same video and edit them accordingly. Is there a way to do this with only one source of the video?

2) how do I input text into a video? I always find the video takes over ownership compared to text boxes that i insert.

Here's hoping you can help!

p.s. I believe I am using Vegas 6?

'Break up'
1. Drag your video clip from the explorer to the timeline.
2. Position your cursor on the clip in the timeline at the point where you want it to split into 2 clips.
3. Press the letter 's' for split.

You should now have 2 clips; one to the left of your cursor and one to the right.

'Text'
1. Insert a new video track above your clips.
2. In the media generators tab (bottom of screen), click text.
3. Drag the default text to the new video track and edit as desired.

Thanks for the 'break up' suggestion - is there a list of 'hotkeys' like the letter 's' and the 'control' button (while clicking and dragging for time elapsed) that is online somewhere?

As far as the test suggestion - does it appear within the video media itself? ie. will it appear on the video at the same time as the video?

Thanks for the prompt response!

Help - Contents and Index - click on "Keyboard Shortcuts"

All events on the timeline are in sync vertically. In other words, any events that are directly above or below each other happen simultaneously. So this means that not only if you have the text above the video on the timeline that they will appear at the same time, but this is how you make them appear at the same time.

yep - understood. The problem I always seem to have is the text never shows up.

I create a text event immidiately under the video event. The video event show, but unless I reduce the transparncey of the video (ie. make it 'lighter') the text won't show up....

Any further thoughts on this?

You're doing it BACKWARDS. Put the title ABOVE the video event

Track 1: Title generated media
Track 2: Video

wow - i had no idea that the order of the tracks makes a difference!!!

The tracks are layers, viewed from the top down. Anything on any particular track hides what's underneath it. Since the video fills the whole frame, it covers up everything underneath it unless you make it somewhat transparent.
