2nd XL2 question - 16:9 mode

jredman wrote on 3/22/2006, 10:13 PM
This is my second question:

I am using a Canon XL2. I shoot in native 16:9 mode 24p.

Whenever I capture video from my XL2 the captured video has an "artifact" on the left side of each frame. The left most column of pixels is darker than it should be the next column is lighter than it should be and the next 3 columns are darker than they should be.

This makes for a faint dark line on the left most part of each frame.

This is in the "raw" video, the captured AVI file before I start editing it. And it doesn't matter if I use the Vegas capture software or the Microsoft capture software.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

How about posting a frame capture on your web site so we can take a look.

Here are the urls:
http://192.35.232.110/blowup.jpg - a blowup of the artifact.
http://192.35.232.110/lineonimage.jpg - capture frame.
http://192.35.232.110/lineonimageE.jpg - captured frame with arrows.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Wow, I'm surprised you caught that. Don't think I would have.

I'm not sure what it is or what's causing it. I've never seen it before in the footage I've shot and/or captured. However, I will look again.

Jay -

Thanks for taking a look at this in your footage.

I've tried everything I can think of to stop the artifacts. I am using Windows XP (home and professional) and I've tried capturing video on three different systems, An IBM, a Sony and an HP.

If you are using an XL2 and Vegas, do you usually shoot in 16:9 or 4:3 and if 16:9, how do you set up Vegas (and the camera) to get the best output? (see link below)

What little I've shot in 16:9 has been in 60i (based on client's need). I can't see in my footage that line artifact that's showing up in your footage. Sorry!

If it were my camera, I would send it in to Canon and have them take a look. You're a member of the XL Owners' Club, right?
